" for starters you look gorgeous. " hand touches shoulder of the taller, a crinkle in the eye at the presence of the blonde. " but i need your help. how do i get out of these conversations ? i feel like im being circled by vultures in hereย โ and the mirrors are making them all multiply. " her brain fuzzied by champagne, and her eyes dart around as she crowds closer to the other. " seriously. i was talked at for fourty five minutes by a sixty year old man trying to get me to model. "
the touch startled blair because of her aversion of it but when she recognized who it was, she calmed down. it was almost painful to see how many people here couldn't stand the pressure of rubbing elbows with the personalities that roamed these events. and honestly, who could blame them? blair recognized it was easier for her because she stopped giving a fuck a long time ago. "i'd suggest throwing a drink on their face but that wouldn't be too low key," she said simply, a small touch of reassurance given to evangeline. these parties were draining and exhausting. she couldn't imagine having to perform to the level that some people here did.
"men are gross. i'm sorry. do you need anything? air? if anyone comes up to us i'll just stab their foot with my very expensive heels."
of all the familiar faces evan had run into tonight, and all the lengthy superficial conversations, there was a particular blonde he'd been looking for and hadn't managed to find just yet. though it seemed like he kept seeing her everywhere, in everyone. whenever he spotted golden locks out of the corner of his eyes, a fleeting wave of excitement rushed over him only to be completely ripped away when she turned around. he'd started to question if she even made it. if news of her showing up had been just.. rumors. pushing past several bodies, evan made it to the door leading out to the gardens. his eyes instantly landed on the familiar silhouette of the female he'd recognize almost anywhere. he snuck up behind her, fingers lightly brushing the small of her back and dropping back down to his side in a fist. "if i didn't know any better, i'd say you're hiding out here," he smirked, face turning slightly to study blair's features.
to know know he was near blair didn't have to see him with her own eyes. it was like a shift in the air happened and every single nerve of her body awakened, even with all the champagne she had in her system. she had made her way to the gardens to avoid the busy crowd of people that seemed to huddle together and suck all the air of the room. classic for the kind of people that met there tonight.
she had been standing outside wishing she had a cigarette to calm her anxiety, to calm the sense of impending doom. even feeling him near got her confused if she felt nervous or excited. she never knew and finding out wasn't a priority. so when she felt the fingers on the small of her back and then saw him standing in front of her, blair could swear she was truly breathing then and there. everything else had been automatic. now she felt alive.
"you do know better," blair countered, standing up straight, letting him take her in. she slowly felt the atmosphere around them disappearing, leaving them alone to their selves. "i'm hiding and you're finding. as per usual." shifting her weight to her other foot, she looked down for a second before looking back up. "how's tonight treating you?"
"oh, i'm so there," jodi was not going to occupy her brain with thoughts of how tomorrow would feel. she wanted to pretend like she was someone else tonight and get out of her own head, no matter how many drinks that took. "i feel like i drained my social battery on the wrong conversations. hate to say it out loud, blair, but this is where i admit how lost i'd be if i didn't have you holding my hand," a giggle slipped past her lips as she accepted the refilled flute from the blonde and clinked their glasses together. "to an unforgettable forgettable night with my favorite rockstar."
sometimes blair wondered if she had grown up with her siblings, maybe she'd like them more. meeting someone like jodi made her heart ache with nostalgia, her mind wandering ever so slightly to how life would have been if she had a big family with people she actually liked and could tolerate. with her mother pressuring her constantly and her absent father, how was it even possible to foster actual connections with anyone else? cordelia grace valmont knew no such thing and neither did blair madison.
blair's eyes burned a little, tears pushing their way but she quickly held them back as the two flutes clinked together and they both shot the drinks back. "i'm glad i can be here for you. lord knows we all need the support, but no one says anything." ironic, coming from the woman who has an emotional blockage and can't write a damn song ever since her father passed.
"how's your music going? the band and the campaigns and all." she asked jodi, genuine interest crossing her features. music talk would always trump any other stupid mindless conversation anyone else here would have. "i've seen you all around except for social media which is weird considering our line of work."

never mind the fact they're already occupied in a conversation beforehand , the model makes her way over , hips moving in rhythm of the music in the background . alana cuts between , back turned to the woman talking as she faces the person she wants . " has anyone here told you how sexy you look tonight ? " the compliment rolls easy off her tongue , fox eyes moving down to catch the entire assemble the other's wearing . " spettacolare , "
it's not like the conversation blair had going on was interesting, so when she saw the model-like blonde making her way towards where blair stood, she couldn't help but absolutely forget about the person in front of her. being approached this way wasn't unusual, but this level of direct didn't often come from girls who looked like her. and certainly, she wasn't a total stranger - seeing her face in fashion campaigns everywhere basically made her a big brand household name but blair already had too many drinks her and the name was just not coming up.
as a chuckle escaped from blair's lips, she nodded, impressed by the compliment and the italian. "that was definitely my goal tonight, seems like it worked." dismissing the previous company with a lazy hand, blair focused on the woman in front of her. "you're a stunner as well but i'm certain you already knew that."
brown eyes flicker from sparkling chandeliers to the unexpected sight of the femme, recognizing the familiar face from the chaos of a shared social scene and spotify's top hits playlist. drink is accepted with an arched eyebrow, voice carrying a hint of amusement as she responds, ใ well, you've saved me from the arduous task of elbowing my way through the crowd to secure my own poison. ใ glass raised in a toasting gesture, she takes a sip of the drink. ใ lonely might be a bit of a stretch, ใ she muses towards the other, ใ but i do appreciate the rescue. marie antoinette's ghost isn't much of a conversationalist. ใ the brunette leans against a gold-trimmed table and appraises her counterpart's outfit with a not-so-subtle once-over, her gaze lingering on the details. ใ nice choice of attire, by the way. it's giving 18th century domme vibes, ใ she remarks, genuine approval laced with teasing tone, ใ and i mean that as a compliment. ใ she gestures around at the powdered wigs and lace enthusiasts, ใ so, blair, did you come for the immersive fashion experience or, uhm, everything else, i suppose ? ใ
being in the presence of luciana was always quite the experience. by the way she talked, moved and gestured, you never knew if she wanted to end you or devour you, under whatever context would fit the situation. when she took the drink and sipped, blair observed her and their looks collided as luciana did a glance over blair's attire. "18th century domme vibes is 100% the vibe i was going for." the validation and admiration felt so good to blair. appreciated creative effort was always such a boost. "you might be missing some fabric but that definitely works for you and your... silhouette." with a soft smirk, blair added, "and i mean that as a compliment."
following the gesture and setting her gaze on a wig that stood out from the crowd, blair sighed and grimaced. "i don't know if i'd call this fashion," she started, "but it's certainly something. not everyone understood the assignment but that's okay. we needed the entertainment. i came because of family. my brother's around here somewhere being an arrogant asshole. very valmont of him and whatever." shifting her gaze from the wig, she turned to luciana. "and you? not lonely but also not accompanied..."
jodi took a good look at the black ensemble mirroring her own, immediately feeling connected to female. they both had opted for similar aesthetics and seemed to be among the few who flipped the color palette around. "oh, you would think," she started, feeling relieved that out of anyone who could've walked into this conversation โ it ended up being her. "no, no, no, i'm not nearly drunk enough for that. what matters is that you're here and god, please, don't make me stick my nose in the air any longer than i need to, i'm exhausted."
the chuckle was inevitable, for the other was definitely saying outloud what blair had been thinking the whole night -- and her whole life. "if you're not drunk enough then we need to fix that," blair said simply, her head turning immediately to search for a server with a drink tray. in blair's head, there's nothing 2... or 4 bottles of champagne couldn't fix. "babes, you're in the wrong event if you're already this tired this early on." the people around them were all rich, famous, big reputations, big personalities... an interesting melting pot. surely blair hated these appearances but being taught from such an early age how to navigate them, she'd just turn on the switch and get through it.
grabbing two more flutes, from a passing tray, she gave one to jodi. "come on drummer girl, drink up."
โง โธป ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ he was nursing on, Alyxine turns towards the voice coming from beside him and was pleasantly surprised to face such a stunning guest. โWhy thank you. I could say the same about you. Youโre out here making a statement, gorgeous. I won't be surprised if you make the headlines in the morning.โ He lets a chuckle leave his lips and allows his gaze to trail from the musicianโs hairdo down to her heels.
โHow is the music coming along? Or better yet, no work talk โ tell me what you have been up to?โ โธป
being amongst this crowd her whole life still didn't make blair savvy in determining if people's compliments were real or sarcastic. at the end of it, she'd go with the actual content of the message and leave undertones and hidden meanings to someone who cared. she took things at face value, a methodology she practice for her own relationships.
"a statement is exactly what i wanted to i'll definitely take that compliment and save it in my arsenal," blair told the designer with a small smile. "now they can save the headlines; if it isn't for my music, i don't want it." and it was half true. she couldn't deny she loved the spotlight and the tabloids eating her shit up. but fashion wasn't her priority, even though she did enjoy it. but at the moment, what music was she even putting out when she was so focused on everything surrounding the death of her father and his damn company?
"no work talk," she nodded, feeling a little lost. frankly, talking work, music, creating, was the easiest thing that came to her. what the fuck was she supposed to talk about now? "i've been, uh," she hesitated for a moment, unlikely for her. "getting drunk and partying like an animal, honestly." her shoulders gave a shrug and with her drink she pointed at them. "what about you? you said no work talk but you must have some masterpieces coming out soon, i'm sure."
social functions were always at the top of the list of things blair abhorred to do. having to keep appearances because of her last name and her family tree was absolutely ridiculous, but if it meant keeping her image buzzing and her brand alive, she'd do that and more. maybe if she had someone's support to get through these things it'd be easier, but that wasn't something blair allowed herself to do. she did have siblings that are technically "contractually" obligated to be her life long companionships but she didn't even know how to go about that when she didn't even know them that well. her father dying could have been the push in that direction, but blair simply refused to forge any ties with anyone valmont.
she was sure she'd run into dante here. this was 100% his vibe; the perfect place for him to cultivate his golden boy persona. blair just thought the whole act was a fucking joke. "is this all you know how to do?" she asked as she approached him, his build and hair unmistakeable in the crowd, or maybe it was just the sibling tether that always pulled blair towards her half brother. "attend lavish parties, wear expensive clothes and appear mightier than thou?" funny she'd say that considering she loved doing the exact same thing.
one would think that grabbing a drink in an event like this would be easy, but amongst the sea of people and the busy bars, it was easier to grab them collectively and down them as fast as one could. that's what blair thought worked best anyways. โ ย you looked lonely so i got you a drink.ย โ she said as she approached the infamous luciana labaki. there was some odd chance they had run in the same groups at some moments, but not recognizing a face that lived on everyone's screens was almost impossible.
โย i just wanted to say that i really like your outfit.ย โ and of course she'd say that, feigning aloofness because she clearly knew who he was. but giving too much too soon was often something people didn't appreciate; and that wasn't much like what blair liked to give off about herself.
โย is there a reason youโre here on your ownย ?ย with that coat, seems like you should have quite the crowd with you.โ blair nodded to the big fur coat her wore. she wouldn't admit it but she loved it. had one at home resembling his own but she tried to keep it to certain places in fear of someone else messing it up.
jeweled black nails wrapped around a champagne flute delicately, fingers decorated with an assortment of rings jodi was rarely, if ever, spotted without. the appeal of the gala was wearing off and though she'd promised her manager she wouldn't get into anything, she was starting to question if she wanted to keep that promise. not being the least bit inebriated was not helping either. at the first sign of someone nearby, jodi turned around and blurted out, "you're hard to find now, aren't you?"
there was always something intriguing to blair when she would run into people that seemed to be on the same wavelength as her own. she could perceive some traits of personality with the details the other person was choosing to present. the black nails, the heels and all the jewelry; an ensemble that paired splendidly with blair's own.
"don't think it'd be truly that difficult - being dressed in all black in a sea of people wearing white." this was matter-of-factly, as everyone else had chosen to go for the classic marie antoinette palette. the tone and the way the question had been presented made blair curious and she wondered what else might be blurted out with more time. entertaining, she thought. "is that an actual question or a projection?"
Gemma never could resist a mirror. It's not vanity, though she does little to dispel this rumor. Rather โ habit, and perfectionism so deeply ingrained through decades of training that she has little choice but to obsessively check her lines and posture. There is the slightest shift, shoulders drifting back millimeters as she studies herself until she is performance ready. But the usual meticulous self-critique blurs a bit at the edges, champagne maybe, or something else. Anything to dull the knifeโs edge of raw emotion constantly tugging from both ends. She loses herself for just a moment, the girl in the mirror shifts into ghost โ just another lovely thing to haunt these halls. And then she is not alone, lithe fingers clutching at her chest. โChrist, you startled me โ โ Gemma is back on stage, smile balancing perfectly between expressive charm and aristocratic aloofness. โI thought you might be one of the ghosts, places this old and full of history must be haunted.โ
it's always the pretty ones who get lost in their reflection, blair thought. she had been wandering around, seeing if there was anyone who wouldn't make this evening more dreadful than what it already was. having to show up at these functions because of her family status was still something she had to get used to.
standing to the side of the person in front of her, blair raised her eyebrows and took a sip of her drink when the other spoke up, seemingly breaking away from their trance. "what makes you so sure i'm not?" blair countered, her accent a bit heavy thanks to the drinks she'd already consumed. perhaps she should pace herself; but perhaps not. "not gonna lie, you look like a ghost yourself."

"That - is what we call controversy. That - is what we call publicity. That - is what we call a juicy story. And you're welcome. Because of me, that piece is twice as long and half of it is about you! This is press, my budding young starlet - not prestige. Get used to it. Now get in the booth and finish the song. I got this place on lock-out and I'm paying through the fucking nose. So let's go, let's go. Sing. Sing!"
