Final reflective statement
My main objective for this semester was to identify a design distinctive style that I felt was an expression of myself, but ansi and most importantly develop a genuine process of design thinking and creation. Initially, early on in the year, most of my thought went into the visual aspect of my work, rather than the conceptual. Moreover, I found the majority of my design work was aesthetically driven, with the intellectual idea being often a mere afterthought. But through this subject, Communication Design, I have learnt the true meaning of that other word, ‘communication’. However, I do not view these two words separately, but as one unified method of delivering an idea with a strong visual component. Through my research I discovered many interesting periods and movements in art and design history, with the Bauhaus movement being my favourite. Bauhaus school of design in interwar Germany was such and original concept that has arguably influenced design forever. I was particularly inspired by discovering the meaning of ‘Gesamtkunstwerk’. A new skill I have enjoyed acquiring is collaging, as the progressive decline of physical creation is becoming less and less prevalent due to the presence of technology which great worries me.

The Artist/designer/musician/filmmaker/writer! i was lucky enough to interview was Ant Keogh..
This was one of the emails i sent him:
Hello Ant,
Thank-you again for agreeing to be in my project,
I have made an effort to keep the interview as simple as possible and are hoping we can get through the whole production in one hour. Would it be most efficient for you, if I came to you and we found a quiet spot to film and chat? I could come a little beforehand to set-up the camera and framing.
The form of the interview will be a short film, consisting of footage with you answering the questions with inserted stills and clips of your work. In addition, I have an idea to create a more engaging interview, with you potentially drawing small illustrations in response to my questions (either during or in between?)
Here are the questions I will be asking you in the interview, so you contemplate:
Note - some of the following questions may overlap and therefore do not need to answered in full detail…
You are what some would refer to as unique ’Jack of all trades’ or a ‘Renaissance man’ in a creative sense… how do you find the balance that allows you to explore and master so many forms of expression?
As a versatile creator, how do you categorise yourself… Do you refer to yourself as an artist, conceptualizer, designer or none or all of those things? Why is this so?
Who inspired you to become a creative/designer/artist? When did you know?
What is the work that has most defined you?
What was your first design job you did? Did you love it or hate it?
/when did you know you wanted to dedicate your life to this field?
If you could pick one field of expression, what would you choose?
What do you see for the future of creativity? And how will you fit into that?
/what do you feel is the most important responsibility for creative thinking today?
Are you creating for yourself ultimately, to meet your own standards?
What was the most important thing I learned from Grap2199?
