THE RED CIRCLE IS INSANE WHY AREN’T WE TALKING ABOUT IT!?
Spoilers and truly excessive waffling ahead, expand at your own peril:
In pt.3, John fell in a lift shaft and thought he was going to fucking die. The contrast between this scene (serious, honestly terrifying) and the one before (just funny and silly) is stark, and emphasises the DROP, not only the literal drop of John falling in the lift shaft, but also the tone completely shifting. We go from “ha the mic broke” to “…oh shit” SO quickly in a way that probably wouldn’t work without the pitch fuckery.
I think more people should be insane about the potential parallel between the lift shaft and Reichenbach.
AND SHERLOCK CLIMBED DOWN AFTER HIM, AND HE WAS PREPARED TO CARRY HIM DOWN. FUCK, DUDE!
AND. (This bit is important to me): when Gregson is mad at Sherlock, Sherlock tries to be nice in part 4. It’s a funny scene UNTIL you notice this:
That’s not how Sherlock talks. You know who he sounds like here? With the nickname ‘big guy’ and the way he’s messing around with Gregson’s name?
He sounds like John.
SHERLOCK’S TEMPLATE FOR AFFECTIONATE AND INOFFENSIVE CONVERSATION IS JOHN.
I can’t tell whether to be heartbroken because obviously Sherlock shouldn’t have to try and replicate someone else’s likeable behaviour to be forgiven for whatever he’s done, or if I want to talk about how John is, in his view, someone who is categorically impossible to dislike.
These fictional guys got me FUCKED UP.
