Ophelia Santana is known to her friends as Lia.  She is a witch who is indifferent about what she is and what she can do. At the age of one, she became the sole survivor of a plane crash and an orphan. After some brief shuffling around in Astoria’s foster care system, she was adopted into the Baksh family. Though for her adoptive mothers’ sakes, she legally uses her biological father’s last name.  For tax purposes, she is a self employed, independent contractor who is focused on completing odd jobs. She refers to herself as a legal hitman who is a paid nuisance to society, but really, she’s a content creator on Only Fans with plenty of loyal followers and sponsors. While much of her profits come from explicit content generation, she has posted various types of videos like, but not limited to,  process videos on metal sculptures she creates, prank videos, and videos of her harassing other small business owners because someone paid her enough. She isn’t in the game of limiting herself. Personality wise, she likes being “big,” independent, direct, and finding out what’s the next “big” thing, even if that means she has to be a shit stirrer. Deep down, she doesn’t want to admit that the perfect life she wants might not exist or that she doesn’t even know what that might look like.

they didn’t go out with ophelia a lot, but whenever they did, they wouldn’t complain about it. there was something about their youngest sibling that, although didn’t match kareem’s personality, it also didn’t completely clash against it, which was nice. it was more than they could say about some of their friends sometimes. “please, some of these guys might actually never develop properly and we both know that. might as well put it out there.” because some of them, had been the same loud and obnoxious way even when kareem played for astoria u, in that brief, yet happy chapter of their life. “how about i make you a proper meal, then?” they offered instead, since lia had said she didn’t need any housewarming gifts — and which, of course, kareem was going to ignore, because of course they would bring at least something to her place. with an extra touch of luck. “just buy some decent pans and i’ll make it happen. you still haven’t gotten used to meal prepping, phe? i can’t go around worrying about you not eating because you don’t have time to cook.” their tone got a little more serious than it usually was, but for a good reason. “just make time this weekend and cook for the rest of the week. you’ll thank me later.” leaning in, they pressed a kiss to her cheek, then leaned back to focus on their beer. “do you need anything for the house, by the way?” because they knew that if she did, ophelia wouldn’t tell their mothers in the first place, so kareem was used to asking.

 In Ophelia’s eyes, Kareem was the golden child. And they were not. Given that they were the youngest, they had an ample amount of attention while growing up. However, it wasn’t enough. So of course, in spite of their differences, the attention they received from their siblings was cherished and coveted. “I can’t believe that those chuckleheads have gotten this far only to blow their leads off.” Ophelia spun in their seat. 

“Oh?” The younger witch raised a brow. “I don’t look too skinny, do I?” They chuckled and waved their hand dismissively at the thought. Trivial things like that didn’t bother them all that much. “I’ve got those and you’d have to worry too much, but this weekend is perfect. My dommy mommy is busy so I’ve got the place all to myself.” Ophelia grinned and pulled Kareem close for a side hug. “Oh no, it’s all good and furnished and... the view is to die for. I’m not saying that I’d die for it, but figuratively. I really like the place.”

“It’s a general statement, yet a likelihood.” The amusement in the other’s tone caused the vampire to narrow her gaze suspiciously, “Strange little girl…” she murmured while crossing her arms. “I’ve lived plenty and I don’t need groceries.” 

Leaning against the counter, she watched as the baristas were finishing up their order. Looking back at them, she took their business card and began to thoroughly review it. “I find it situational…” Pausing, she met their gaze and asked, “So you’re a contractor…? What am I supposed to do with THIS?”

Even in a country like this, people had trouble hiding their age. Ophelia wasn’t sure exactly how old this woman was, but from her mannerisms, she must have been at least around her parents’ age range. “If you have no clue then all you’ve been doing is surviving and that doesn’t count as living.”

The witch smirked at Mi-young. “Adapt better, make use of it. Surely, you aren’t just a pretty face, right?” Ophelia took a sip before thanking the barista with a wink. “Dressed so smartly, yet not a thought in her head.”  They muttered, not caring if a word was heard. “If you need anything, including better, discrete mornings, you now have my contact.”

It wasn’t often that Kai got to spend some time away from the casino. Not that he minded, it was one of his favourite places to be. However, it would be foolish to ignore Samhain and the effect that it had on his magic. Nova Pangaea allowed him the luxury of not having to be there to protect his coven during this time, so Kai instead chose to settle himself comfortably on a patch of grass near the beach. He kept his distance from the bonfires, from the crowds of people celebrating, whether it was a celebration of Samhain or of Halloween.

Kai laid back and closed his eyes, allowing the magic to move through him and humming happily to himself when he felt that familiar feeling that came with his creations. Time slowly passed and he felt it over and over and over again until finally, he opened his eyes again to see the swarm of butterflies fluttering around him, watching as they eventually settled themselves on or around him. “Might be a new record this year,” He murmured more to himself than anyone else as he held up a hand for another lone butterfly to settle on. Instead, the butterfly kept moving, along with a few others. Kai frowned, “Where are you going?” He sat up, careful not to crush any of them and watched as they flew towards someone nearby, “You’re going to spook people. Again.”

This time of year was always so busy for Ophelia. When the leaves began to die and before decay left only the skeletons of their former selves, people tended to notice the pulls of their loneliness, or in sweeter words, a need for companionship. Suitors, admirers, and the like flocked to her services, often misconstruing her work for personal connection. Irritatingly, today wasn’t an exception from the emerged pattern born of the salacious few. She had discarded a client behind her and left them to fall to the revelries. They hadn’t paid for anything more. 

Though Ophelia wished they had. She sighed as she leaned back before planting her palms in the sand to support herself. Some days, especially during Samhain, she thought to herself, people aren’t worth the effort. While searching for the energy to leave, here eyes caught the flash and flitter of white. Ophelia instinctively reached out to redirect its path and then raised another hand, poised to set whatever it was down. “Oh shit...” Crush...! “Good thing I came to my senses.” She crossed her legs and gently blew the butterfly away whilst her hands fell to her sides. Butterflies weren’t supposed to be perceived as threats, but anything could be magic during Samhain, and the last thing she needed to do was to mess around. “Definitely startled me... almost hurt it, didn’t though. Honest mistake.”

Mi-young had a smart ass in her midst and it took all her might to not cuss off the younger individual since the last thing she wanted to do was draw attention to themselves. Instead, she paused and mentally gave herself a pep talk to calm the fuck down. She’ll be quenching her thirst any second now and from there, she’ll go on with her life. 

Right? 

“Well my fire would be different from yours and vice versa.” she pointed out at first. “True, but sometimes things don’t go your way and so you have to be quick on your feet and adapt.” Which is why she went ahead and stepped up to combine and pay for their order. Pausing, she held a confused expression and wondered if it was a Western expression. “Rough…and pleasurable?” she repeated. “How is that possible…? Unless…” She scrunched her face slightly and wasn’t sure if the other’s mind was in the gutter. “You know what? Never mind, don’t answer that.”

It sounded like she was being lectured by one of her old college professors. She lightly bit her lip at the thought of them. Office hours were so much more fun after she learned of their search history, and if she could see that side to this woman, she was sure she’d find something hilarious to enjoy. “What makes you so sure...hmm?” Her lips curled into an amused smile. Her coffee sponsor sure looked like she was good at adapting and quick on her feet. 

“What? How is what possible?”  Ophelia knew that she hadn’t stuttered and which words Mi-Young had hooked on. Maybe today wasn’t so bad; she had found someone interesting, even if just for the fleeting moment. “Oh babe, you don’t have to tell the world that you haven’t lived enough.” She turned, placing her attention back to to the pick-up counter. “Maybe instead of coffee that green could have gone in for some groceries.” The witch muttered and flicked her wrist from her coat pocket, revealing a business card. “Adapting doesn’t have to be so hard.”

“Oh, for fuck’s sake. Do you have the key?” Jinyi turned to Ophelia, practically on the verge of tears. “The biometric scanner isn’t working, and I think I left my spare key in my other bag downstairs in the office. Ugh, I just want this night to be over…!” She dramatically slid down the wall as if she were melting, her sequined dress dropping a few beads onto the gold-lined marble floor of the hallway to her penthouse as she did so. Kicking off her heels for good measure, she sat down and hugged her knees. 

Samhain was supposed to be a celebratory time for witches, but all it did was give Jinyi another migraine. As the night drew to a close, all the guests at the gala were eventually just blotches of black ink in her vision. They made a mental note to have a word with the head of R&D about these aura contacts. What was the use of patenting something that didn’t even work? 

“Well? Do I need to call security to let us in?”

Ophelia looked over at Jinyi with a raised brow. Of course, they had a key; they always had a key, but they weren’t going to let their house mate know. Consistent periods of competence often lead to the idea of reliability, and she wasn’t willing to become that type of person. Even if she enjoyed Jinyi’s company, it didn’t mean that she’d let herself become encumbered by the responsibilities of others. 

“Oh, but baby...” A smirk. “Why would I have your key?” She placed a lock pick between her lips as she worked with the rest of the tool set. “You’d think that my sugah momma would be more responsible.” She chortled at the joke, the rumour that she had started and leaned into. No one of consequence was around to witness them, which made the idea of dying with the bit even funnier to Ophelia. 

She popped off the faceplate and hummed a tune to Jinyi’s code. Why use her own if the story she was fabricating was about late-night trysts and scandalous hedonism? “I have another question...” She opened the door and gently pushed the newly forgotten heels inside. “I put in so much work to make you sound cool and you... use all the leeway to be...” Ophelia gestured at the puddle of witch on the floor before dragging them inside. “A gigantic baby. Why waste the good press? Ugh, I ought to spank you.” She rolled her eyes.

kareem felt very nostalgic watching these games. their glory days were way past them, but the witch still loved this game as if they had not been completely traumatized by what happened to them. “good, i wouldn’t want to be blamed for getting my baby sibling drunk.” although phe was far from being a child anymore. those were the days, really. they absolutely loved chasing them around their house back in neo seofonac, and still a little bit after moving back to astoria. “we’re definitely not betting anything on the ravens this year, phe. they’re playing like ass this season.” leaning back against their seat, they ordered another beer for themselves and whatever ophelia wanted. “yeah? when am i going to be invited to your place, then? gotta bring some scented candles or a bottle of wine or something.”

Ophelia rolled her eyes. No child should be allowed in a place like this even if the patrons were as boisterous as children could get. Alcohol wasn’t good for their developing brains and it’d be wrong to affect their lives in that way before they had a chance to really live. “Oh, never. No one’s ever seen me wasted before and I plan on keeping it that way. Way more fun with clarity at my side.” And she just hadn’t found a tasty drink yet. She never bothered being adventurous with alcohol even though she was plenty adventurous in other aspects of her life. “They’re in a developing stage, I guess. The roster’s all wonky.” She tapped her glass again, requesting another water. “You don’t have to bring anything but yourself. I just want to see your pleased face to know that I’m not living in a shitter and that I’ll fatten you up with a proper meal.” Ophelia started to laugh. “Just kidding. I’ll just buy something nice. I still don’t have time to cook.”

Mi-young was well aware that it was obnoxious of her to even do such an act. However, she was low on her blood in-take and she needed an upper stat. Besides, it’s not like she was dismissing the other customer’s order. They were going to get what they wanted to begin with…just at the same time and on top of that its was FREE. As such, she found it inevitable to judge them if they took it the wrong way. 

Taking her card from the cashier, she moved off to the side where it was the pick up area and waited. Hearing the other’s response, the raven haired vampire turned in their direction and smiled, “It’s an emergency.” An ominous response, but she shook her head to dismiss the assumption, “So no I don’t. If there’s an issue with what I did, then you can pay the difference back then.”

If Mi-Young could face palm herself right now, she would. Clearly her messy morning made her figuratively brain dead as this option clearly flew past her mind. With a sigh, she shook her head once more to decline the offer. “I know how to order on the app. I just had a….rough start to my day.”

 Today, the whole point of getting coffee wasn’t to get coffee; it was to test how tightly she had the barista wrapped around her finger. To give off the air of inflexible importance, she acted with urgency and a need to get out of there fast. If it wasn’t for the woman of middling beauty so rudely interrupting, Ophelia would have collected an ample amount of information and she’d have yet another request expediently completed. 

Things were supposed to be simple for this job. 

“Yea...” The witch raised a brow whilst glancing over. She smiled cheekily. “I don’t see a fire.” In times like this, it was best to make something out of the moment.  “You’d have less emergencies if you had a source at the ready, you know.” The other woman felt like a vampire or maybe the type of something that ate other things. Or a really thirsty human. Ophelia was guessing and even if she was wrong, she knew what to say if she had to course correct. “The only acceptable rough start is a pleasurable one.”

Contrary to popular belief, vampires do go through the whole ‘waking up on the wrong side of the bed’ type of day. Although they didn’t need sleep, they had other ways in which the start of their day could go south. For instance, Mi-young’s anklet was misplaced and she spent all morning searching for it which left her hangry and in a bad mood when she finally left her loft. Sure it was her mistake for carelessly placing it on her bar rack, but she wanted to unwind during that time in the comfort of her own home. 

Regardless of what took place, she has now moved on from that mishap and was in need of a caffeine fix which she was ready to spike with the blood bag in her designer purse. Driving over to Java Cafe, she headed towards the queue and decided to take some time to catch up on some emails. In the midst of being in line, she was wondering what the hold up was as the individual in front of her had been with the cashier for quite some time. Stepping up, she gestured a wave to get everyone’s attention and asked, “I unfortunately have to be THAT person and point out that I’m somewhat in a rush. Could you just combine our orders together and I’ll pay the total, thank you.” She then said her order to the barista and handed her card before turning her attention to the brunette next to her, “Don’t worry about owing me…Just pay it forward, mmkays?”

The best way to keep out of the Baksh family shine, (surprisingly or unsurprisingly, depending on the person) was to be like Superman and Clark Kent it up. So before she headed out for her first dose of caffeine, Ophelia, without pausing for a moment of better judgement, put on her best unassumingly middle class outfit for the day. That morning she chose to tuck in an allegedly thrifted AC/DC shirt, bleached by the sun and faded by years of washing. Supposedly it was also once owned by a person two sizes larger than her. If anyone asked (though, she knew no one would), she hadn’t put on custom made, dark grey jeans that were specifically distressed in a way to look destroyed through repeated use. What finished and tied the look together were the scuffed doc martin boots, matte black and hastily tied as if she were too tired to command her hands to work after a late night of hating tomorrow and the idea of working. 

“Six shots in, handsome. Love your handcrafted creations.” Ophelia placed a hand on the counter and leaned forward. Truthfully, she didn’t care who made it, but somewhere along the way, she learned that using the right kind of sweetness meant that they prioritized her drink before others. Like most people in the café, she had places to be, but unfortunately for others, she believed that she deserved to get there at her convenience and not theirs. When she heard the woman’s voice from behind her, Ophelia stood up straight and contained her annoyance to an impatient drum of her nails against the countertop. “Wow... Sounds like you normally pay for strangers’ drinks to get your way.” She chuckled. “Never heard of ordering ahead on the app? I could show you... to... pay it forward.”

that loss made the beer taste a little more bitter in kareem’s tongue. although they didn’t root for the roya seals, this loss meant that astoria ravens would face the oldham gorgons and… well, that never ended well. kareem couldn’t remember the last time their team had won against the gorgons, which meant they were probably going to drink another pint to drown out their sorrows. one groan and they downed the rest of the content of their pint glass, then asked for another. “also, another round of whatever they’re having.” the witch said, motioning towards the person sitting next to them. “please tell me you’re celebrating, or something.” they rubbed their face, tiredly. “i don’t want for tonight to become one of those ‘misery loves company sort of deal…”

"Ooooh... Tsk, tsk, tsk...” Ophelia dragged out the vowels before throwing out the rest of their interest in the game. Football, soccer, or the beautiful game wasn’t nearly as interesting as it was when Kareem used to play. Every other time after that era was just time to kill or time to perform. Fans of the sport loved to be around other plans if you were rooting for the same team, which played to the fantasy of belong. “Water’s a good drink before facing the music.”  Ophelia leaned against the counter and smiled over at Kareem. “Need some clarity if we’re going to bet all odds on one golden boot... But enough of the sad stuff!” Their grin widened. “I finally unpacked everything and my home looks like a home.”

What makes Astoria still appealing to you? Is it related to personal or work relationships?

“Yes, all my relationships keep me here.” They knew that it was best to keep things PG, PC, and family friendly for the government worker. Even though they were born and raised in NP, life was better when the government wasn’t putting them on a watchlist. Last thing anyone needed to be was a flight risk. “It makes life worth living.” Ophelia didn’t do so well when it came to separating her personal and work life from each other. The lack of boundaries allowed her to live in the centre of action with the help of a wealthy sponsor. And being near everyone and anything just made her life feel easier. With so many things around she never had to worry about keeping entertained or running late for the next best thing. “It’s all love and I love Astoria.” They leaned back.

What’s something about your personality that you’re proud of? And what would you like to change?

“I like that my personality is mine and I’m an independent person.” In other words, they were stubborn and at times, inflexible. “Even if someone were to try to force me to do something, it’ll still be me in the end.” Any and all change was going to be on their terms. If asked, they could do whatever they put there mind on, but the catch was that Ophelia had difficultly deciding on where to aim her energies sometimes. “I’d like to become more focused. Simple as that.”

Please elaborate on any violent circumstances you may have been involved with in the past.

“Airplane. Accident.” The answer alone should have been enough but with such an expectant gaze on them, they knew that it wasn’t. She tried not to roll her eyes and instead settled on a steady stare. Even if they were employed to cause a scene from time to time, becoming a perpetrator of violence wasn’t on a list of permitted things on their website. “I don’t remember much of it. I was an infant. The news says that many people died in that crash… ”

Your thoughts about supernatural beings.

“They’re chill.” She spoke as if she wasn’t one herself, but as far as she was concerned, she was a being that existed outside of the natural and supernatural binary. Whatever they were, the others couldn’t even compare. “I don’t have an issue with anyone or anything.” Ophelia folded her hands together. “I hope I answered all your questions.”
