the only thing more powerful than a weird little girl is a weird middle aged woman. the only thing more powerful than a weird middle aged woman is a weird old lady. and the only thing more powerful than a weird old lady is a weird little girl. thus the world is balanced.
i have a long history of by-force befriending people who are terrified of social interaction and of whom i was deeply reminded as i read murderbot but i can never ever tell them that because i think it would feel like an insult instead of the intended utmost possible praise
when they told murderbot it could hang out with them and it looked so genuinely horrified it startled everyone, i thought of early encounters with like three of my best friends. with so much love in my heart
one time i was out drinking with a coworker and i saw our new boss sitting alone at another table in the bar. it was winter on an island so no tourists and we were the only three people in the whole bar. we’d only met earlier that day in a meeting where they briefly introduced themself to us. i walked over to our boss and invited them to sit with us and in their expression they visibly scanned through ann internal script of how to politely turn me down and settled on “I don’t socialize with my employees outside of work.” I said, “I don’t socialize with my bosses outside of work—on the mainland. You just moved to an island in the middle of the off-season.” He said, “Even so.”
I told him to suit himself and went back to the table and told my coworker, “Give him a month.”
we all lived alone in separate company housing in the woods and were quite literally each other’s only daily social opportunities but he dutifully avoided me as soon as we clocked out. after 5 pm he only communicated with me over our work radios where we had to address each other as assigned numbers.
anyway recently my iphone photos app prompted me to view memories from this month last year, which includes a video of him standing barefoot on a kitchen counter at a mutual friend’s house at 2 am, shouting at me in fear while i drunkenly tried to bite his ankles. we’re in matching tiedye shirts, which we made together at a cookout.
doing this to introverts is how i’ve curated my beautiful social menagerie
