These Final Fantasy XV ads have a swagger to them I haven’t seen in advertising for Final Fantasy since VII and these magazine advertisements:

They’re also similar in that they’re somewhat difficult to understand without context. I remember seeing that “cigarette and a blindfold” ad before I was into Final Fantasy and staring at it for a long time trying to figure out wtf it was about. And honestly none of those images make a lot of sense if you haven’t played the game.

A little bit of this attitude survived into the commercials for Final Fantasy VIII:

but Square/Enix has generally been more modest since then.

What’s also really notable about all those FFXV ads is that they mean a lot of fan speculation about the devs’ intentions is 100% true. I.E. they intend to equal/surpass FFVII both in terms of what it meant for the series and for gaming in general. The “Reclaim Your Throne” tagline isn’t just referring to Noctis’ quest.

I don’t know that FFXV being as huge/influential as FFVII is possible per se, FFVII was a perfect storm in a lot of ways. That moment won’t come again. But FFXV, if good/successful, could be a game changer.

Squeenix seems to believe it will be. We’ll see on November 29th
