How You Can Have a Bunch of Great Ideas but Still Fuck Up Real Bad: A Korra Essay

Hahahaha ever since Saturday the Korra finale seems to make me angrier and angrier. As a storyteller and as a fan of solid storytelling, it is an atrocious mess! I stand by the creators are amazing directors, amazing concept artists, amazing producers, but wow are they terrible writers. They have absolutely no understanding of dramatic convention, and so the first season of The Legend of Korra suffered greatly from terrible execution, and the core ideas were so good it should’ve been a gamechanger. It should’ve been the most brilliant thing on television and instead we were given a 12-week narrative case of blue balls. Disclaimer: if you enjoyed/love/fanatic about Korra, by all means continue to do so! I enjoyed a lot about Korra. In fact that is why I am so frustrated. But that aside, this is meant as a critique and a dissection and as such you can take it or you can leave it. Nothing I have to say will change the show, nor will anything I have to say will have any effect on what season 2 will bring. Mostly I have been ranting about it to everyone on a daily basis since Saturday and this is my way to finally just. get. it. all. out. So this is me shouting into the ether for my own cathartic glee. Cool? Cool.

When Lafayette stole away to America in 1777, his wife, Adrienne, was pregnant with their daughter Anastasie. The baby was born while he was fighting in the American Revolutionary War (July 1, 1777), and he did not get to meet her until his return to France in February 1779.

So here, he meets his daughter for the first time. ^___^

Kid: O hey! I see that you're wearing masculine clothing!

Me: O? I suppose. *keeps walking by*

Kid: Are you Trans?

Me: I beg your pardon?

Kid: Transsexual.

Me: I don't know. Does it matter?

Kid: It's ok if you are! You're not alone!

Me: Look, gender is biological. It has a role in reproduction, and due to certain hormone levels, it has some affect on an individual's personality. But the way I see it, my gender is just my body's gender. My body is a container, and whether or not people believe in this stuff, "I" am a soul. Souls have no gender since they're immortal and thus have no need to reproduce. I don't see myself as male or female unless biology is a concern. Otherwise, I just dress the way I want. I'm not being a hipster, I'm not experimenting; I don't think I was born in the wrong body or any of that, because I don't think that gender is a huge issue. I'm me. I like pants, ties, and having short hair. I dislike skirts and dresses unless it's too hot for pants. And you should really mind your manners and give people some personal space.

A letter penned by George Washington that’s been locked away for a decade will be the centerpiece of an exhibit dedicated to America’s early roots in religious freedom.

The 337-word document sent to the Hebrew Congregation in Newport, R.I., in August 1790 was addressed to “the children of the stock of Abraham” and poetically quoted the Old Testament, vowing that the new government “gives to bigotry no sanction, to persecution no assistance.”

The National Museum of American Jewish History in Philadelphia, where the letter will be displayed, calls the text a defining statement of religious liberty in the new United States.
