from his review of Fanboys 2009 - here's the end of the review too:
“Fanboys” is an amiable but disjointed movie that identifies too closely with its heroes. Poking a little more fun at them would have been a great idea. They are tragically hurtling into a cultural dead end, mastering knowledge which has no purpose other than being mastered, and too smart to be wasting their time. When a movie’s opening day finally comes, and fanboys leave their sidewalk tents for a mad dash into the theater, I wonder who retrieves their tents, sleeping bags, portable heaters and iPod speakers. Warning: Mom isn’t always going to be there to clean up after you.
A lot of fans are basically fans of fandom itself. It's all about them. They have mastered the "Star Wars" or "Star Trek" universes or whate
Little mean but very true, especially with the hyper huge fandoms that have more of these extremes in them. I know at the point you're doing things he's writing about it's more about the belonging and community than the piece of media itself, but if you're centralising your life around things other people make, can you really live your life to the fullest?
As someone who (maybe not “loves” but) likes fandom. In general. Whose main hobby is experiencing stories. I can't imagine letting a fandom, especially if it was a singular specific fandom, becoming such a core part of my identity just so I can not think about anything outside of it I want to escape from.
oxidized copper is such a beautiful color palette. The rich reds with the cool teals. Such a vibrant combo. No one is doing it like her.

having feelings that contradict your morals is soooo fucking annnoooooyyyiiingggggg. can the emotions and logic department get on the same page im tired of having to like strangle myself into being a tolerable person
I think now might be a good moment to mention it. I'm writing the second piece of fanfiction in my life. It's a rewrite of the finale of the Among Us TV show, in accordance with my rant from a week-and-a-half ago.
I'm around 3000 words in now and not to toot my own horn, but I think I'm kinda cooking with this one.
It's almost 1am now, I'm going to go to sleep for the next 5 hours now, bye bye.
Once when I was in undergrad, someone described something as “problematic” in class and our professor was like, “That’s cool, but ‘problematic’ doesn’t really mean anything. It means that the thing you’re describing has a problem, and in and of itself that’s not bad. Art, especially, should always have problems, or else it’s not interesting and not art, either. It sounds like you’re trying to say that this is bad, but you don’t want to say ‘bad.’ Is that right?”
So from then on whenever one of us called something problematic, he would make us talk it out until we could name the “bad” thing we were hinting at. In this particular class, 7/10 it was some type of oppression, and the remainder was like, “I’m uncomfortable because this is very new/confusing/pushing boundaries that made me feel safe.”
Once we stopped calling things “problematic” and stopping at that, class got way more interesting and... we all had to say, like, “that’s racist” or “that’s misogynistic” or “ew capitalism gross” out loud, which a lot of us had never done in a classroom before. Or we had to be like, “Uhhh... I’m not sure what’s so bad?” and confront our own beliefs and that was maybe even more useful.
Anyway. Whenever I see the word problematic, I can’t help but think of this professor being like, “Good starting point, now let’s get specific.” I think when we have to commit to saying “that’s ___” it requires a lot more careful thought about the truth and impact and complexities of whatever we’re claiming. Sometimes there really is some bullshit afoot, and also sometimes it’s art, and it should be full of problems, because that’s what art is.
a rather unfortunate hobby of mine is recreating undertale/deltarune songs so that i can replace the melody with megalovania. i dont know why i do this
like this
i will not be stopping
you and i both know these bars are too far apart to stop me
aaand another one
cant forget this one
probably something like this
[ID: A bunch of Undertale tracks with their instruments set to play Megalovania (Once Upon a Time, mus_st_him, Death by Glamour, Your Best Friend, Temmie Village, Start Menu, and Power of "NEO") with tags reading "#I think this might be illegal actually op #go to undertale jail" and a pic of OP's avatar in Papyrus' shed, and a comment by @cherub-investigation0802 reading "Okay now Im curious of what the inverse is like" with Megalovania set to play Fallen Down. /End ID]

the thing is, stephen king is generally pretty good at creating complex, well-rounded characters, which makes it all the more jarring when one of those characters abruptly comes out with what i'll term a "kingism". i don't know how best to define a kingism other than "you'll know it when you see it". it's the voice of the author intruding on the voice of the character, and in this case the voice of the author has a bad sense of humour and is ravenously, inexplicably horny
random example of a kingism aka "he would not fucking say that"
this too is a kingism
one of the hallmarks of a kingism is that when a character is being Horny On Main (or In Maine), they can never do it in a normal way. they have to come up with a sequence of words that nobody has ever said before in the history of the english language. here's another example:
i'm starting a collection
i like my madness character
i just apolitically killed the king like i have no agenda or whatever im just the jester here but i stabbed him anyway LOL all the courtiers and advisors are trying really hard to figure out who did it LOL all of them wanted him dead but they dont know whose scheme it was so nobody can promulgate a coherent political maneuver based on the circumstances LOL just playing my lute #MyLute
Yes, this. A stunning number of people will default to "because it's illegal." Teaching an intro-level bioethics course will demonstrate real fucking fast that a lot of the population just lets legality stand in for morality.
So... the Among Us show, amirite?
[very slight spoilers until the cut]
I saw one Tumblr post about it a week ago along the lines of "This is supposed to be brainrot, why is this good?", which honestly made me think they were talking about something on Youtube shorts some guy made in his basement and not a full TV show made by a professional studio. But once I found out what it is, I watched it last Friday and...
It's good. You should watch it too. Chop chop now, I believe in you, it's around 2 hours long in its entirety. You can pirate it if you want, I wouldn't pay however-much for Paramount+ either. I liked it. With how much I thought about it throughout the last 3 days I'd even say I liked it a lot. Yeah, some plot points could use some more time to breathe. And it takes a lot more time that I'd expect to set the impostors up (Doesn't it take them until like episode 7 out of 10 to come up with the idea they can vent? Even though it was shown to the audience in eposide 2?). And two murders depend on an element not established in the game. And my favourite died in episode 4 (though my 2nd, 3rd and 4th favourites were the last three alive so I can't really complain). And the reaction many people have when they learn about this show existing... surely says something about how we view cross-media adaptations.
And I heard some people say that since it was basically made almost 2 years ago and is just only released now because fuck you I guess, then it's unlikely it'll ever get a continuation (though I wouldn't say it's impossible. Everyone I heard talking about it so far liked it, and season 1 sets up a lot of things that can be expanded upon).
Still, it's cool. It's funny. It's thematically consistant and pays its theme off in the finale well and it's structured and paced at least competently for a series of 10 11-minute long episodes. Except there was one more problem I couldn't put into words until I thought about it for longer, something that bugs me more than really anything else.
The ending is fucking boring.
And it's not even the simple kind of boring where you just don't care. I cared about it. And I liked it. Maybe even as much as I did the rest of the show, which, as I said, is a lot. It's a good ending. But it's still boring.
Now, I haven't talked much about this with other people, so I'm not sure how common this sentiment is, but...
