“Of course you can, Steven! You’re half-gem too, that has to mean you’re compatible!”

In reality, she had no idea what Steven could or couldn’t do. A gem hybrid’s powers were a mystery to her, but she couldn’t let on to that. Steven’s self-confidence couldn’t take another hit like that.

      His gaze plastered on the elder       gem’s expression as she wove       the story meticulously together,       leaving the youthful half-gem in       utter AWE.

With Pearl’s nearly-eidetic memory and flair for theatrics, telling tales of the Crystal Gems came quite easily to Pearl. And even if it didn’t, she’d do it anyway; Steven’s beyond-happy reactions to her stories was reason enough.

“Well, you clearly still don’t understand. There are dangerous gems roaming the area-- humans, especially young humans, need to stay out of the way until we handle them.”

“What? N-no, Pearl, wait–!” Steven jumps up from his spot in front of the TV to chase after Pearl, sliding ahead of her just before the warp pad, to block off her path. “Pearl, I-I dunno if catching Peridot will make things go back to normal. Maybe you should just.. talk to Garnet. You were just out looking for Peridot, for, like, days! Please, Pearl,” He frowns, little hands reaching out to gentle grasp the Gem’s wrists. “You’re seriously obsessing over catching Peridot, and that’s not even the problem here.”

“Steven, I understand that you want to help, but. Garnet hardly says a word to me outside of missions. I need to make things right with her by catching Peridot.” She steps over and around Steven onto the warp pad. “I’m sorry, Steven, but I need to do this.” And she’s gone, warped away to places unknown.

       “Is it a snake?!”

“...Probably not. We haven’t seen enough of it to be sure of anything.”

“Pearl.. y’know you don’t have to freak out over finding her, right? Let’s just.. take it easy for a while. A lot of stuff’s happened lately, a-and I.. I dunno how healthy this is. You stressing out over Peridot so badly.”

“I can rest later. I’ve disappointed everyone, Garnet especially. I need to make it up to you all by catching Peridot.”

Pearl stands up from her spot beside Steven and begins to walk towards the warp pad.

“We can watch your show after that, okay? Besides, Gems are always healthy. I’ll be fine.”

“I’m sorry, human, but the beach is off limits right now. Until we catch whatever’s lurking beneath the sand, it’ll be too dangerous for non-gems.”

“Crying Breakfast Friends, Pearl. C’mon, it’s a really good episode! Besides, it’s part of the marathon; you need to watch the other episodes to be caught up! It sort of revolves around Crying Pear, and how she really messed up with Sad Spoon, but she’s trying to make things right again! Just give it a chance, c’mon.”

“There’s more?! Steven, I’m only here for a short break, remember? Peridot won’t catch herself while I’m in here watching television. She’ll be out there, wreaking who knows what kind of havoc!”

Pearl fiddles with the phone for a few minutes, furrowing her brow and ‘hmm’ing softly as she goes.

“You don’t have a screwdriver on hand, do you?”

Rose blinked as she looked up at the slender gem as she rambled on about what she was reading in the newspaper. Rose never thought much of what was written– she liked experiencing more than reading.. So she continued to play with a cat that had wandered into the temple before she was called out to.

                   ❝ A great war ? ❞

She approached the gem, looking over their shoulder to exam the article. As she blinked, she read what was on the paper.

                   ❝ The Great War, they’re calling it– Oh dear.                        Europe had its share in wars– but this one                        seem… troubling. ❞

Pearl looked up at Rose, eyebrows knitting slightly. Human wars were short, numerous, pointless, and often blurred in Pearl’s memory. She had assumed the Great War would follow the course of its many predecessors. Pearl only mentioned it for its strange name, merely commenting on one of humanity's many eccentricities‒ but Rose was troubled.

“Should we be worried?”

While Pearl has never been as interested in humans as Rose, artifacts of their civilization do tug on her interest now and then. Today, the artifact is a newspaper, which Pearl scans at the mouth of the temple.

“Rose, it looks like the humans are warring again. They’re calling this one a ‘great war’, which is ridiculous‒ hardly anything is great about war!”
