it  is  so,    so  difficult  for  alex  to  even  begin  to  process  death,    especially  when  it  comes  to  the  death  of  other  people  and  those  close  to  him.    from  his  perception,    death  is  a  terrifying  thing,    a  thought  that  even  more  amplified  by  the  dreams  induced  by  the  rake.    [   being  exposed  to  the  deaths  and  fates  of  everyone  around  him,    including  his  own,    did  no  good  to  already  fragile  mental  health.   ]    for  him,    there  is  no  way  to  move  on  from  that,    because  that  person  is  gone  and  there  nothing  within  his  power  to  even  bring  them  back.    so,    it’s  better  to  just  reject  reality  and  act  like  they  are  still  there.    he  knows  that  they’re  gone  and  even  acknowledges  that  to  steph  in  one  point  in  the  series,    but  it’s  the  only  way  he  could  possibly  cope  with  the  situation,    as  unhealthy  as  it  is.

also,    alex  has  a  big  tendency  to  just   …   skip  school,    too,    simply  because  he  does  not  have  the  energy  to  actually  go  to  it.    and  if  he  does  go  to  school,    he  probably  skips  particular  periods.    he  doesn’t  really  get  in  trouble  for  anything  else,    just  skipping  class,    and  honestly,    a  lot  of  his  teachers  enjoy  his  presence.    he’s  a  good  student  and  highly  intelligent,    but  an  underachiever.

alex’s  premonitions  have  this  strange  sort  of   . . .   ambiance  to  it.    there’s  an  immense  sense  of  detachment  from  his  surroundings  but  also  gravity  to  it.    they  genuinely  feel  real,    too.     he  feels  his  emotions,    he  has  his  own  thoughts,    he  feels  every  ounce  of  pain  within  it  with  such  intensity,    and  there’s  always  a  mortifying  sense  of  dread  and  terror  whenever  he  wakes  up.    it’s  something  that  weighs  on  him  terribly  and  ultimately,    affects  his  life  to  a  extreme  degree.    he  took  to  sleep  as  a  sort  of  solace  for  so  long  and  just  to  have  that  taken  away  is   . . .   torture.
