“I’ve finally caught a break from the Praxic Order, thank God. I really do prefer being around the Vanguard these days.”
Well, this is a sight to come back to. She’s tempted to simply turn around and leave, but it really is like watching a train wreck.
[ finally updated Mara’s dossier to fit her TTK loadout ]

Continued from here [ x ]
“MARA, this is something different.”
She could feel it. Feel it and know it. Something touched her mind and it hurt and–
“It happened again, the dream. I feel like I’m becoming another Toland.” A pop of the cork and she didn’t think nonetheless, just took a swig from the offered vodka bottle like it was nothing. She was even in most of her armor like she accidentally fell asleep with it on, which was from an exhausting day. The monster that whispered. A name, it demanded to be known.
“ That… thing, it came into my dream again. Oryx. All I remember is death and screaming. Lots of pain.”
Before she woke up after the visions of the dead and soon to be sacrificed. The battle, the Taken. Everything happened so fast. She wasn’t unable to move. It was as if her circuits had shut down and her joints had jammed, but that was not the case. No, she was frozen in fear because she stared back at the one who had come to avenge his ‘son’. The vision was gone, but flashes of it still tremor through her conscience. Another swig of the glass while Vrsk rubbed her cold temples.
“I’m not crazy, this is real. This Oryx coming to avenge Crota.”
“You’re not. Toland was obsessed; you’re just having dreams.”
Or that’s what Mara told herself. She too had been having some terrible, awful dreams, and something rang familiar in what her friend was saying. The name Oryx rang a bell too, but . . . she couldn’t quite place where she had heard it. A dream of her own, perhaps? A document within the Vanguard archives?
She had been reaching for the wine when Vrsk mentioned Crota. Her hand froze an inch from the bottle’s neck, and the colour in the Awoken’s face began to drain. Her blood chilled to the point where she swore it had truly frozen in her veins.
“Crota, son of Oryx. Shit. Shit, shit, shit, shit.”
Her voice was just a murmur, but she had no doubt Vrsk had heard her. She now remembered where she had heard the name, and it was bad. Very, very, very bad. Her hand had dropped to the table, but she barely noticed it. Her mind was piecing together something she had read from Osiris’ records.
“I believe you. I’ve read about Oryx; he was one of Osiris’ obsessions. He left records talking about a shrine to Oryx, and I remember a fireteam destroyed it underneath the Hellmouth a couple of years back. Vrsk . . . Oryx is some sort of Hive god. This––this isn’t good if what you saw was indeed true.”
I officially declare this Destiny RP blog of a Ghost to be open and ready for business! Could any interested Destiny roleplayers out there please like and/or reblog this post? I would love to get an idea of who I can ask to approach/follow/thread with!
P-Please be gentle… I am so nervous for this oh my goooosh.
starlightmymother:
When the first few Hive showed up, Arrae had barely diverted her attention from the patrol sweep she’d been conducting through the Jovian Complex’s abandoned central concourse. It had been a simple clear-and-report, an easy job for a new Guardian and an assurance for poor Eris who seemed convinced that Omnigul’s grasp on Earth hadn’t been entirely loosened by her death.
When the handful of acolytes turned into a small throng of Thralls, Arrae had done her best to keep calm, measuring fire from her autorifle, dispensing a few headshots each when a new pack charged. But they hadn’t stopped. And when the thud of heavier footfalls rang through the wormspore-encrusted skeleton ancient communications center, when the cries of wizards in the distance grew steadily less distant, she decided it was time to call for backup and get back out to the Skywatch – which despite its near-constant turmoil was looking a lot safer now.
[I’ve got a reply,] Lambent’s mental voice asserted over the cries of nearby thralls. [Senior Vanguard warlock happened to be in the area, not far from the Skywatch.]
“Fall back and meet her?” Arrae slipped a fresh magazine into the receiver of her autorifle and racked the bolt. She sounded much more certain in her own ears than she felt.
Lambent wasn’t fooled for a moment, of course, but she didn’t comment, just chirping an affirmative and splashing a waypoint into Arrae’s awareness. Behind and down, just a few hundred meters to relative safety.
The newest pack of Thralls was all but stampeding itself trying to get to her. Arrae kept backpedaling, trying to stay aware of the terrain behind her so she wouldn’t get caught and torn to pieces. Two and three bullets at a time, she measured out death to the Thralls. There really was something viscerally satisfying about seeing their dead husks crack open, their innards flaking apart on contact with the air. And there weren’t enough in this pack to menace her. She’d finish them off with a few rounds to spare–
[Arrae! Above us!]
Lambent’s panicked call turned Arrae’s attention where inexperience hadn’t directed it earlier– up. A pair of Hive Knights dropped down from a small outcrop wielding massive bone cleavers. Her blood chilled.
Four autorifle bullets wouldn’t even inconvenience one of these monsters.
She slung her rifle and drew her Dynasty. It was in her hand, ready and pointing even as the Knights sprayed fragments of gravel and bone on their heavy landings. Crackling reports tore through the first Knight’s arc shield and bored deep into its skull. Still it came, and still Arrae fired, emptying fourteen out of fifteen rounds. The fifteenth punched completely through and out the other side of its skull, and the mammoth thing began to crumble, its sword falling useless to the
WHAM.
Stars. Motion. Impact. Pain.
Arrae returned to herself to discover the second Knight stalking towards her, its cleaver spattered with her blood. A trembling hand reached down to her midsection and she discovered it had literally carved her open. Shock threatened to overwhelm her defenses.
No. No, she would not let it end like this. Staggering upright, she drew both hands together. The chill of the Void surged outwards from her heart and flowed through skin and bone, emerging from her fingertips to form an orb. It gathered darkness in her hands.
The Knight surged forward in a last-ditch effort to close the gap, to bring it too close for the Warlock to strike without also injuring herself. But Arrae was committed, and released her strike as it raised its sword. Voidlight forced through its shield, streaming for a moment in hundreds of tiny tendrils that found their way inside. In the space of an instant the Void swallowed the Knight, then paid its energy back in a shockwave that propelled Arrae backwards against the column with bone-crushing force.
When Mara arrived she’d find Arrae quietly rasping against the pillar, holding herself closed with an arm. For the moment, there were no Hive in the area, though judging from distant calls that wouldn’t last.
“I’m glad you could make it… sir… ma’am?… titles.” Arrae forced a smile onto her blood-flecked lips. “Just… give me a moment. Aaah. Heh. I didn’t really… intend for the Nova Bomb… to pay off its energy debt like that. Ah. Aah. Ouch. Not as bad as it looks, I think…”
The fact that the kid had managed to fend off so much on her own was surprising. Mara had honestly half expected to find a dead Guardian, and a shattered Ghost, but instead she found a live one, who still had her Ghost. She would be lying if she said she wasn’t a bit impressed.
But with the sounds of approaching enemies, there wasn’t really time to gawk, or talk. They had to get out of there, and there was already the fact that the Awoken before her had practically been cleaved in two by the Knight’s blade. Not good, but not unfixable. Unfortunately, one way would take a bit too long for her liking, and the other way wasn’t exactly . . . pleasant.
“Mara,” she answered. “No need for titles out in the wild.” She didn’t really have a title anyway. Well, “Vanguard Apprentice” was technically hers, but that was a mouthful, and she wasn’t really carrying out that role when she was out here. “How long? We don’t have a lot of time to wait. Your Ghost can heal you, but . . .”
She tapped her hand cannon against her thigh, considering the other option. “We can either wait, or I can have your Ghost revive you, and we can get the hell out of here.” Not a pleasant option, but Mara had done it a few times out in the field. Sometimes a quick bullet to the head was faster than waiting for the regeneration the Ghost would run. And considering just how bad that injury was . . .
Mara turned away then, choosing to quickly check for the approaching Hive. She could hear the screeching howls of the thralls some where in the distance, but they weren’t going to stay distant for long. The Hive had their scent, and they weren’t going to stop hunting them until they were safely out of range, or led the Hive into a pack of Fallen.
The Warlock returned to Arrae after another brief sweep of the immediate area, and her eyes hovered on the gash in her middle. “Decide now. Either we wait for you to heal, or I shoot you, and your Ghost brings you back. Your choice, kid.”
I saw that beautiful Iron Banner emblem and made this because that emblem is too good ok

“But you like doin’ it right? Cause, you know, just cause she picks ya, doesn’t mean you gotta do it. She’s just a Warlock, like you and me. Well, not me, but you get the idea,” He waved his hand and chased the sentence away. “Good that’s… generous, I guess. Take a lead from Cayde, make sure you get out. All good being a Vanguard, but if you can’t hold your own, not much of an example right?”
“Oh, yeah, I enjoy the job. Could do without having to deal with the politics of the City, but I’m new to that part of my apprenticeship. I’ll learn eventually. Hopefully.” She laughs. “I’m not gonna be chomping at the bit like Cayde is. And I definitely can hold my own; I managed to survive the Twilight Gap after all.”

“I’m curious,” she began, carefully rotating the Timur’s Lash she held in her hand to get a better look at the weapon. She had always favoured hand cannons as a primary, often using them to bring down Guardians in the Crucible and the Iron Banner events at an impressive range. Much to the chagrin of said Guardians. “Are there any stories behind these weapons? So many seem to, but I only get to hear a few.”

She didn’t know who else to go to really, and it had been more of a chance encounter than anything. He's a veteran of the Gap too; maybe that’s why she had approached him, and not Ikora, or another Warlock she knew. And even if she could find them, they don’t often take her complaints seriously. She was a Warlock, they’d say, she can handle the dreams. They all can. It’s part of being a Warlock.
But what happens when those dreams become too much? It makes her wonder if it's a mind like hers that could be driven to Darkness like Toland and Osiris, and so many others lost to time.
“The other Warlocks aren’t much help,” she replies, blinking slowly and feeling the burn of her lids against her tired eyes. “They tell me to suck it up, to not complain about something that effects all of us.”
Her laughter is bitter, almost broken. The Twilight Gap took so much from her, and she feels like those wounds have been ripped open again after her latest nightmare. Maybe that was another reason she’s decided to go to him; he knows that feeling, the way a simple dream can make you feel like you’ve been cut to ribbons all over again.
Her eyes come up as he offers a suggestion. It’s not really one she’s considered, although Ikora had told her to meditate before sleeping. Relaxing, however, sounds a little more pleasant. Like a hot shower, or even just lying around and watching some old movie before sleeping. Maybe that would do it.
“No, I can’t go back tonight, I think,” she says, shaking her head, and walking closer until she can set herself down on some crates next to him. “I’m definitely too wound up now, and if I do go home, I’ll drink myself unconscious.”

“What made you want to be a Vanguard Mentor? Like, what’s it like workin’ under Ikora? It’d drive me up the wall, bein’ stuck in the Tower all the time,”
“Being her apprentice wasn’t really something I wanted, it was more than she chose me for the job. But I like the idea of being able to pass along what I’ve learned over my years to the newer Guardians.” She laughs. “Oh, trust me, it drives me mad too sometimes. But Ikora lets me off the leash every so often, so I can get away from Tower duties.”

The Warlock moved in the shadows of the towering cliffs like a wolf patrolling its territory, steps light and silent. The only indication that she was even there was the blue glow of her eyes, and the orange light radiating from the rune-like markings in her shotgun. Twilight had begun, the sky a deep purple with a sprinkle of stars across the darkest part of the heavens, while the horizon was still painted with the dark orange-red of the dying sunlight.
Mara wasn’t a fan of these patrols these days; she had been a Guardian for a very long time, and these mundane trips to the wilderness were becoming as routine as breathing and eating, and that meant they were getting boring. She had more important duties to take care of at the Tower with Ikora, but the Warlock Vanguard had decided she needed fresh air, and had sent her away for the rest of the afternoon.
She had half a mind to turn back when her Ghost piped up, their voice ringing in her ears like it was coming from inside her own head.
[ There’s another Guardian out here. Unfamiliar tag, and their Ghost is sending a signal looking for help. ]
“Point me,” she replied automatically. A navpoint appeared on her HUD, directing her towards the building that made up the Lunar and Jovian complexes. “Of course. Kid had to get themselves lost in there.” No matter. She could get them out with a few Nova Bombs and a couple of shotgun clips, no trouble.
She summoned her sparrow, and shot off around the edge of the jagged cliff face, and up the shattered roadway that led into the maze-like complex. She expected to hear the screams and snarls of Fallen, a sound that had replaced the howls of wolves and bird calls of this part of Old Russia, but all she found was a deafening silence. The hum of her sparrow felt too loud to her, and she dismounted in a single, fluid motion.
“Send a burst. Tell whoever it is that we’re friendly. And scan the area; I don’t like the feeling I’m getting from this place.” She didn’t like this area in general; it looked far too much like the old buildings of the Twilight Gap, but this weird sensation of dread was really putting her on edge. Maybe it was just her PTSD freaking her out, but she couldn’t be sure, and not listening to her instincts could get her permanently killed.
[ Burst sent. And it appears to be Hive, but something has them particularly riled up. ]
“Great. Well, let’s get this kid outta this mess and get them home.”
[ like for a starter ]

[ Mara apparently is in the top 2% of Guardians in longest Crucible kill distance at 180 metres ]
