Trojan War figures - Apollo and Cassandra (detail) Fresco uncovered in a black dining room excavated in Pompeii Pompeii Archaeological Park, 2024
Apollo granted Cassandra the gift of prophecy, expecting her to submit to him. When she later refused his advances and resisted his attempt to force himself upon her, Apollo retaliated by ensuring that, although her prophecies would be true, they would never be believed.

Devil masks in folk art generally represent a complex duality, acting as powerful symbols for protection, social commentary, and spiritual transformation. Rather than strictly representing evil, these masks often function to ward off evil spirits, represent the chaos of nature, or mock social and colonial oppressors.
Key meanings and functions include:Apotropaic (Protection): In many cultures, such as Sri Lanka, masks are used in ceremonies to drive away diseases and negative energies.
Similarly, in Japan, Oni masks are worn to scare away bad luck and evil spirits.
Cultural Resistance: In Costa Rica, Boruca "diablito" (little devil) masks are a symbol of indigenous resistance, designed to mock and battle the Spanish Conquistadors.
Social Mockery: In Mexico, devil masks used during festivals like Cinco de Mayo can act as satirical tools, mocking historical colonisers.
Duality and Balance: Many Andean masks represent the confrontation between good and evil, often highlighting the duality of life (such as day vs. night or past vs. future).
