Haley Fohr’s music strikes a unique balance between the personal and universal. As Circuit des Yeux she creates music that embodies the complexity of human emotions, juxtaposing tenderness and grief, ecstasy and horror, using sounds as representations of the emotional spectrum that we all experience. Fohr’s striking voice, an impassioned baritone, is the music’s centerpiece and guiding force. On In Plain Speech, Fohr is joined by some of the most progressive musicians in the Chicago music community; Cooper Crain (Cave, Bitchin Bajas), Whitney Johnson (Verma), Rob Frye (Bitchin Bajas), Adam Luksetich (Little Scream), and Kathleen Baird (Spires That In The Sunset Rise). Fohr cements her reputation as a fearless songwriter and inventive arranger with this stirring collection of songs that are both gorgeous and emotionally potent.

FOUDRE! is a new experimental project created by Frédéric D. Oberland (Oiseaux-Tempête, FareWell Poetry, Le Reveil des Tropiques), Romain Barbot (Saåad) & Grégory Buffier (Saåad, Autrenoir, Mondkopf). This, their debut cassette, compiles their first meetings and rehearsals. The resulting "Magnum Chaos", almost 40 minutes of total improvisation, is like the centre of a black-hole, a total, almost oppressive collapsing of the trio's energies. Experimental, noise, drone, dark-ambient, electronic, lo-fi, chiaroscuro, these varying aesthetics converge to create a darkened room full of flickering stars and fading shadows. "Magnum Chaos" is too dense and too rich to be considered a demo tape. It is, rather, a sincere recording of the birth of a project. A recording where unedited events and audio clips are there to document and remind that for all the hours of fine tuned arrangements there must also be the pure expressions of three musicians in a free environment.

Richter’s material has always been characterized by an air of surrealism, but it’s never been more obvious than on the the pulsing, chattering opener ‘Human Ghidrah’ or in the delirious fractured pop of ‘Hands’. There are real songs in hidden somewhere, but disintegrated by Richter’s sound manipulation techniques and dissolved into soupy extended drone marathons. The centerpiece is undoubtedly ‘Is Nowhere’, which builds slowly over 20 minutes with rumbling organ sounds and buzzing filters, never budging your attention for a second.

Black To Comm is a deeper, more challenging record than its predecessor, but one which repays the patient listener. Richter’s dusty, unique sound has never sounded more well-honed and pointed, and it’s a patchwork of ideas and fragments that only improves over time.

SECOND MOON OF WINTER is a new experimental ensemble from Ireland melting discordant ambiences with luminous soprano. Their first installment, a six track album called “One for Sorrow, Two for Joy”, will be released on Denovali Records in January 2015.

“One for Sorrow, Two for Joy” was written and recorded live in a series of four hour sessions in a basement by the sea in County Cork in the south of Ireland; no computers, no playback of samples, no overdubs, no further processing after the event.

It is three people performing live in an intensely personal collaboration. Knowing each other well and yet having never experimented together before, it felt almost like a necessity to combine their far-flung musical minds. Waves of sound created predominantly on guitar and clarinet, provide a backdrop for singing rarely experienced outside an opera house, and yet with a subtle connection to Irish folk song also.

Inspired by the symbolism of photos, prints and memories, the studio floor was strewn with semi-precious melodies, never knowing which was to be picked up next, to be held and then polished like sea glass in a tidal soundscape.
