Hallstatt culture textiles from Hallstatt, Austria showing tartan and plaid patterns, which have been in use in Celtic Iron Age Europe for millennia and which survive today in the traditional garments of Scotland. Woven around 1200 BCE, these examples owe their unusual degree of preservation to their deposition in a salt mine.
