Women hiding in front of men disguised as their beards and pants [x]
If you want to talk about women disappearing in the consumer's image of hegemonic masculinity...
When most people travel, they typically come home with countless photos: selfies, playful poses with friends, iconic landmarks, etc. But when photographer Michael Hughes is abroad, he goes about it a little differently.
Meta-consumerism, anyone?
“What’s Next?” Both of my brothers recently had kids that more than likely complete their families. They’re both older than me, so it makes sense they’re at a different stage. They met and married their wives, they bought dogs and they had kids, all in a nice little sequence.
In other words, not conforming to the hegemonic notion of where a girl in our culture should be at 26. This is a personal essay, but I think the accounts of how others respond to her "unusual" status is very telling of just how powerful our cultural preconceptions can be, and how damaging.
This was a really interesting counter-commercial done by Greenpeace in answer to Dove's Onslaught, essentially calling the company out on wasting resources.
Dove's Campaign for Real Beauty: Onslaught
Dove's Campaign for Real Beauty: Evolution. A short film on just how distorted our modern depiction (and thus, perception) of beauty can be.
Guinness takes another tack, breaking stereotypes about masculinity and beer drinkers. I'd love to hear a paralympic athlete's thoughts on this.
