#a period piece kinda... shellshocked retired soldier #who comes home to a farm he has to clean up and run solo #the ptsd is a constant struggle but he starts to let go a little #maybe abandons certain strict routines; falls asleep in the barn/amongst the livestock #grows a beard and finds a bf with a similar history and a protective supportive kinda vibe #i'll probably just play around with this idea and then drop it but it's nice? he's nice and soft and good?

does an under-the-breath angry utterance of a name qualify as a greeting, or have the rules been bent some for hux’s benefit? either way, they’re getting nothing more than a ‘ren’ and a look that suggests he’s just smelled something foul. all customary, but unequivocally short of pleasant.

         ‘ i can see you’re occupied, ’ he says, more sardonic and less expressive than should be allowed. he begins rolling his sleeves, doesn’t bother looking around to confirm it’s only the pair of them ( he knows ). ‘ shall i come back later? ’

commentating on his own doings may be an unattractive habit, but it is significantly harder to correct than to succeed with an apology. he’s been mumbling obscenities at his computer for the last half hour, at least. in his defense, the tunnel vision keeps his company entirely out of mind: the jump of his shoulders and desertion of his smile is no act.

a welcome departure from ava’s interactions with non-ai, this individual’s words don’t read as static, colors, jumbled binary. we’re the same, she thinks, reading him with a clarity she hadn’t realized she’d been missing.
