I’m teaching myself to make better incense. I’ve been making various types for years but felt like it could be better. So I bought a commercial extruder and a grain mill and after a few failed batches, I had a win today. Finally figured out the right ratio of aromatics to binders and got really nice galangal and sandalwood sticks.
I’m staying in for New Year’s Eve, feeling a streak of inspiration so I’m working on a new class for you. Here’s to you and yours and continuing to feed our curiosity in the New Year! How are you celebrating if you are?

Behind the beautiful videos and photos, most of us work in real-life messy and sometimes chaotic spaces. Would I like to work in a perfectly organized gorgeous space? Sure, but I don’t know if my brain would function the way it wants to. I intended to have the hag hut finished by now, but work has to continue and if I take on one more project I think I’ll have a big ol’ menty B.

Bottling up the pretty blue wormwood hydrosol for the shop. It’s so hot here that I’ve been misting myself with it to cool off. It can be used to freshen up hot or irritated skin, as a facial toner, or to make your space more magical. Mosquitos also seem to hate it. 🖤
Seabiscuit is outta control; baking around the clock over here. This one is a ritual offering for Hekate and tomorrow’s dark moon.
Working on the next kit, a sampler of 7 different handmade incenses. Making incense is the messiest and most time and labor heavy task I do, but creating different blends makes it a fun job. Tonight I’m making an all-natural vetiver and bergamot stick and the Hag Hut smells amazing. What’s your favorite incense scent? Do you make your own?

I’ve eaten nearly all of them except those that Astra nibbled on and they’re so much better than a Cheez-Itz. Mine were like cheese shortbread, savory and flaky. Quick and easy recipe for sourdough cheddar crackers.
8 oz block sharp cheddar (or whatever you like), shredded
85 g inactive starter
28 g butter, chopped into small pieces
4 g kosher salt
65 g AP flour
1/2 tap cayenne
Salt to sprinkle on top (go easy)
Preheat your oven to 350F.
Whack everything into your food processor and whiz it around just until you have a cohesive dough.
You can mix by hand too; go for biscuit dough consistency. Don’t overmix.
Roll out dough between two sheets of parchment. You’ll want it about the thickness of pie dough. Aim for a rectangular shape.
If it’s too warm, pop it into the freezer for a few minutes.
Put it on a baking sheet on your bottom sheet of parchment.
Sprinkle with reserved salt or rosemary or other herbs.
Put it into the oven and bake 12 minutes.
Remove from oven and slice into small cracker shapes with a pizza cutter or sharp knife.
Put it back into the oven and bake another 10-12 minutes.
Let fully cool on the same baking sheet.
Make yourself an icy martini with extra olives and eat as many cheese crackers as you can. Share with your cat if they seem interested.
As usual, Seabiscuit overachieved and I ended up making 2 batches of bagels and 2 pizza doughs to store in the freezer. I hate throwing away sourdough discard so tomorrow I’ll make sourdough cheese straws and maybe the intriguing pasta recipe I found.
It’s Sunday; I can finally take a moment to lounge on the sofa, surrounded by books and kittens, mug of hot black tea in hand. Big deep sigh for a moment of rest.
Busy day - have a tiny window of time to try to separate the wormwood essential oil from the hydrosol in between orders. The EO is really sticky and clings to the glass, so maybe @alchemy.slowliving can tell if that’s normal? It’s so blue I’m tempted to swipe the jar with my fingers so I can smell it by itself. Or lick it.

Finally had a little time to use my alembic to distill my wormwood. Was a little afraid I’d blow up the Hag Hut but it went beautifully. I underestimated how much ice I needed and had to run to the store towards the end but got so much essential oil and both it and the hydrosol are blue! I’ve got some free samples to give away with orders - DM me if you want one. I’m going to use the remainder of the hydrosol to try to rework the formula with less alcohol for my Hedge Rider spirit water. The scent is so strong and pure. Totally addicted.
My sister bought me this gorgeous Dungeons & Dragons tarot for Yule last year and I tucked it away and forgot about it. I found it while tidying the Hag Hut and I can’t believe how good it is. The artwork is exactly what you’d expect from D&D… A little goofy, lovely renderings and lots of humor. I did a four card spread on an upcoming life event and the read was ridiculously apropos.
I love that my sister knows how hard my level of nerd goes.

We’re doing the turkey thing tomorrow so I’m puttering with herbs and catching up on housework today. These are chives from my garden, cut just in time before a frost. I’m dehydrating them for chives salt. It’s easy; cut, wash, and dehydrate your chives. Cut them into smaller pieces and grind to a powder in your coffee grinder. Add to kosher salt and there it is, delicious chive salt that’s good on everything savory and makes a pretty handmade gift.
