Dolors Canals i Farriols (1913-2010)

Dolors Canals i Farriols is known as one of the promoters of the “Escola Nova de Catalunya”. As she was born and raised in Barcelona, she is mostly admired there. In fact, her pedagogy is currently valid, and it’s used in some Catalan schools. Her line of thought is based on the acknowledgment of the children as people who deserve full respect and admiration. Also, every child is considered to have a wide range of possibilities and opportunities. The teachers are encouraged to address each student according to his/her needs and capabilities. Moreover, she was convinced that motor development is essential and that through it the children could acquire knowledge and be related to the world. Dolors Canals i Farriols was influenced by Hannah Arendt because she considered that a school would be good when it represents the current culture so that the child can have an impact on the future. Finally, she is attributed the great quote: “the child deserves the best, inspiration and excellence”.

I hope I may have given some insights of this fantastic pedagogue, who I personally like very much.

Feel welcomed!

As I already said, I am a Primary Education Teacher. Today I am going to present the place where I work: The W School, whose name I won’t specify for confidentiality issues. Which values represent better our ethos? We believe a good and relaxed atmosphere is vital to produce significant learning. Furthermore, we want that students feel confident in themselves and the knowledge they acquire, that there is a fluid communication within all the school and that they can be themselves making the most of their possibilities. Which are our pedagogical aims? We stand for an inclusive school which educates students who are competent and who have values. The pupil is the protagonist of his/her learning and, in order to adapt to the different rhythms and types of learning, all assignments are focused so that multiple intelligences can be developed. We have divided the school in spaces which we expect to work in a more experiential way and in contact with nature and the outdoors. Now you know the main points of my school. What do you think?
