Ace’s T-shirts + the innocent child

This is something that’s been brought up by quite a few people including in the SBS of the corresponding volume, but that I wanted to deconstruct a bit more: Ace’s flashback T-shirts.

As said by Oda in the SBS, he wanted to show that Ace and Luffy wore different shirts every day and while Luffy got animal pun shirts, this is the theme he came up with for Ace. In case you were wondering, no it’s not any more normal in Japanese to wear a shirt that just says a random edgy words like “pillage” than it is in English ahah. But since this is One Piece, the words aren’t exactly random, and are sort of their own background gag.

Basically the words on Ace’s t-shirts more or less describe what’s happening on panel, such as:
