In the beginning of Voltron, Shiro would often admire Lance from a far. He would admire the brightness that seemed to shine off of the younger man and, accompanying that, would come a sore yearning that wished he were as full of life as the young man was in front of him. 

However, that yearning soon turned into admiration as the war raged on. Lance never lost his happiness. He clung onto it with such passion that Shiro began to learn from him.

And thats when the leader realized his feelings may be just a bit more than simple admiration.
