sometimes the general heights of fictional characters get so ingrained in my head that I forget it’s not their canonical height/they don’t have a canonical height

someone will call a character I’ve decided to be tall a short king and it completely changes my perception of the character because I’d genuinely never considered it. like I have to sit there and think about it. people think that character is short. what a world we live in

That sounds stupid because all queer kids have moms (whether good relationship or not) but it’s the only way I can phrase it. It hits so hard because yeah, it is like that.

I don’t think I’ve seen queer media that depicts this kind of relationship accurately until Leviticus

when people blame/get mad at Naim for all the bad things that happened to Hunter and Ryan (and him, too btw) I have to wonder if they even watched the movie

how do walk away from this movie with the understanding that Naim didn’t deserve a happy ending/was a bad person?? The entire point was that it was the homophobia of the town that did this to them. Naim didn’t curse Hunter or Ryan, he didn’t kill Hunter, he never wanted to hurt anyone and he had no idea Rod would call a fucking deliverance healer to curse his own son!!

I just feel like instead of blaming the scared queer kid we should blame the people who actually caused the harm (the town, the church, Rod etc).

the theory that naim and ryan do run into the real versions of each other in the woods that night actually does make a lot of sense to me. not only because it doesn’t make sense that the entity would act like that (pretend to be ryan by acting afraid, successfully fooling naim) without pushing it to the full extent (using that trust to get close and attack; using their lust and affection against each other as it does throughout the movie). Instead, the ryan naim sees in the woods throws shit at him, attacking first— even though naim assumes the best. If that was the entity, it would’ve exploited that. but the ryan naim meets does not. so there’s that, but also I believe that theory because the throwing-shit method is ryan’s expression of his own internal conflict, something I think the entity would not care enough to take the time to copy as it focused on getting to Naim.

In this situation it’s ryan who thinks naim is the entity, so he reverts to violence the only way he knows how to in the context of being gay. His previous experiences with hunter all involved violence as a precursor to affection. as he lets out his anger at what he imagines to be entity!Naim it of course leads back to that, this thing that has been wearing naim’s face — naim, who he actually cares about; naim, who is the first to have offered him vulnerability without the prerequisite of violence. As it subverts naim’s character, ryan subverts his own role in his relationship with naim to deal with it; as entity!Naim is the opposite of the care ryan has come to associate with naim, how ryan treats it becomes the opposite of how he treats, or would treat, naim. the opposite of his relationship with naim, eg his relationship with hunter. the entity targets ryan’s desire for naim and uses it against him, making affection and sexuality into violence again. and by using ryan’s new trust of naim in order to isolate and attack him, the entity is intended to make being gay into something to be frightened of — a new attempt at enforcing internalized homophobia, meant to force ryan into compulsory heterosexuality: the outcome the church wants from this whole event.

In other words — thematically, it works. it’s the method the entity used against hunter to gain his trust and kill him. it’s the thing that caused ryan and hunter to be cursed by the deliverance healer in the first place, after naim outed them for doing it. it’s everything bad about being gay, every bit of internalized homophobia, that ryan is now throwing directly at the thing trying to use being gay against him. It’s like — poetic justice. sorta. if that makes sense. it’s more thematic if it’s true, in any case, so I’d like to believe it

#I feel like it was the real Ryan in the woods 100%#Purely because the entity never attacks first. It’s always trying to act like the person it looks like and Ryan (barring teenage boy shit #like wrestling) is gentle with Naim. When the entity is trying to trick like it would be in the woods it offers Naim comfort to disarm him #so the fact that Ryan attacks first makes me believe that he’s real and he’s also being hunted by the entity.#“Oh but Ryan would never want to hurt Naim why would he attack first”#Ryan’s also cursed. Ryan’s also scared all the time. He probably thought Naim’s hesitation in the woods was the entity acting like Naim to #lure him in or something #leviticus #ryan whelan #naim reid #That being said I LOVE the way this scene is shot. Like left up to interpretation. We the viewer never actually know #if it was Ryan or the entity. We can guess and speculate but we never know For Sure. Just like Naim and Ryan didn’t know For Sure #we the viewer get a REAL glimpse into their fear because every other time we’ve known eventually that it was the entity or not #this is the only moment where we the viewer are in the dark entirely.
