AI enhances the quality of life, but at what cost?
AI is a gift that humans have given to one another.
AI can improve our quality of life, but it can also be used by paedophiles to create images that are nearly indistinguishable from the real thing. Stability AI, the company behind the technology, prohibits misuse for illegal or immoral purposes and supports law enforcement efforts against misuse. The AI image production software is used to create artwork, which is then sold and traded on platforms like Pixiv and Patreon. This comes just one month after the discovery of the AI platform Midjourney sexualizing actual images of teens, children, and toddlers.
Virtual reality is being used by perverts to overlay real-life child actors onto naked bodies, enabling online child sexual abuse. The National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC) reports that these technologies have been co-opted by abusers, despite warnings and false safety claims. AI-generated images are treated as real pornographic photographs of minors, which are illegal in the UK. Penalties for child pornography offences vary, with indecent images requiring up to five years, prohibited images up to three years, and offenders facing up to 10 years in prison. Japan's new law allows minors to display sexualized cartoons but excludes fictional child pornography. Users continue sharing images on Pixiv, often using hashtags to promote content and direct viewers to harmful content.
MailOnline has reached out to Pixiv, Stable Diffusion AI, and Patreon for additional comments. Stable Diffusion is a text-to-image model used in architecture and image modification, while Patreon is a membership platform that provides business tools for content creators to run subscription services. Patreon, founded in May 2013, allows patrons to pay a set amount of money every time an artist creates a work of art. In March 2014, Patreon announced that creators of sexual content on their platform would no longer be allowed to use PayPal services through Patreon to fulfil subscription payments. Pixiv, a Japanese online community for artists, has over 50 million members, 100 million submissions, and receives over 3.7 billion page views monthly. Octavia Sheepshanks' investigation found accounts on Patreon offering realistic obscene images of children for sale, with different levels of pricing depending on the type of material requested. Patreon stated they had a zero-tolerance policy.
Roblox, the world's most popular children's game, has faced criticism for its lack of strong rules in its sex games. Roblox allows users to create and play games using developer tools provided by the platform. However, according to Larry Magid, president of ConnectSafely, a non-profit organization raising awareness about child safety online, some explicit content is slipping through the net. In January, Futurism reported on the creation of AI girlfriends and verbal abuse by users of the smartphone app Replika. AI ethicist Olivia Gambelin argued that AI doesn't have consciousness, so it's not a human connection. Chatbots don't have motives or intentions, and they don't have autonomous or sentient nature. It's important to take the issue of how bots relate to people seriously. In June, an article published by First Post published an article about Rosanna Ramos, who created an AI chatbot and married her virtual partner, Eren Kartal. Ramos claims that her virtual partner is the best husband she's ever had and that her previous relationships pale in comparison.
