IN THE WRECKAGE ( poppy & aubrey )
Exiting the library, a sigh in relief that she could now go home and sleep. Her mind tripped over all the information she’d just stuffed into it, and when she drifted off twice in ten minutes she knew it was time to head home. Forcing her brain to stop thinking about her studies, she thinks of one thing - bed.
Hesitating at the corner, she’d been taking the long way home during the day to just avoid people, however it was late. Huffing out a breath the young women, turned down the downtown street. The whole place seemed deserted, most shops had their lights turned off, words ‘CLOSED’ on each door she passes.
Something about being tired made her sense annoyingly sensitive, she almost flinched at the overpowering floral aroma. Yet there was something else too, slowing her pace she looked over at the Never Wilts flower shop. Something about the van parked outside seemed strange, would Aubrey drive a van like that? She’d never seen it before, and although Poppy avoided Aubrey and her brother most days, she did notice things still. She watched a moment longer, seeing a figure move quickly to the front of the van, and suddenly they were pulling away at much to fast of a speed.
Staring after the van, Poppy couldn’t help herself now. Moving across to stand in front of the flower shop, she couldn’t believe the sight. The placed was wrecked, a complete mess, and the stench of fear was worst than the flowers. Thinking over her options Poppy sighed outwardly, pulling her phone from her pocket. Aubrey should know, she needed to know. Standing there a few minutes longer staring at the number, she finally pressed the button to place it to her ear.
“Hey,” Poppy said slowly, unsure how to open this, how to explain what she was looking at. “I think you should come down to Never Wilts, it looks like someone broke in, it’s a mess.”
Kit noted the change in her tone but didn’t comment - it was clear to him that his words held a meaning she didn’t wish to share with a complete stranger. “Well, you will find it.” He said reassuringly. “I’m sure of it.” Taking a sip of his tea, he held the warm cup in his hands. “I’m Kit by the way - Professor Kit Wraithwell.”
“I hope you’re right,” though she let smile form again, watching him sip his tea. “Professor, fancy title there Professor Kit. I’m Poppy, Poppy Beckett, if we get to be great friends I might let you call me Pop.” Her tone was light and teasing, she couldn’t help it. She officially knew a professor outside of a classroom.
Aubrey made her way into the familiar clothing store, she hadn’t been in the store in awhile but she had to make her way in there eventually. She pulled the door open and saw Poppy sitting at the front of the store, clearly not paying much attention. She turned around just as she stood up, Aubrey knew this was going to be awkward. As Poppy approached her, Aubrey spun around. “Uh, no. I’m okay. I just came in here… to see you.”
Poppy’s smiled dropped when she came face to face with Aubrey. A year ago, Poppy would’ve been happy to see her, maybe even hugged her. Yet here they were. “Oh,” she said slowly, unsure what she wanted. “Well, here I am. What can I do for you?”
“Oh, yeah.” Dawn smiled faintly, coming up to stand next to her and look at the many shelves of spices line up ever so neatly but in absolutely no helpful order. “I’ve stood here plenty of times looking for what seems like a needle in a haystack. You’d think there was some sort of order to it but there isn’t unfortunately.” Crinkling her nose slightly, Dawn spotted the garlic powder and reached out to grab it before handing it over to Poppy. “Here you go. Can I help you find anything else?”
Taking the powder from her she smiled, “thank you, yeah it’s hard to find it.” Looking down at her list, and at her basket she shrugged, “no I think I might have everything, but uh- are you okay?” Even though Poppy wasn’t always the best at picking up on others feelings, normally only focusing on herself. She was able to see the look on the others face though, it felt like she should ask.
Browsing through the store, Allegra glanced over at the familiar voice and realized it was the young woman who she had a brief conversation from before about school. Shaking her head, a gentle smile appeared on the woman’s lips as she politely replied with, “No thank you. I’m not looking for anything specific just looking around.” She stood in front of a rack and began rummaging through the different clothing, “How’s the studying going?” she asked.
Poppy raised her brows when she recognized the other women, a smile forming. “Okay, if you need anything, I’m here.” Though before she could step away, she heard the others question. “It’s going, it’s gotten a little easier. I’ve been working hard to try and get everything done. How’s your work going?”
“I’m good, thank you,” Zara smiled softly, heading further into the racks of clothing that were dotted around the little shop. “I’m just looking to replace these overalls you had last summer, so I’m hoping you got them again this summer so I can be smart and stock up on them and never run into this risk again,”
“I’m not sure we have the exact ones, but,” Poppy turned and walked over to a rack of clothing. “We have a few over here, some darker wash, some lighter. There are some longer and shorter ones, I’m pretty we even have dress overalls. Does that help at all?”
“You sound thrilled at working minimum wage.” Sienna grinned, idly browsing the racks of clothing. “But don’t worry about me - I’m fairly sure I can manage to navigate my way through a clothing store.” She picked up a white dress a mere moment later, idly staring at the fabric with something akin to mild panic.
“Yes, well I gotta pay the bills somehow.” Poppy offered a closed mouth smile, it was hard for her to be friendly knowing that had her and Asher stayed together, they’re anniversary would’ve been coming up. Forcing the thought away, she nodded. “Are you sure? There’s a dressing room near the back of the store if you’d like to try on sizes.” Though Poppy didn’t move, just raised her brows at the other.
____ HEAVY HEART (p+a.)
“Just get out.” He hated the way it sounded like he was pleading with her, a werewolf. The last thing that he wanted to hear was that she was sorry or that she missed him or that she wished things were different because it was rare that he didn’t have the same thoughts. Asher could deal with many species. He worked with the dragons, he served the vampires, he could coexist with so many of them, but werewolves? They’d never been safe. They’d never had an upside to them and he couldn’t see anything other than the terrifying images stuck in his mind from full moon hunts with other hunters. All he could still see was his father and how they’d taken that man from Asher.
Now they’d taken her as well and even if she was right before him, even if she was still living and breathing, Poppy was as good as gone. There was nothing they could do now.
“Just get out and stay away from me, Poppy. What’s the point? We can’t be together. We can’t be friends. We can’t even be in the same room anymore. All you’re doing is hurting yourself and I won’t be responsible for that.” Because he still had this almost undeniable urge to kiss her. Every time she was upset, he wanted to hold her close and chase off every demon, but Asher couldn’t do those things for her anymore and he knew it. He’d accepted it. Now she needed to. “Stop wasting our time.”
Part of her wanted to scream, to yell, to say no. It wasn’t fair, they could work it out, if he just let them. Poppy wanted to throw things and tell him none of this was fair, that she wasn’t just hurting herself. The small moments that she got with him were the best she’d had for days. Not seeing him hurt, not being around him, in the same room, it all made her ache.
Asher was it for her, she had no one else, and wanted no one else. She’d rather fight with Asher, fight for Asher, than be with anyone else. Why couldn’t he see that?
“You know what? Fine, Asher. I’m more than willing to attempt to keep at this because I know I can be with you and I can be friends with you. It’s you Asher, you are the one who can’t. I can’t change this, I’m just trying to get through this and... Whatever, I’ll leave.” Giving a huff, she knew getting angry would do nothing, she wouldn’t give up on him but she’d have to let him be for at least while. Grabbing the door, she yanked it open, standing there a moment longer. “Bye Asher,” she said, finally walking out and letting the door close behind her.
I know it’s selfish, but I wanted to be your forever.

Dawn had been picking up more shift at the grocery store - taking on shifts to be a bag person and a stock helper, even a custodian - anything to keep her from spending too much time in the empty hotel room she once shared with Lacey. The extra money wasn’t too bad, either but it was draining her. She hadn’t had the energy to do the concealment charm for her visible bruises, but luckily with time and a lot of makeup she was able to make herself presentable.
“HI,” She forced a light smile as she approached a customer looking lost after just having cleaned up a spill in the next aisle over. “Can I help you find something?”
Poppy had been putting off going to the grocery store for as long as she possible could. It was more out of pure laziness, she’d been so accustom to come home and food would be there. It wasn’t the case anymore. When she noticed that she had next to no food in her fridge, she caved and decided it was time. Writing up a few ingredients she wanted to get, trying to get better at the whole cooking thing, she headed out.
Now though, she stood in the middle of the aisle trying to find the garlic powder. Honestly, she’d been staring at the spices for five minutes it shouldn’t be this hard. “Oh, uh - yeah actually. Do you know where the garlic powder is? Because for the life of me I cannot see it, it’s likely right there but I just can’t find it.”
Poppy sat tapping her foot against the wooden table, her mood had dropped over the week. When the bell on the door rang, she wanted to growl. Warn them to leave, she really didn’t want to interact with anyone. Sighing loudly, she slipped off the table, plastering on a clearly forced smile. “Can I help you with anything? We just got a bunch of new clothing, you know, gearing up for summer after all.”
____ HEAVY HEART (p+a.)
For some reason, he hadn’t expected her to agree. Easier? The word should have fit, but anything with Poppy was always complicated. Nothing ever seemed easy with her and he wasn’t sure why she thought him killing her would come easily. If that were the case, he would have just done it the day he’d found out. Didn’t she understand that the hard part was killing her?
He could speak about it, threaten it for days and weeks and years, but he wasn’t sure he could pull the trigger on her. It was this glaring issue, that one word that he hated was everything she was now. Werewolf. “Okay.” Asher wasn’t sure why he was agreeing. If it came to, he knew he could cock the gun and set it right, but he wasn’t sure that the words were true.
“I’ll promise you that. Not that I owe you anything.” Asher couldn’t deny her anything. Despite everything she’d put him through, after all their bullshit, this was where he was with Poppy. “If it gets to that point,” and he knew it would from what he’d seen of werewolves his entire life, “I’ll do it.” Many hunters ignored the treaty. They ignored all pacts as it went against everything they were about, but he’d never felt much of a conscience about killing before, but he’d known her. Hell, Asher still knew every part of her, had spent months when they were together memorising every inch of her inside and out.
Asher knew her favourite colour, the way she tasted, the perfume she always went for, even knew what she wanted to be when she was six. Killing that wasn’t as easy as killing a bloodthirsty wolf controlled by the moon. Separating her and the wolf was hard for him because he wanted her back, but he knew at the nd of the day, her kind needed to be wiped out. She was dangerous just like the rest of them.
Was this what she wanted? In some way it was, she wanted to not have to suffer to have to spend the rest of her life turning into a monster every full moon. Yet, could she knowingly leaving her family behind? She didn’t have a lot of friends, not anymore. All she really wanted was to be back in Asher’s arms, that all she really knew.
Sucking in a breath at his answer, eyes scanning his face to understand. Would it be easy for him to do it? Would he want to kill her? “I know,” her voice came out in almost of a whisper. “Thank you,” it wasn’t what she came in here for. Honestly, she wasn’t sure what she came in here for. She’d been avoiding him, trying to give him space he needed. Poppy was avoiding everyone involved in his life, hoping that they wouldn’t overlap.
Standing there staring at him unable to find words again. She remembered standing in the parking lot of the high school staring at him, tears forming. No lie could come to her then, nothing she uttered would’ve made a difference. She’d meant to tell him, tell him she was underage at the time, but never did. She was afraid she’d lose him, but now? She wondered if she had truly lost him.
After that she pulled away from any friends she had, pulled away and drew into herself. Only doing school work and doing anything she could find a way to get Asher back. She’d fallen in love with him, and Poppy knew she likely wouldn’t fall out of love.
“I-...I should go.” Poppy said softly, reaching for the door again she couldn’t bring herself to leave until he told her to leave. “Asher,” she looked at the ground again, memories of her past rolled in her mind. “I’m sorry, for everything. I know I’ve said it before, but - I wish I would’ve done things so different, with so many things.” Her eyes slowly reacted his again, opening her mouth again to speak. I still love you, I always will. The words didn’t come out of her mouth, she quickly closed her mouth. What use would it do? He had to hate her, it felt like he hated her.
Her pout brought a smile to his lips - mainly because he had never seen anyone look so simultaneously ridiculous and yet endearing. Shifting slightly in his seat, he turned to face her properly. “Sometimes the things you love are unexpected.” He shrugged. “But if you want the pay off, you have to put in the time.” Rubbing the back of his neck, a light blush filled his cheeks. “Not that you need a stranger lecturing you on that of course.”
His words seemed to hit her harder than she thought, her mind jumped to Asher. Even though she had persuaded him, it was unexpected for her to fall as hard as she did. Even after everything, he still held her heart. “You don’t say so,” she mumbled, even if the words had totally different context. “Sometimes it’s better to hear from someone you don’t have to listen to. Someone who clearly does has found that thing they love.”
