Summary: Stiles is pretty sure that Derek Hale hates him, judging by the way he disappears from the room the second Stiles enters. Derek is pretty sure that the entire world knows about his crush on Stiles Stilinski, and that’s why he has to avoid him. For once the werewolf thing isn’t even his biggest secret.

AN: So, guess what I’ve done while quarantined? If you guessed “write fic” you would be right. The highest level of appreciation to @prairiedale1 for being an actual rockstar for charity.

Feelings were stupid, and he was terrible at dealing with them.

“Stiles thinks you hate him,” Cora laughed in his face.

Case in point.

“What?” Derek didn’t know what else to say to that.

“We talked today,” Cora at fifteen was braver than Derek had ever been. “He wants to talk to you, because you keep avoiding him. So congrats, your twenty year plan is working.”

Cora had talked to Stiles today. Now that he focused on her, he could scent some traces of sugar and Adderall and coffee. She’d been close to Stiles then, somewhere towards the ends of the school day. Otherwise the scent would have been covered up by others already. Cora wasn’t the kind of social butterfly that Laura was, but she had plenty of friends.

“That’s not,” Derek started to defend himself.

“That’s not the plan,” Cora tried to sound just like Derek at his grumpiest. “I know, doofus. But you’ve basically been writing Derek Stilinski in your journal for five years now. Don’t you think it’s time to move from dreaming to doing? He isn’t going to be single forever, you know.”

That was not something that Derek particularly wanted to think about. He didn’t want to consider Stiles noticing Erica, or one of the other people in the unofficial Stiles Stilinski fanclub. There was no way that Derek and Erica were the only people who’d noticed his awesomeness - Stiles was too awesome not to be noticed by everyone.

But Derek was growly and possessive and stupid about that thought.

Back in high school, everything about the supernatural had seemed edgy and romantic and exhilarating, but after seeing everything he has, wanting to go back to ignorance is only natural. Only then Derek comes back to Beacon Hills and says he’s in love with him, and everything changes.For the worse.

This is quite a dark fic to be honest, but nothing feels out of character. It also contains one of my favorite lines in any fic ever re: Stiles “Stiles loves all wrong. Something inside him turns it twisted and malignant, and caring always ends up with blood on his hands.” <—- YOU SEE THAT SHIT??? PERFECT– I think about that line a lot. Also, while we have to go through some shit to get there, the end is happy.

Everyday Magic by Skoosiepants

At eleven years old, a murder of crows blanketed the yard outside Stiles’ window and no school owls came.

or -Stiles is determined to live without magic, but magic always finds him, anyhow.

Honestly? I wanted to include a Skoosie fic and there is an embarrassment of riches to choose from, all of them so good– but this is a particular fave. What I love about Skoosie’s writing is how natural the characters are. There’s a realness to them. However extraordinary the circumstances they always feel grounded, and yet at the same time completely recognizable. They exist in the most amazingly crafted miniature universes with delicately realized supporting characters, each one absolutely perfect. This is a HP AU– and you should go read it now.

Seat Belts & Gravity by Calrissian18

People leave in Beacon Hills, give up on the town, the people, on life itself. And he and Derek are still here, six years later, still able to drink a beer and share space. It’s kind of remarkable in a really understated way.

I love fics where Stiles and Derek end up being the only two characters sticking around in Beacon Hills, and friends with benefits is always great. Part of what makes this (and in fact all this author’s work) special is how brilliantly they capture Stiles’ voice. It’s chaotic and busy and peppered with a million obscure cultural references. Also, they never lose sight of the fact that these characters are both kind of assholes, and much as I can squee at soft moments with the best of them, I like these boys best when they’re allowed to be the emotionally stunted idiots we all know they are.

Introduction to Zero-Sum Anthropology by Apocryphal

Stiles buys Derek a set of cooking spoons. Derek retaliates with lunch.The war begins.

The idea of these two dumbasses passive-aggressively giving each other gifts, escalating the situation at every turn is fucking perfect. FIGHT ME. But it would be nothing if the author didn’t have such a fine-tuned understanding of both the characters. From the little glimpses we see of ‘functioning adult’ Derek Hale, to the deft touch with which Stiles’ post Nogitsune trauma is handled. The whole thing is a masterclass in characterization.

Derek wished he would sit down or take his jacket off or something; anything that would indicate he was going to stay for more than a few minutes.

Why do I love this fic so much? Because the dynamic is perfect. Absolutely flawless. Everything from the assumptions Stiles’ makes, to Derek’s awkwardness (and the way he misinterprets Stiles, but has the stunning little moments of insight about himself), to the way they resolve things. I’m always disappointed that it doesn’t have more kudos, because this fic is in my top 5, maybe even my favorite. 

Screaming, Break Me by WhoNatural

“Look, I get that we were fucking around, and it was cool, and then I had to go ruin the fun by getting hurt. So uh, don’t feel like you owe me anything, or that you have to like, take care of me or whatever, because you’re not my boyfriend, and you don’t have to. I don’t expect anything from you, okay?”

Look. Derek’s POV is a bitch to write ok? Can we all agree on that? God knows I’ve tried, and other, better people than me have tried. But this is one of my faves. It’s a slight fic in someways. Not long at all– but the whole thing is shot through with longing, with the kind of raw tension and hopelessness that is kind of the hallmark of his character. Plus it’s hurt/comfort, Derek caring for an injured Stiles? I MEAN COME ON. I AM BUT A SIMPLE HUMAN WOMAN. YOU CANNOT EXPECT ME TO RESIST.
