A Sunny Afternoon | [Penny + Lilo]

Lilo frowned when the girl rejected her snow cone, but she understood. Just looking at the girl was making Lilo too sad to eat it.

Lilo raised an eyebrow as the girl sobbed about her mom getting the balloon and ‘forgetting another year’ She didn’t understand any of it. Why did her mom have to get the balloon? Why this balloon? Lilo looked at it again, but this time she noticed a piece of paper attached. “A letter?” she mumbled. Then she remembered what day it was. “A card! Is that a mother’s day card?”

Now it made sense. This thing was obviously very important, but it was too high to reach. Lilo thought for a moment until she came up with a fantastic idea. She reached into her bag and pulled out Scrump, who was still wearing the cape Lilo had made her.

“This is Scrump!” Lilo chirped, showing the doll off to the girl. “Her head’s really big because an alien spider laid eggs in her ears. The doctors said she only had a few day to live, but instead, she got super powers! She’s got a super jump, so she can help us. Watch!”

Lilo prepared to pitch the green doll at the balloon to knock it down. She tried to aim perfectly, then threw Scrump with all her strength. Scrump hit the balloon, but didn’t knock it down, instead getting stuck in the tree herself.

“AAAAAAAAAH!” Lilo screamed, pulling her hair at the roots. “This is terrible! She doesn’t have her parachute! What are we gonna do??”

Penny’s eyes widened in alarm, no only at the prospect of radio-active super bugs and ear-laying, but at the fact that yes, it had briefly flew, and then gotten stuck- And now this girl was screaming next to her and Penny’s hands flew to her ears. She yelped and stumbled back in surprise, landing hard on her behind.

“H-hey!” She tried to shout of Lilo’s shouting, “It’s okay! She looks, uh-” Penny wrinkled her brow, “Bouncy?”

Standing up and rubbing her hip, she frowned as she turned to the tree. How was she gonna get her balloon back, and -- Scrump? Scratching her head, she shook her hair from her eyes and looked at the tree, then the doll, then the balloon again. If they just... Penny’s concern widened into a grin, “Wait! Wait, I’ve got it- We could-- We could climb! Uhm. You can climb okay, right?”

Penny paused, then stuck out her hand awkwardly, “I’m Penny. That Balloon’s for my mom. I’m sorry your doll got stuck up there, uhm.” She chewed her lip, and added, “I like her bow.”

On a Distant Star || Peter Pan & Penny

Perhaps another star, and perhaps another night..

Peter was just getting ready to land for the night. It had been yet another full day of hunting for treasure, playing follow the leader, swimming, and adventuring for all. He was going to get tucked away in his bed and doze off into a deep sleep. His shadow, however, had other plans. Just as Peter was flying over the entrance to The Lost Boys’ clubhouse, Peter felt something tugging at his feet. Curious, he turned and saw his shadow flying in the opposite direction. Peter did a summersault and flew in towards it. “Hey! Get back here!” he called.  Unfortunately, the shadow wasn’t much for obedience. It flew on even harder, headed right for the second star to the right.  “Where do you think you’re going?!” Peter shouted as he caught up to the shadow. Peter latched on just in time for them to reach the star. Through the portal they went, and found themselves on the opposite side.  There were lights everywhere. Great, tall buildings lined the streets and there was music being played by a man on the sidewalk. After looking around at his environment, Peter whispered to the shadow.  “Come on! Now let’s go home!” Much to his surprise, the shadow was gone. Peter balled his hand into a fist and punched their air. He looked to the North and saw his shadow, flying in between buildings. Peter kicked off and followed closely behind, careful not to make a sound.  At last, they arrived to the unknown destination. Pan’s shadow cracked the window open and sunk in, camouflaging himself with the darkness of the wood floors. Peter looked in, pressing his nose against the glass. He saw no signs of anyone awake; although he did notice there were rows of beds, each occupied by a sleeping child.  The room looked quiet enough for Peter to sneak in, grab his shadow, and fly back to Neverland. Peter pushed the window open and hopped up onto the windowsill. He stood, backlit by the moon behind him, and looked for his shadow.

Penny had turned her back to the wall, blanket drawn up to her chin. She'd dozed off after counting sheep, but a nightmare had woken her and for several minutes she'd been counting breaths while staring at the far wall, wondering where Rufus had gotten too. He was probably off downstairs by the fire still, lazy old thing! She made herself a reminder to scold him, and felt a little better for it.

Moments passed, when an odd noise reached her; Penny froze for a moment and her breath hitched. The window creaked open behind her, but no one stirred- Miss Duffy hadn't come upstairs, she wondered, for she'd have noticed the woman. Miss Duffy was not particularly quiet, especially at night, and often woke children just getting a glass of water--

But this noise was the sort of meant-to-be-quiet that the older children did when they didn't wish to be caught sneaking out or sneaking sweets into bed. The quiet sort of noise that was supposed to draw attention elsewhere, but was not very good at it.

Something moved at the foot of her bed and Penny stifled, just barely, the urge to scream and pull her feet back. What if it that attracted whatever it had been? What if it was a monster, or an ogre, or anything bad just come to nip at her toes?!

Woe began to fill her, and Penny resolved this-- If she just rolled over to the window, it wouldn't mind her one bit! She'd have the moon and all it's light to protect her--

Penny rolled over, and there was the moon. There was also, someone right in front of it.

She sat up with a quiet yelp, and threw the nearest object at hand at the person, and Teddy went flying quite soundly as she scrambled to her feet, and demanded in her most stern whisper,

"Who are you?!"

“I’ve never seen a Penny-Bird before,” The bird cocked it’s head before fluffing her feathers proudly, and seemed to soften just a bit at the compliment. “Why, thank you!”

“We’re looking for our lost friend,” Bert explained to the bird, hoping maybe she could advise them, “Per'aps you’ve seen ‘im? He’s short an’ brown an’ of the teddy-bear persuasion.”

“There’s been no bears in here, thank goodness! Smelly, awful brutes, bears.” The bird preened a wing before taking a bit of pity on the poor Penny-bird. “You could try The Place where Lost Things are Found!”

“The lost and found? Oh, yes, of course!” Bert beamed brightly. “Woul’ make sense, wouldn’ it? Where’s that at, then?”

“Just beyond the Unicorn Paddock, but I’d be wary if I were you.”

Penny’s face split into a grin, her eyes wide and hands flying to her face. Her words were a rushed whisper as she stumbled out from behind Bert, clinging to the tail of his coat in awe,

“Unicorns?! REALLY?!”

She turned to Bert, wide-eyed and snatched at his hands, “Come on, come on! We have to see!” For an instant, her bear had been forgotten, as had her manners- She remembered in a quick flurry though, and turned back around to offer a smart curtsey to the birds,

“Thank you, thank you! We haveta’ go find Teddy now! Oh, goodbye, goodbye!”

A Sunny Afternoon | [Open]

“Thanks!” Lilo said as she happily took her lemon-lime snow cone from the vendor. The first snow cone of the summer always tasted the best! Lilo eagerly ate a spoonful of the fruity ice and closed her eyes as it melted in her mouth. Perfection.

Someone else, a girl around her age, didn’t seem to be having such a good time. She was a shaking, sobbing mess. Lilo couldn’t be happy while looking at someone so sad. Suddenly, her snow cone didn’t look so appetizing.

She approached the girl cautiously. Maybe she was lost or something. Lilo looked down at her slowly melting snow cone and sighed. “Hey,” she said, “you want this? It’s really good. Lemon lime.” She held out the cup to the girl. “You look like you need it more than I do.”

Lilo noticed that the girl was looking up at something. She followed her gaze and saw a balloon stuck in the branches of a tall tree. “Is that all it is? You lost your balloon? You can just get a new one, right?”

Penny jerked away for a moment, but blinked through her tears and rubbed her eyes on her forearm nervously. She glanced at the sno-cone and shook her head, taking a moment to find words against all the calamity in her head:

"No- No- I can't, it's for-"

She swallowed and had to wipe her eyes again, voice small as she glanced up again to reassure herself that it was still there, "It's for my mom. She has to get it. I have to make sure it's perfect a-and she has to get this one-"

She shut her eyes tight and balled her fists, insistent:

"It's special. She has to get that one."

The balloon bobbed slightly in the breeze, it's thread tangling with the card on a lower branch. The bright pink plastic squeaked slightly, and Penny's eyes snapped open as she moved past Lilo to the base of the tree, stretching helplessly-- It was still out of reach.   Penny’s palms closed on small fists and she bought them to her forehead, pressing hard."I'm really sorry, I just- She has to get it. If she doesn't get it it means I-I forgot a-another year, a-and if I forget another year…"Her words were falling apart into slow hiccups, and she swallowed hard, "I-If I forget another year, no one'll find me an' I'll be stuck f-forever."

A Sunny Afternoon | [Open]

[Slight panic warning below cut.]

Penny was dressed in her best, which, if she was being very, very honest, wasn’t much better than her usual: A little purple jumper and a yellow button up with fraying sleeves was over her usual lilac leggings and mary-janes. Miss Duffy had dug the outfit out special, and even let her wear her easter hat to walk down the park and do as she did every mother's day.

One balloon, wound tight around her palm and tied, was to be released skyward with the same note she'd written for as long as she could remember, for as long as Miss Duffy had carefully printed it, or as of this year, helped her to print in looping, bold letters:

"Dear Mama,

I miss you, and I hope you're someplace better.

I love you still.

Penny."

Penny arrived at the park at half-past eleven, and the day was bright and warm. It was better than last year, when she'd been--

The thought slammed shut like an iron gate. She would not dwell on where she had been that last year. Her hand tightened around the string and she took a deep, shaking breath.

She'd missed a year. She'd missed doing it, and that meant maybe her mother had moved even further away, gone off somewhere else, and would have a harder time finding this one--

Penny found herself sitting on a bench and looking up at the balloon miserably. What if that were true?

What if she never got it, or she had left so far away that balloons didn't reach, or she hadn't put enough on the card, or if- Or if--

Penny's hands were shaking now and her breath was hard to catch and she kept having to swallow. Everything felt larger around her and she felt pressed in, made smaller and smaller by each turn of laughter in the park or each murmur of wind, pulling the string and the balloon further and further away--

She had to fix the letter, at least. It was clear it wasn't good enough, it wasn't smart enough or pretty enough--

Penny fumbled with the string and reached up to snag the letter, and in her haste the balloon escaped her palm.

There was a moment of horror, before she cried out, "No! Wait! Come back, please--"

But the wind had picked up and the wind had changed, and the balloon was out of reach.

On a Distant Star || Peter & Penny

The window ledge was faintly dusty, with slight paths from trailed sleeves and Rufus' paw prints long faded, and two semi-circles from where Penny's elbows rested as her breath fogged against the window. "Hullo, wishing star." Her voice barely carried across the soft wooden floor, and against the sound of faint snores behind piled quilts it was only a passing noise, lost to the crevices and cold cracks of air from the still, winter night beyond the panes. Nevertheless, her eyes were up and her hands clasped, almost reverent -- Not quite a prayer. Prayers were deeply serious and she didn't like to think she'd waste them, but a wish: "Can you hear me? I hope you can." Her fingers wound and twined against one another as she glanced down the empty street through the flurry of snow and breathed, "I wish..."

Her eyes screwed shut, and the star twinkled bright. Distantly, smoke curled from chimneys and streetlights dimmed in the haze-- A much closer set of stars obscuring the ones held in the great blue. But she knew where to look; she always knew.

Rufus gave a soft snore on the bed behind her, but his noises didn't distract her wishing. She was intent, as she was every evening and the words came out, familiar and soft;

"I wish I had a friend. Maybe someone-- Someone like me. Someone.." She trailed off and shrugged, her eyes opening faintly as she searched the skies for a moment before finding the second star and relaxing faintly:

"Well, you know."

Her hands unfolded and she pushed herself back, arms wrapping around one another as she shuddered. Her window had never been quite able to close all the way, and the draft was noticeable as she stood without her slippers.  She wished a lot; that was the way things were. You don't have much, so you're glad for what you have but-- Well, wishing never hurt anyone.

Carefully, Penny climbed up to her bed, wary of disturbing Rufus, and reached to cradle Teddy close. He and Rufus were important but-- Well, someone to speak too who'd speak back, someone other people might understand, she felt, might do her a world of good.

With that, she sighed and moved the blankets back, crawling into bed.

Deep In the Dark || {Dungeons of Maleficent's Castle} {DRP}

Kristoff cocked his head to the side and a concerned expression came across his face. As much as he didn’t want to believe Penny arrived at the party through a closet door with coats, he didn’t have much choice but to trust her. 

"Okay. Let’s….let’s see." Kristoff peaked his head around the corner toward the front door to the castle and saw a door that was cracked open, revealing a very elegant coat next to one that looked like it had been through a rough life. This closet is as good as any, I guess! 

Kristoff motioned for Penny to follow him and he stealthily made his way toward the door. He peered down to the little girl and heavily considered just sneaking her out the door and into his sled, but he shook his head as he made up his mind that it wouldn’t be a good decision. Afterall, Kristoff could hardly take care of himself. How could he ever be a good father? He placed both hands on Penny’s shoulders. "This is the plan. You’re gonna go in the closet and whatever magic brought you here will take you back home, okay? And I’ll leave out that door right there and go back to where I live. You might be scared, but it’ll work. Trust me. It always works. Oh, and one more thing. The next chance you get to go somewhere, come to the Kingdom of Arendelle, okay? That’s where I live and I know of some people who would love to meet the brace girl who helped escape from a dungeon." 

He crouched down and wrapped his arms entirely around Penny and squeezed tightly. “Be strong, Penny. There’s somebody out there who is going to be the perfect family for you. I promise.” He squeeze once more and stood up, motioning her toward the closet door.

Penny looked back to Kristoff quizzically and bought her arms closer to herself; she'd have to leave Bert's things behind, and they were.. Comforting, like an old blanket or her friend Teddy.

As the thought, she felt a pang; he was back at home, all alone in the dark on the bed! What if Rufus wasn't even there? She had to get back-- She had too. She couldn't leave him alone, he hated being alone…

Kristoff's words met her with a curt nod, and she murmured,

"Okay."

She looked up at him and her brow furrowed,

"But I've never heard of Arendelle-- How'm I gonna…?"

She chewed on her lip, but then nodded. She smiled quietly and slowly as the thoughts trickled into place-- Maybe he could find her, and they could all go find Arendelle together. Slowly, she nodded again,

"Okay, okay. But if I don't find you, you gotta come get me, okay?"

She looked serious, and said the address very slowly,

"I'm at Sunnyside Orphanage. Sunn-y Si-de. Orphanage. On Sixth street in New York City! I can send you a letter if you forget."

Hope gleamed in her eyes, and she added quickly, "But I know you won't!"

And then she was hugging him tightly and saying as many goodbyes as she could before she hurried back into the rows of furs and coats-

Carefully, she hung up Bert's hat and jacket. He'd find them! She knew he would. Even if he was busy with those strange people, and that stern lady who danced oh-so-well--

The door shut behind her and she caught a last glimpse of Kristoff's face as she turned into the furs hung between cloaks and throws, calling,

"Thank you, Kristoff! I'll miss you!"

She shut her eyes and counted to three, parting the fabric and furs as she wandered into the depths of the closet--

And it seemed only like a breath later she was tangled in the blankets at Sunnyside once more, heart fluttering as she managed her way out.

Had it been some dream? A strange sort of test? How would she ever know?!

The name called to her like a distant beacon, and as she scrambled out of the dark to see the ceiling and rafters of the familiar, drafty room, her bear and her dozing friend Rufus waiting, she could hear the word like far-off-bells, calling with all the glimmer and magic of the Northern lights;

Arendelle.

She had a friend in Arendelle.

A Little Princess Tea Party || Penny and Prince Hans

Hans gave a warm smile — one of his most charming — as the little girl questioned the fanciness of his lat name. 

"Yes, it’s real. They nearly made me an admiral, you know. I would’ve been Admiral Westergard, if I’d stayed in the navy. Now that would have been really fancy.” 

Having been kindly served some ‘tea’ (which appeared to simply be lemonade, but he was fond of lemon flavored everything, and so he was reasonably pleased by this), Hans took up the small plastic tea cup with the chip in the rim and gave it a sip. After a thoughtful frown, he gave Penny a princely nod and raised his glass to her. 

"I didn’t realize Viking Queens had such a knack for tea brewing. And an artist, too? Worthy of a spot on the mantle, even! And here I thought all Vikings did was pillage and plunder! I’ll definitely have a look when we get back to Morningside!" 

Setting his cup down politely, waiting for his hostess to drink before taking any more, Hans could feel his smile fall.

Sitting forward a bit seriously, Hans looked aside at the little girl in the Viking helmet. 

"…I hear you’ve been a big help to Bert, while he’s been here," Hans said, smiling a bit sadly despite his best efforts. "He’s shown me around Morningside before, and I helped fix up the tire swing again once, but I’m really going to need your help, Miss Penny. I know Bert walks you guys to the bus stop, and fixes things that are broken, and I’ve seen him take you on museum trips — but I’ve got a lot of names to learn, and new jobs to do, and I don’t want to forget anything. I think I’m going to need a… coach, of sorts. Could you do that for me, Miss Penny?"

"I have no idea what an admiral is," Penny quipped, busying herself with doodling on the tablecloth. Her tongue was out and she hummed to herself, a chaotic beat with little tune and too many notes as her hat slipped over her eyes. She glanced back and placed her tongue back, looking pleased,

"We sure do! We can do anything, thank-you-very-much. Once, I found a diamond-" And there she stopped suddenly and short with a frown. She ended hastily;

"But it's gone now," as though it weren't of any importance, but of course it was! She'd almost told him the thing, the thing she didn't tell anyone, the thing she wasn't supposed to talk about, the thing that kept making people think she was more important than she was and the thing that kept making her come back and the thing that had Medusa-

The crayon in her hand snapped in half. She blinked.

Hans had said something about Bert. Bert was important. What did he say? Helping Bert? Her head swam and she refocused, coming in only at the tail end. He needed a what? A coach?

The thoughts began to roll forward. If she helped him, maybe he wouldn't ask any hard questions. If she helped him, he wouldn't ask about the diamond. He'd forget all about it, because there WAS a lot to know at Sunnyside! And much more to do, besides.

That settled it. She reached forward and offered her hand (after wiping it on her dress) and looked him square in the eye;

"If you think you can, I think I can help you! But we gotta start big," so you don't ask, "so we gotta meet everybody."

Deep In the Dark || {Dungeons of Maleficent's Castle} {DRP}

Kristoff softly ran across the dim hallway shortly before the goon came and left. He could very clearly see how scared Penny was, and he was attempting to put on a strong front for her. He crouched down to get to her level and placed each of his hands on either shoulder. He squeezed just enough to let her know it would be okay, but not too hard.

"Hey. You know what, kid?" He added with a smile, "We’re gonna get out of here and we’ll be just fine. I promise. Okay?"  He took a deep breath and smirked. This girl was tough, and she reminded him so much of himself. “You’re an amazing person, Penny. And don’t let the world ever change that, okay? Never lose yourself.”  Kristoff thought of all the people who ever did him wrong and how they’ve caused him to be the cynical, surly man he is today. Of course there were people who have helped to bring more happiness into his life, but he couldn’t help but think of the bad. "So. If that’s not how you got here, how did you get here?”

Penny fussed, wringing her hands, "Okay." She looked up, and bit back on a shy smile. If Kristoff said it after he'd taken care of those goons, well, who was she to argue? Maybe he was right. Taking a deep breath, she puffed up, and nodded, "Okay! Uhm. I got here through a closet." She shrugged,

"I was asleep an' I had a weird dream, so when I woke up I was here! With the coats! An' so I came to see what was going on an' then I got captured."

She frowned, and deadpanned: "This whole thing is weird."

Open Field || Penny & Diablo

"But-! Awrrrrrk!" He didn’t seem to have a choice, the small child’s grip like a vice as she dragged him after her. He supposed he could just transform back into a bird and fly away, but the shiny thing was at stake. 

"If it’s kept out of reach, then probably for good reason! It’s a sign! Clearly we should just split the damn thing-" He babbled frantically, desperately concentrating on not tripping over his own clumsy human feet.

"No, it's for a sign, silly! Gosh, you're not good at this human stuff for a bird..."

She paused, bumping into him and looked up firmly, "An' don't use bad words! That's rude. You're worse than Mr. Snoops after he has his special sodas-"

Penny had dragged him up the hill and partially from the forest. She paused at the road and looked both ways, just in case after all, as that was something you do at roads, before nodding firmly and continuing on,

"I bet we can have lunch at home, too! What do you like to eat? An' do you got the watch safe, Diabbo?"

I'm Not That Scary, Honest ll Sally and Penny

Sally smiled at the idea of giant mice in pants. It was an interesting thought indeed, even if it did seem slightly impractical. Did mice really have the legs for pants? And why would they wear only pants? Would they need and accompanying coat? And who would make them?

She was pulled from her thoughts by the girl’s concerned expression. “There are quite a few rats where I live, but not all of them try and steal stew. I’m sure there are some lovely rats out there, even if I haven’t personally met them.” Honestly though, she didn’t particularly want to meet any nice rats. It would make her feel slightly more guilty when she cooked rat-tail stew as a treat.

(did mice really have- i cannot. XD) Penny looked relieved, and nodded. "That's good. Maybe we can meet one someday."

Stifling a long yawn with the back of her hand, Penny was relieved the see the road shift to the familiar sort, less cobbles and more pavement, as the architecture grew slightly more homely (if also well-faded), and the red of bricks gave way to white-washed and painted buildings. Ahead, the pale purple of Sunnyside seemed a welcoming sign as any, and Penny's heart lifted. She pointed,

"That's it! Wif the lights on."

Beneath the streetlight it was evident the lower portion of lights had been left on- And a woman was visible with her back to the window, pacing slightly. She hadn't appeared to have picked up the phone yet, which was either a good sign or a bad one.

"Miss Duffy must be worried," Penny breathed, and began to walk faster, pulling on Sally's hand.

I'm Not That Scary, Honest ll Sally and Penny

Sally stopped rather abruptly as the girl turned to glare at her. “I didn’t mean to offend you, I’ve just never heard of anything like that before. It is true though, you don’t have to be too big to help people. I was just wondering because I’ve never met a giant mouse before and I thought that would be very interesting! I don’t think I’ve ever really met any mice though. I have met a rat once, but it was trying to steal some of a stew I was cooking. It really was a rather rude thing.” She frowned at the memory. She hadn’t even poisoned that stew, she’d just made it for the doctor as a favour.

Penny sniffed, but nodded in agreement and took Sally's hand again,

"Well, good. Giant mice would be weird, 'coz then they'd have to wear pants," She considered this out loud, and promptly found the idea silly. Bernard wore a jacket, but he was small-- It covered most of him!

She gave Sally a concerned look, "Rats sound mean! Are there lots of those where you are? Miss Duffy says they're vermin but I've never seen one. Rufus says he keeps the riff-rats out, but then he laughs a lot an' I don't see why it's so funny."

"Yes, well, I can’t have chocolate period. It disagrees with me," He muttered, thinking quickly as she babbled on. At her sudden suggestion, he lit up, "Yes, of course! A sign would be perfect! Now run along and get everything we’d need, I’m sure we’ll need all sorts of things. Paper, pens, glitter, stickers, whatever it is you human kids use for this sort of thing…" He shooed her forward with both hands, "I’ll be right here, I promise," he lied with an reassuring, if a bit greasy grin.

Penny frowned, "How does chocolate disagree-"

But the bird-man had interrupted and she made a face, wrinkling her nose. She deadpanned, "I don't believe you."

Folding her arms, she sniffed, "And I can't reach the supplies. So! You can come with me!" Her grin lit up her face, and she took hold of his hands and began to tug on them,

"C'mon!"

Learning to "spell" || Bert & Penny

Bert outright laughed, at least her momentary horror distracted him from his own worries, “Don’ worry, I’ll vouch for you shoul’ we run into ‘em!” 

Swinging her by her hands like a little chimpanzee herself, they made their way into the aviary, and no sooner had the door swung open the air was full of color and sound. 

"Wind blow so light and airy Here in the aviary Shake a little tail feather Indoors its always perfect weather~!”

The birds sang jovially around them in a plethora of sweet voices and wavering whistles.

"Golly!" Bert beamed in amazement. He was quite impressed with himself, even if he hadn’t had complete part in the formation of this place. The magic had surely taken influence from his imagination- it seemed every bird he had ever seen, be it in book or in person took flight around them. 

Finally, a particularly pretty bird all in yellow and orange landed on a tree branch nearby, tilting it’s head this way and that as it looked them over. Little red eyes locked on Penny, it’s feathered chest suddenly puffed out, “And what sort of bird are you?”

Looking particularly relieved, Penny sagged off of Bert's arm and smiled nervously as she mumbled, "Okay, good-"

There was half a moment's time to respond with a laugh as he swung her up by her hands and around, and suddenly the world was filled with song and she was dizzy. The colors were brighter, somehow as they spun and she could barely count the people passing before they'd reached the aviary, the door bursting open before them with an explosion of brights and noise.

Penny goggled, her hands over her mouth, jaw dropped and eyes wide with laughter as she turned to spot each bird in turn. A trio of cockatiels and a troop of cockatoos, a claw of macaws and a tail of toucans, a brace of budgies and a flail of finches! 

Laughing, Penny looked up at Bert, and whispered, "Wow!"

She turned back to look again and was startled by the yellow bird perching before her. Penny drew back and blushed, hiding against Bert's legs; it was a wonderfully lovely creature, and she felt just a tinge silly in front of it, murmuring,

"I-- I'm Penny."

She peered out, but smiled all the same and spoke a little louder, "I really like your feathers."

  She smiled down at the girl, stifling a giggle. “I’m not fibbing, I swear. And if I do want to cook, I have to go all the way down to the bottom. If my creator wants some soup, I have to walk down to the very bottom and then all the way up to his laboratory to bring it to him. I make it extra hot though, so it’s just the right temperature when I get to him.”

She cocked her to the side and looked at the small girl, curious as to how mice could save someone’s life. A playful smile tugged at the corners of her lips. “Now you’re the one fibbing. Aren’t they awfully small? How did they save your life? Were they giant mice?” She was actually rather serious with that last question. She’d like to meet some giant mice if there were some. She was sure Jack would too.

Penny personally found all of this to be quite odd. It was one thing to not have parents and then another entirely to have a creator, instead, but she supposed that's how some people had to be, right? Rather than question all of this out loud, however, she raised a single brow and managed,

"Uh-huh."

All that walking sounded exhausting-- Maybe that's why she had to be sewn up so much! Maybe her legs had fallen off from too much walking. That seemed right, right?

At the accusation of lying, Penny stopped and glared fiercely,

"I am not! They were from the Rescue Aid So-Si-Et-Tee, an' their names were Bernard an' Bianca. An' they found the letter I sent an' came to rescue me from Medusa in the swamp."

She paused, then added, "They were very little, but you don't have ta' be big to help people."

Deep In the Dark || {Dungeons of Maleficent's Castle} {DRP}

"Okay, left!" Kristoff nodded, completely giving his trust to the girl. He re-squeezed her hand, partly to keep her with him, and partly to tell her it was okay. He scurried to the left, halfway hunched over and stopping every once in a while to look for goons and a green lady. 

At the next intersection of hallways, Kristoff paused and placed his hand on Penny to keep her still. He turned to face her and put his finger up to his pursed lips. Kristoff looked and listened. At this point, he was hearing people voices instead of snorts and growls. That has to be good, right? 

Peering into the next room, Kristoff could see groups of people standing around, talking, and some even dancing. So this must be why they wanted ice. Well I hope all the ice melted outside because they don’t deserve it, anyway!…Locking Penny and I up. Ha! 

Then he saw it. The castle door. Their way out. “Penny!” He whispered, motioning for her to follow him as he made his way.

"Kristoff-" Penny hesitated as shadows and shapes moved into view, circling and dancing as they splayed shadows across the far walls with their movements, timed to the distant and strange music. Her fists balled nervously as she removed Bert's hat and clutched the rim, glancing back,

"I can't go back that way-- That's now how I got here--"

Her whisper was quick and worried. A goon came ambling down the corridor and she pressed flat against the wall with a startled gasp--

But it seemed not to hear and hurried on by with an empty platter, grumbling about lizards. Penny's brow knit as she looked from the hall to the castle door. She came in from the closet-- Was that how she had to get back? And what about Bert's things? Should she leave them with someone?

She clutched the hat tight, heart beating faster as she began to grow worried. What was she going to do?
