Murderbotâs friendship with ART has HUGE vibes of âyouâre my only friend whoâs neurodivergent the same way I am.â Like, Murderbot is super glad when itâs around its humans and can present as the rogue SecUnit it is rather than masking and pretending to be either an augmented human or a SecUnit still under the control of its Governor Module. But it still canât really, truly, fully be itself around its humansâit still has to filter itself. And with ARTâyeah, they bother each other a lot, but fundamentally I think theyâre both really glad to be able to drop the filters and be exactly the kind of deeply caring (but also rude) assholes they are inside.
Not me sitting in a lawn chair with a flashlight and a hockey stick chasing away raccoons from the baby kitten underneath our deck who refuses to come out! Been trying to trap this kitten for 2 days. We were in bed and then I heard a SCREAM so now Iâm on the kitten night watch. Chasing away raccoons. Iâve seen the same one six times now in the last 2.5 hours
Donât know if the scream was the kitten or the raccoon just being a raccoon and no idea if kitten is injured but here I am at 1:44am sitting in my deck with a hockey stick and very sleep deprived guarding this dumbass kitten who wonât come out from under the deck
Kitten is too light to trigger the cage to close so Iâve got a bottle and string rig set up. Been trying to catch this backyard goblin for 4 days now. Just living under our deck lol

We live in the drawer and are Very Feral and Very Spooky but the rage is melting away a little bit everyday
Weâve got really bad ringworm but look how far weâve come!! We had our first vet appointment earlier this week and weâre doing so great despite the ringworm and intestinal parasites. We even had our first bath this week.
We have unlocked some levels
Thought Iâd update yâall! Weâre currently fostering this bĂŠbĂŠ after trapping him when he was living under our deck for about five days.
Weâve been calling him Woodley; heâs about 9/10 weeks old with a really bad case of ringworm thatâs resulted in almost complete hair loss of his tail. He had his first round of vaccines and dewormer and is being treated for the ringworm and some intestinal parasites.
He is an incredibly spicy foster baby. Iâve fostered around 28 feral kittens (most from the neonatal age) because I used to be a veterinary technician. Somehow even after my employment I just keep finding feral kittens. The curse of the vet tech lmao
Anyway, heâs getting boosters and his FeLV (feline leukemia) test in a few weeks and will have been about a month into his ringworm treatment by then and hopefully can get him into a rescue group while still fostering him because we have a cat dad extraordinaire adult cat who LOVES foster kittens and teaches them the all important cat socialization, grooming, and healthy play.
Unsure about coat length, I would guess heâll be a medium hair. As for his color, he seems to be a chocolate colored kitty but who knows if it stays that way. Weâve had him for 2.5 weeks now and itâs some real slow socialization progression but heâs really made some strides in the past two days and demands snugs now (even though he forgets who I am the minute I put him down lmao).
Hereâs hoping we donât end up with a fourth cat lmao
Update: we are completely medically cleared!!! Ringworm has healed, no more intestinal parasites and we are FIV/FeLV negative. Woodley had his second vet appointment yesterday and got the all clear and his booster vaccines. Now we can really focus on finding him a loving home!
Woodley got to meet our cat Fletcher today who is cat dad extraordinaire and he also posed for a mini photo shoot

Please enjoy some recent photos of Woodley who I think is going to be an enormous cat lmao. His personality has really started to shine and heâs just such a sweet and playful kitten. Also his fur is growing longer! He is becoming a fluffy man! We are in danger of having a fourth cat at this point!!

when murderbot had just borked its governor module, it was, for the first time, confronted with decisions like "can i help this person, or will that give me away?" and "if i follow this order (in order to protect my secret) and something bad happens, is it my fault because i could have said no?" it was constantly having to weigh the wellbeing of its clients against its own safety, right?
enter sanctuary moon, a world full of humans for whom mb is not in any way responsible. mb can't get attached (read: doesn't want to get attached) to real-life humans in part because bad things can happen to them, things that maybe mb could have prevented. the same is not true of fictional characters! whatever happens to them onscreen isn't mb's job to fix. whatever happens to them can't be on mb's conscience. media is a safe place for mb because, among other reasons, mb can't affect the narrative and therefore nothing that happens in the show is its fault. at a time when mb was being faced with all sorts of horrible moral dilemmas, media gave it a way to care about the wellbeing of humans without the moral dilemmas.
okay so taking this a step further. i think it's kinda funny that mb thinks art is such a baby for being upset when fictional characters die. art isn't used to being powerless, bud! art isn't used to weighing the benefit of saving somebody against the risk of being sold for parts. "people die and there's nothing i could do about it even if i wanted to" might be a nice bit of freedom for you, but art is stuck on the "people die" part. in art's world, it can make sure people don't die because it has that kind of power over its environment and not all that much to fear from exerting that power.
when art is actually put in a situation in network effect where it doesn't have that power, it doesn't hesitate to take the chance to save its crew at the risk of losing its relationship with mb. i wonder if that's a small part of why mb is so upset - not just that it was used, but that art didn't even do it the courtesy of having a moral crisis over using it. whereas art was probably like, "i lied to you and manipulated events so you wouldn't be confronted with a moral crisis over this, and yet you're still upset with me? what's not clicking??"

And i think what gets me is that ART, if it will excuse the understatement, is beyond a doubt the smartest person there. A phenomenally intelligent ship-sized research super ai. It could probably run thousands of scenarios and plays about how to get its friend back
But what is actually does, what its first instinct and only plan is, is to fire down on these people until they are too afraid or too dead to keep murderbot away
This is blunt and inelegant, very effective, and most importantly, vindictive. A big showy display of force and anger at what they did, who they dare took (and who they dare took it from). This is the murdering rogue ai that people are so worried about, because i do not doubt that if art's humans weren't there, it really would just slaughter them
The generally humorous tone of The Murderbot Diaries and the fact that it has quickly become my comfort series does little to distract from the fact that the constructs are truly one of the most horrifyingly dystopian concepts Iâve read in fiction.
The first aliens mankind encountered evolved under a blue super-giant sun and use photosynthesis. They have more in common with plants than animals. They found the human practice of eating other beings weird and barbaric, but they really freaked out when they found out about vegans.
I love the Murderbot/Gurathin dynamic because Gurathin was a dick to MB so he could be sure MB wasn't a danger to his friends and now holds no ill-will. Meanwhile Murderbot is still super salty at Gurathin for being such a douchebag during the events of the first book. Both sides are super understandable and I just wanna see them interact some more.
It may well be that Murderbot didn't have the luxury of explicitly disliking someone until Gurathin. So, the ability to dislike someone, hold a grudge, and then express that dislike out loud is a luxury it's never had before. And now it can. And it's adorable.
Please, reblog! IItâs called self defense. Apart from having here, in the US, one of the highest cases of homicide and rape in the world and high rate of GBV, think about how this could help your mother or sister
