I wanna talk about Jinx waiving the flag in the intro to Season 2.
As many of you might know, this has become a point of contention for a lot of those critical of season 2 in general. They saw Jinx rallying with the flag and thought to themselves “Jinx will be a revolutionary icon in season 2!” And then they are bitter and angry that it didn’t happen. “Wasted potential!” They scream.
But like with all of the iconography in the opening of season 2, these are all references to stage tragedies and plays. Many have pointed out the Macbeth symbolism for Caitlyn, and the Phantom of the Opera for Viktor. Jinx is no different. She is very clearly a reference for Les Miserables.
But what I find interesting here is that the story of Les Miserables (overly simplified) is about a released convicted felon trying to better himself and do good, while protecting a child he promised to protect all while he is being stalked by a relentless police officer who can’t grasp that he has changed.
Gee… THAT SURE DOES SOUND A LOT LIKE JINX’S ARC IN SEASON 2, DOESN’T IT???
So like… this imagery is reflective of her arc in the season. It’s a direct reference to a play that has similar themes. It makes sense that if all these vignette in the opening are going to be references to other stage plays, the one that sounds the most like Jinx’s internal struggles is the one that they assign to Jinx’s vignette, right?
It just flabbergasts me that so many people saw her waving the flag, recognized it as a call to arms, and just stopped there and expected Jinx to rally all of Zaun against Piltover.
But anyone who even remotely knows the barest minimum of the story of Les Miserables would be able to draw the parallels between Jinx and Valjean.
They never once stopped to think “if they’re referring this play, I wonder if there’s some sort of connection to the story of the play and Jinx’s story.”
