“I won’t fuck with your sister, alright? I’ll find another flower shop,” Chris surrendered, not willing to get into a fight over nothing. “She sort of almost killed me, so I guess I was pretty confident that she was a solid hunter but… why do you think she can’t do it?”

      “Thank you.” He sighed. People could say that he was over protective, but Asher knew the dynamic of his family better than anyone else. “I will apologise on her behalf, but we’re not getting into it, Chris. It’s hunter business. She just can’t.”

Aubrey smiled and laughed through her tears. She had been having a rough week and having this moment with her brother was nice. He always knew just what to say to make things better, she knew he probably didn’t think she had it in her to start hunting again but she wanted to at least get his opinion on it. She nodded along when he mentioned Dad… and although she didn’t truly believe he would be proud of her, it was the thought that counts. 

“Thanks Ash.” She wiped more falling tears from her face. “I just… I want to start training again. Just to be safe, ya know?” She started. “Incase something happens. I can start off small, I need to re-establish myself.” She looked up at her brother, “Do you think it’s a good idea. If you don’t, I won’t do it.” 

      Asher didn’t know how to tell her that he wanted his sister as far away from hunting as possible. Aubrey was softer and it took him and his mother years to realise, but she wasn’t the same. “We’ll see.” He muttered, giving her a final squeeze before releasing her completely. It was a noncommittal answer because training could be fine, but what if she expected it to turn into more?

“Friends are for people who need constant validation; which is something I don’t need. I’m entirely comfortable on my own.”

      “You’re not telling me anything that I don’t know as it is, Gaia. Do you want to repeat yourself some more or do you have anything else to day? If you’re comfortable on our own, why do you need me?”

       “Mmm, pink would be a lovely colour. Esepically for you.. oh, and? If I could offer some input - I think lace for your uniform would be very much required. Lace everywhere.”

       “Is putting me in pink supposed to scare me? I’ll rock a pink shirt. I’ll put on a crushed velvet pink suit if you keep joking about it. I think pink is beautiful. You, my friend, would look great in some taffeta and a nice blush.” What could he say? He had a highly organised and very visually concerned younger sister and somethings stuck.

“Novak, you know how stubborn I am.” replied Valencia with a sigh. Seeing the smile on his face made the hunter feel much better of how they were leaving things off. “Determined as always Asher, I’ll hold you to that then. I hope you’re happy, this was all fucking exhausting to even talk about.” 

      “Oh, get out of here, Plata. Before I make you talk about loyalty with me.” He smirked, giving her a light push. All he wanted was for her to know that he was behind her, that they were in the same corner, but at times it became exhausting having to constantly remind someone that you were their friend.

“With sarcastic remarks and scathing looks - - - did you bump your head? Is that why you’re asking? Oh my lord; you’ve got amnesia. That’s why you’re asking. Do you remember your name? Your name is Asher. It’ll be okay, buddy.”

      “This right here is why you don’t have any friends, Gaia.”

Chris knew that their conversations weren’t always warm and fuzzy, but he didn’t think they were that off. “Okay, your sister actually tried to kill me. Then she told me that not killing me was a mistake. I think that I’m allowed to be a little pissed off.”

      “You’re my friend. She’s my sister. I’m not asking, I’m telling you, man: don’t fuck with my sister.” Asher didn’t want to have an issue, but in the topic of his little sister, there were great lengths he’d go to in order to keep her happy. “She’s not a hunter. She’s not cut out for it. I just don’t need something or someone reminding her of that.”

Aubrey leaned into her brother and wrapped her arms around him and although she didn’t cry, her eyes teared up. She looked up at her brother and didn’t speak for a few moments. She knew he was right… about everything. She sighed and released herself from Asher and said, “but how Asher? I failed that night… and I failed the night when dad died.” She paused for a moment to catch her breath. 

“I need to get back in. I have to train again and be better… Would that make… things better?” She asked. “Would you forgive me for what happened… if I just became a better hunter?” She realized now she was crying, really crying. “Do you think that would make Dad proud?”

      “Aubrey, no.” He sighed, placing a kiss to her cheek and raising a hand to wipe the wetness that trailed down her cheeks. “I’m not going to let you keep beating yourself up over this again. It wasn’t your fault.” It was, but how did he let her live with that guilt? For everything that she was, above all else, Aubrey was his little sister and that mattered more than anything; she mattered more than anything. No one came above her and his mother.

      “I do this so you don’t have to. You don’t have to make anything better. You don’t have to do anything. Dad would be proud of you, like this, working here and doing something you love. As long as you know and understand what our family does, that’s all you need.” Frankly, he didn’t think she could do it. He wasn’t sure if she could take a shot if necessary or trap something that would otherwise kill her. Asher wasn’t sure she’d make the right decision and he didn’t want that hurting her in the end.

Glancing up at the older man, Valencia didn’t know how to respond to that. Instead she remained silently grateful—that despite her hardheaded attitude, Asher was willing to cooperate with her. Her lips curled into a slight smirk, “You sure you’ll be able to tell the difference?” she joked trying to lighten the situation. “…I get it and I don’t blame you if you walk out on me.” 

      “How many times do I have to say it? You’re not going to get rid of me.” He shook his head, smiling in return. He’d pushed her enough today, getting farther than he’d actually expected. “Not walking out. Haven’t yet and it’s not going to happen, but I think I’ve gotten all that I need out of you. Not going to make you say more.”

“Distracting might be a bit of an understatement.” She agreed, resisting the urge to chuck her phone across the cafe. “Still I’m not normally in the habit of calling strangers sneaky bastards - at least not without provocation.” Kitty added with a weak smile. 

      “You’re fine.” He reassured the girl. Nothing she’d said had actually bothered him. “Only thing is you might want to keep better company honestly. If they’re a bunch of sneaky bastards that is.”

      “I’m a man of many talents, you’ll soon find it out. I’m seeing you in all pink. It’ll be great.”

Part of her wanted to scream, to yell, to say no. It wasn’t fair, they could work it out, if he just let them. Poppy wanted to throw things and tell him none of this was fair, that she wasn’t just hurting herself. The small moments that she got with him were the best she’d had for days. Not seeing him hurt, not being around him, in the same room, it all made her ache. 

Asher was it for her, she had no one else, and wanted no one else. She’d rather fight with Asher, fight for Asher, than be with anyone else. Why couldn’t he see that? 

“You know what? Fine, Asher. I’m more than willing to attempt to keep at this because I know I can be with you and I can be friends with you. It’s you Asher, you are the one who can’t. I can’t change this, I’m just trying to get through this and… Whatever, I’ll leave.” Giving a huff, she knew getting angry would do nothing, she wouldn’t give up on him but she’d have to let him be for at least while. Grabbing the door, she yanked it open, standing there a moment longer. “Bye Asher,” she said, finally walking out and letting the door close behind her.

“So I’m not too far off then,” Chris stated, “I’ll work on finding an emo song that fits you later, maybe that’ll turn this off-day into the best day of your life,” He encouraged, nodding appreciatively. Surely he could find teenager-Chris music that would fit Asher’s brand of angst. “I’ve always sort of wanted some ink, but I can’t figure out where to get it where it wouldn’t look trashy as hell.”

      “I fI were you right now, I’d be a little bit more careful with my words.” Asher grit out, not exactly enjoying the company of Christopher for the moment. “You should be thinking about not fucking with my sister, my dude. Because I talked to her, she’s not happy.”
