when nobody had to know
Whatever bad you did in your past – even as Christian – if you turn from your wicked ways and surrender it to God He will turn it into something good. That’s a fact.
““I hope we last. I hope we do. But if we don’t, this is how I want you to remember me: I want you to remember me curled up, listening to the sound of your heartbeat and tracing maps across your skin. Remember me laughing at your jokes, even the stupid ones. Remember me in hysterics for absolutely no reason and in tears because one time you made me so sad neither of us thought I’d recover. Remember me brave, that time you held my hand and I thought I was going to die; remember me scared and gentle and delicate and breakable - only for you though, only for you. Remember me happy, and all the ridiculous ways I tried to get your attention. Remember the way I was too stubborn to talk to you and how absolutely insane it drove the both of us. Remember all the firsts and how they were so delightful we went back for seconds and thirds and fourths. Remember the songs you couldn’t stop listening to and the childish dreams you allowed yourself about the future. If it’s any consolation I allowed myself to have them too. If it comes to it I don’t want you to remember the ending. Remember the beginning. Remember the first time you knew.”

“I understand feeling as small and as insignificant as humanly possible. And how it can actually ache in places you didn’t know you had inside you. And it doesn’t matter how many new haircuts you get, or gyms you join, or how many glasses of chardonnay you drink with your girlfriends… you still go to bed every night going over every detail and wonder what you did wrong or how you could have misunderstood. And how in the hell for that brief moment you could think that you were that happy. And sometimes you can even convince yourself that he’ll see the light and show up at your door. And after all that, however long all that may be, you’ll go somewhere new. And you’ll meet people who make you feel worthwhile again. And little pieces of your soul will finally come back. And all that fuzzy stuff, those years of your life that you wasted, that will eventually begin to fade.”

“Marriage isn’t just sex, it’s conversation and laughter I mean some spouses barely even like each other, and the marriage seems like a dead end You might share a checkbook and a house, but are you actually friends? I mean, if marriage isn’t a commitment, then what’s the point of the vows we say? “‘Til death do us part” really means “Until the feelings go away” Like, I’ll stay with him, but only until it gets tough and my love shifts But I say imagine if a parent took that perspective with their kids Like can’t you see it? The minute the kid spills something on the floor The mom’s saying, “Forget it, I don’t even love you anymore” No, it’s just like marriage, to last you need the strength from above Because it’s not love that sustains the promise, it’s the promise that sustains the love.”

“My dear, I want to build a life with you; I want to be the greatest version of myself because you deserve nothing less. If you let me I’ll spend the rest of my life being the best lover you ever had, taking you to every place you wish to visit, doing everything in my power to make you happy and constantly bring joy to your days, wake you up every morning with kisses on your neck and thighs and lips and every inch of you, buying you flowers and chocolate cause I know how much you love it, hold you when you feel insecure and tell you that no matter what I’m never leaving you - even when you get angry at me and beg me to, I’ll manage to make you laugh and put you in my arms and whisper sweet words in your ear. I promise to never let a day go by without telling you how amazing you are and how much I adore every bit of you and how gorgeous your body is - especially when you think otherwise - and how amazed I am by you. We’ll celebrate our love with shitty alcohol, great weed and amazing sex. I’ll ask you to marry me, not once but a thousand times, I want to marry you every day, every morning along with the great coffee I promise to learn how to make, I’ll marry your soul to mine and always carry our love in my heart.”

“I tell you I love you ten times a day because it is the simplest, shortest way to say this: When you are with me I feel at ease, as if all the tension has slipped right out of my body and morphed into the quiet tenderness that I feel in the air surrounding us. I look at you and you catch me but I don’t even look away because I don’t ever want to study another person’s face so closely ever again. Your life is important to me. You are important to me. Everything between us seems completely illogical and yet I still cannot help but love you - tenderly, violently, loudly, and irrationally. I touch you often, little connections of body to body, but not out of lust. I touch you because even when I am inches away from you, breathing in the air that you are breathing out, I still want to be closer. I want to reassure you that I am here, that I am always here, that I know you don’t need me but you are allowed to lean on me. And you do, so often. Your passion inspires me, and your simple kindness devours me. Your sleepy drooling, your toothy smile, your random singing, the fact that you never question it when I kiss you goodbye on the cheek every time. All things that make me smile. I tell you I love you ten times a day because I do, dammit. I love you. I love you at seven am and I love you at two pm and I love you at midnight. I love you intricately, irrationally, irrevocably. I love you endlessly.”

“Getting to know you was the most wonderful adventure… It was like suddenly discovering the love of my life and my best friend all in one. There were moments when I was almost afraid that this couldn’t be real…. That YOU couldn’t be real… Everything about you was just too perfect and we were so compatible it just didn’t seem possible. But I surrendered to the feeling… let it take me where I knew I was fated to go and I’m so glad that I did because it allowed me to get to know you and in getting to know you I was getting to know myself because YOU are other half of me. It was discovering new things about myself I never knew and remembering things about myself I thought I’d lost like my childlike joy and ability to laugh loudly and love deeply. Finding you brought a magic and a joy into my life unlike anything I have ever known…. and there is not a day that goes by I am not grateful that on a planet of over 7 billion people, I was lucky enough to find you.”

1. they made me wrong so when i came out i never stopped growing empty space. like a garden, i learned how to tend to the divine perfect. if i could playact control, i could be loved gentle. this is the same thing as being a holy child. i had eyes painted on the backs of my hands, and i did it to myself. i didn’t need to be myself. i needed to be what was needed from me.
2. when i saw you, the world broke. i googled beguiling in the back of my father’s car, biting my fingernails off. i wrote you a poem where the first letters all spelled out how do i talk to you anymore. i google help i like a girl and then help asking a girl out and then girl who likes another girl and then let me out.
3. i like this idiom - i’ll spare you the gory details. we don’t usually, when gore is involved. we like to lean in and say horrific things with a sort of sardonic grin. another idiom: misery loves company, after all. three weeks after falling in love with you, i overhear someone in the starbucks of my very small town saying - i’ll spare you the gory details, but it turns out she’s gay. i order my coffee and i leave angry.
4. i would have let the entity under my bed into my back tooth if it would have stopped me from wanting you.
5. i was made to be the one, you know? i was going to be the best at each of my parent’s ideals and i was going to be the best at being a friend and i was going to be the best wife and the best mother. i was going to fill out all of the right boxes and do all the right things and never cry in public. i was an oil painting. i was okay. i was okay. i was going to make it.
