[Oricon] BTS, Foreign Male Singer's First Million 'A Very Happy' RIAJ Certification for July 2019 / 190809

Korean seven-member male group BTS's latest single 'Lights/Boy With Luv' (released on 7/03) was certified million by the Recording Industry Association of Japan (RIAJ) in July 2019.

This million certification for a single is a first for foreign male artists.

In terms of million certification for a single for male artist, it has been 11 years and 11 months since Akikawa Masafumi's 'Sen no Kaze ni Natte' which was certified in August 2007 (※ Note: SMAP's 'Sekai ni Hitotsu no Dake no Hana ~ single version ~ was certified triple million in August 2016).

BTS commented on this recognition, "Thank you very much. We received love from a lot of people as we have worked hard, we are very happy. We will continue to work harder so that we may be able to show you much more good image from now on."

[Oricon] BTS ranks number 1 in Singles, number 1 in first week sales among male artists this year 190710

Korean male group BTS's 10th Japanese single 'Lights/Boy With Luv' recorded 637,000 points on its first week and topped Oricon Weekly Single Ranking dated 7/15. It is the highest first week record for male artists in the same ranking since the start of this year.

Breakdown of weekly points is CD single: 621,000 points, digital single (single song) 7,000 points, digital single (bundle) 1,000 points, streaming (8,000 points).

This is the fourth consecutive single since their 7th single 'Chi, Ase, Namida', with a total of five singles which topped the weekly singles ranking.

With their highest first week record sales, they are the first foreign artist to surpass 600,000 copies. They have also updated their own first place record in history which is 'first week single sales by foreign artist'. This sales number was greatly reflected, thus, they also topped the singles ranking.

Furthermore, the title track 'Lights', an original Japanese song is an impressive medium tempo with positive lyrics and beautiful melody filled with message of hope. It has been 4 years since they filmed a music video for their original Japanese song with the contrast of the light becoming the beautiful finish on the stage of a movie theater.

The 10th Japanese single ‘Lights/Boy With Luv’ released on 7/03 by the seven-member Korean male group BTS sold 467,000 copies and debuted at number 1 in Oricon Daily Singles Ranking dated 7/02.

This record is the total sales in its arrival on stores on 7/02, they have established the highest record ‘first day record sales’ for foreign artists. They have improved their own record exceeding the 327,000 first day sales of their single ‘FAKE LOVE/Airplane pt2’ which was released 11/2018 by 140,000.

[Billboard Japan] Look-ahead: BTS ‘FAKE LOVE/Airplane pt.2’ sold 422,376 copies followed by SUPERNOVA’s first release after reform 181108

According to this week’s CD Singles Sales Report from 181105-181107, BTS 'FAKE LOVE/Airplane pt. 2’ ranks number 1 with 422,376 copies sold.

In terms of BTS Japan releases, it has been 11 months since their last which was 'MIC Drop/DNA/Crystal Snow’ back in December 2017. The title tracks 'FAKE LOVE’ and 'Airplane pt.2’ are Japanese versions of the tracks included in the album 'LOVE YOURSELF 轉 Tear’ released in Korea in May this year. Limited edition A CD includes the music video of 'Airplane pt. 2-Japanese ver.-’

'FAKE LOVE/Airplane pt.2’ has sold 422,376 copies up to now and with this has exceeded approximately 40,000 copies more than 'MIC Drop/DNA/Crystal Snow’ third day sales of 379,101 copies. Moreover, since it ranks 1st having nearly 400,000 difference with that of the 2nd placer, it is almost certain to say that it will rank 1st in this week’s chart.

Korea’s seven-member male group BTS’s album ‘LOVE YOURSELF 結 Answer’ (released 8/24) sold 141,000 copies in a week and ranked at number 1 in Oricon Weekly Album Ranking dated 9/17 (period: 9/03-09). They ranked higher from last week's rank number 2 dated 9/10.

This is their fourth BTS album at rank 1 following 'YOUTH' (released 9/2016), 'LOVE YOURSELF 承 Her' (9/2017), 'FACE YOURSELF' (4/2018). They have maintained themselves with the most record of 'the number of albums in first place by a foreign hip-hop artist’ with a total of four albums.

This is the last of the series of 'LOVE YOURSELF' that they have released. They are now in the middle of their world tour and are planning to have their dome tour beginning 11/13-14 in Tokyo Dome, then Osaka, Nagoya, Fukuoka, a total of 4 cities and 9 performances for the 'BTS WORLD TOUR LOVE YOURSELF~JAPAN EDITION.’

[Oricon] BTS, Foreign hip-hop singer first place record update "Thanks to everyone" 180410

Korea's seven-member male hip-hop group BTS's 3rd Japanese album 'FACE YOURSELF' (released 4/04) sold 282,000 copies and debuted at number 1 in Oricon Album Ranking dated 4/16 (period: 4/02-08).

It is the third time they ranked 1st in album following their previous 5th Korean album 'LOVE YOURSELF 承 ’Her’' (released Sept 2017). They have maintained themselves updated with the most record of 'the number of albums in first place by a foreign hip-hop artist' with three albums.

The album first week sales of 282,000 copies exceeded WANIMA's 'Everybody!!' (released 1/17) first week cumulative sales of 205,000 copies, tentatively ranking 1st among the male artist category for the first half of this year. By way of male & female (artists), exceeding 250,000 copies for foreign artist's album on its first week, it became a great achievement because it has been 6 years and 4 months since the record of KARA's 'SUPERGIRL' (released Nov 2011, first week sales: 275,000 copies) on 111205.

BTS thanked the fans and said, "Our 3rd album 'FACE YOURSELF' ranked number 1 in Oricon Weekly Albums Chart. The update on foreign hip-hop artists first place record, we are happy to let ARMY know about these good news before the Japan fan meeting. Thank you very much. [Oricon] BTS, First appearance on Music Station!! To throw kisses on live broadcast 171218

Korean male seven-member hip-hop group, BTS (Boudan Shounendan) will appear for the first time on TV Asahi's live broadcast of 'Music Station Super Live' on the 22nd (7:00~11:10PM). It's also their first time to perform in a program which is on Japan's prime time broadcast. They will perform 'DNA Japanese version' on live broadcast. The performance's points are 'energy' and 'dance in perfect order.' Furthermore, member JIN also gave a 'pledge' saying "to everyone who is watching us, the 7 members will blow kisses!" The members' enthusiasm summarized in comments also arrived.

■BTS's comment We've never thought of appearing even in our dreams on 'Music Station'; which we've always heard from stories, so we really feel honored that our appearance has been decided. [Billboard JAPAN] Big break soon?! BTS breakthrough secret 【Chart insight of insight】 171216

This week's 'JAPAN HOT 100' was controlled by BTS (Boudan Shounendan). With their irresistible force, they are Korea's boy group whose popularity is also soaring in Japan. The single 'MIC Drop' gained points and became first place (chart 1). Moreover, it's not only this 'MIC Drop', but 'DNA' ranked 10th place, 'Crystal Snow at 19th place, it is surprising that all 3 songs included in the single are in the best 20.  

They made their debut in 2013, the following year also landed in Japan, and since this year their popularity soared (in areas) other than Asia such as UK, US and so on. Fascinated with their genuine rap and intense dance, they made an achievement of also charting in Billboard US. They have pretty much expanded worldwide. If there is any opportunity, they will break through in the entire world.

This time's 'MIC Drop' is a song which was already released from the album 'LOVE YOURSELF 承 Her' released September this year only in Korea and in Japan, as mentioned above, released as a single with three songs. It already recorded explosive sales of approximately 450,000 copies in its first week. Also, if you look at the chart's graph, certainly their sales is overwhelming, but you'll notice that they are using SNS well. It's good to compare the number of Twitter count (light blue graph) with radio airplay count (green graph). Fans are excited in SNS, on the other hand there's not much on radio requests yet. It doesn't mean that their songs will never be played on the radio, this part too will certainly progress depending on future promotion.

Well, we don't know yet as to how far it will remain on the chart, but we can expect reasonable long sales. That fact is in reference to their previous single 'Chi, Ase, Namida' chart performance (chart 2). Video play count (red graph) and radio airplay count (green graph) dropped immediately, while twitter index kept a high rank for a long time (light blue graph). We wonder in what way will 'MIC Drop' show its movement from now on and if it will become a song with long sales, we look forward to it.

BTS's 'MIC Drop' is a single which sold 453,721 copies. It is 1st in sales, 2nd in look up, 65th in downloads, 4th in Twitter, 24th in mv views. It leads 'JAPAN HOT 100' with a big difference in physical sales from below the 2nd placer. NGT48's second single 'Sekai wa Doko Made Aozora na no ka?' is a single which sold 202,323 copies. It is 2nd in sales, 6th in look up, 45th in downloads, 9th in Twitter, 19th in radio airplay, it also increased in its physical sales, but wasn't able to match up with BTS, thus, ranked 2nd over-all. BTS's surge is great that in the Top 20 we have 'MIC Drop' (over-all 1st), 'DNA' (over-all 10th), 'Crystal Snow' (over-all 19th), all 3 songs accomplished brilliant achievements. 'DNA' and 'Crystal Snow' didn't have singles sales points, but were heaped up with download, streaming, Twitter, mv views' digital domain points. Similarly with their break in the US, they became [artists] being greatly noticed here in Japan too. Utada Hikaru's 'Anata' is in its first entry this week. 1st in downloads, 15th in radio airplay, 19th in Twitter, 59th in mv views. Although the points are raised by each indicator, with the download points by far, it became 3rd over-all. Furthermore, the one who prevented BTS's Twitter top position was the long awaited first step restart, TVXQ's 'Reboot.' Approximately by Twitter points it ranked 18th which is its first entry as before its release on 12/20, the anticipation of the core fans has also quickly risen up. Korean male seven-member with average age of 22.6 hip-hop group BTS's Japan 8th single 'MIC Drop/DNA/Crystal Snow' (released on the 6th) sold 365,000 copies in its first week and is at number 1 in Oricon's 12/18 Weekly Single Ranking, their 2nd consecutive and third in total.

The previous single's highest first week record was their previous work 'Chi, Ase, Namida' (released in May) which marked 239,000 copies (265,000 accumulated). They have recorded 126,000 increase with this work [M/D/C], exceeding 100,000 copies in their previous work's accumulated sales in its first week and foreign artist's first single to surpass 300,000 copies in singles first week sales.

BTS is a seven-member group with RM (23), JIN (25), SUGA (24), J-HOPE (23), JIMIN (21), V (21), and JUNGKOOK (20).
