“I am usually good about not doing that, but she just looked so old and frail that I had to say yes. What if she dies tomorrow? I’d feel really bad.” Maybe the woman had been acting to get Emily’s pity and if she did it definitely had worked. “That’s fair. Same here. Not that I want to get anyone a rose either. I’m fine being single at the moment.” Just because she was single didn’t mean she was celibate, she was having fun. Emily laughed when he joked about his lack of a green thumb. “I like flowers but the commitment of trying to keep them alive is just a lot. I overwater them, or I think I already watered them and then it turns out I didn’t and they wilt. I don’t understand what people have against fake flowers. They can be just as aesthetically pleasing.”
Chuckling, Preston ran a hand over his face. “You keep talking like that, and I’ll be hunting her down to buy the whole bunch. Fuck knows I don’t have that kind of money, especially not at $10 a pop. I know what you mean though. I have similar thoughts myself, it’s that weird anxiety that just kind of...Pops up.” His eyes fell to the ground momentarily before he brought them back up to focus on the woman. “Well, I’m glad to hear it. Single’s just about the only thing I know, so I guess I can say the same.” A blush crept up Preston’s cheeks at his own admission. Truth be told, he wasn’t quite as fine as he made himself out to be. Not that he was dying for a relationship, but some physical contact with someone who wasn’t paying him would have been welcome. “See! Now there’s something else we can relate on. I’m in the same boat. I love looking at real ones, sure, but you’re right about fakes. And, these days, they’re made so well half the time I can’t even tell!” Glancing at the commotion around them, he shoved his hands into his pockets. “So, other than getting guilted out of ten bucks, how are you enjoying your time out here? There sure is a lot to do.”
