a/n: yayay iām back! didnt expect my first post to get so many likes omgš anyways reader lwk just going thru it- sukuna isnāt rlly talking oops
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~.:*+ā+*:.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
each hand carried a cold drink as you weaved your way out of the drink line, dodging sweaty bodies and loud chatter. the condensation from the drinks dripped down your wrists and arms, making you all the more desperate to make it back to your friend sooner.
for it being your first concert, you expected to have more fun and not to have a pounding headache. the instruments were so impossibly loud, to the point where you could feel every hit of the drum or every strum of the bass physically shake your chest.
and like every other college student, you decided to fight off the misery with alcohol.
double the headache and give it to the next day.
but⦠maybe you shouldnāt head back to your friend so soon.
youāre at the back of the pit now, behind the sea of jumping bodies and head banging; far enough from the music where you still feel in the moment but not assaulted by the roughness of the band.
you wipe the cold condensation off the can of seltzer meant for you friend by wiping it against the fabric of your bottoms. surely, this should make it more bearable to hold.
as you take a sip of your opened can, your eyes naturally drift to a familiar sight. the familiarity almost makes you nauseous but you canāt point it out.
it could be the bitterness of the drink after all.
but the posture⦠the spiky hair⦠everything about this person.
reminds you of sukuna.
and suddenly the band is drowned out, but not the singer. not the yearning in his voice, not the lyrics that he sings as if he were personally mocking what you once felt when looking at the person in front of you.
ātell me where youāre gonna be when iām goneā
you no longer feel like youāre standing at the back of a concert. instead, youāre sitting in his passenger seat, looking out the window at the white covered streets and hearing the song for the first time as he sings along with his thumbs thumping against the steering wheel.
āyouāve got more of my own heart than iāve gotā
you still remember the way you quietly replayed the lyrics in your mind long after the song had ended; how heād sung it with more emotion, more enthusiasm- more something, in his tone, and whether it had meant anything or if you were just overthinking.
āwill you walk to class alone on tuesday?ā
you can still smell his musky cologne mixed with the hot smell of the carās heater.
āare you choosing someone better?ā
and you still remember the look in his eyes when heād glance over from time to time, even though you pretended to not notice.
āare you still gonā wear my sweater?ā
but based off the way he acted towards the end, perhaps there never was a look. maybe he never felt anyway towards you and it was all one sided.
āwhatāre you doing here?ā
your heart drops a million miles down to your ass.
heās now standing in front of you, the same brow raised as always when something threw him off.
āmaking use of the student discount.ā you throw out quickly, feeling the walls draw up.
itād be best to keep it cold anyways. then, you wonāt have to worry about seeming too pathetic in front of him.
yeah, youāre doing great without him. at a concert with friends, drinking, having the time of your life.
thatāll show him.
āoh, i didnāt know you listened to malcolm.ā sukunaās tone only seemed to pick up more confusion.
what the hell are you supposed to say? āyeah i never did until i started missing you?ā youāre just gonna look like a bird, honestly.
āeveryone does now.ā you shrug.
not bad. not terrific either.
āfairā¦ā
a small silence fills the two of you, metaphorically. the drummer is still playing the fuck out those drums in reality.
āyāknow⦠uhm⦠the fratās throwing a party on friday.ā sukuna adds almost hesitantly.
seriously? he ghosts you after months of what you thought was something developing, avoids you like the plague around campus, and now has the audacity to invite you to a party?
what happened to an apology? not even a meager āsorryā for ghosting you after all that? after meeting his family? after all those study dates? after genuinely being you first everything?
does his brain just light up with sparkles after trying to make everything okay when it wasnāt?
maybe it was petty, but if you were a guy, you surely wouldnāt feel like ghosting a girl on a random tuesday after spending the night before telling her how perfect she was and how grateful you were for her.
āyeah? well iāve gotta head back⦠soā¦ā you smile awkwardly before hastily slipping away.
āare you gon-?ā but you were quick to get out of there
what a way to ruin a night. if anything you just feel irritated now.
the post-concert debrief is going to be brutal.
