[Empty cup] -just on Tumblr, no idea to make this a full blown AO3 idea yet!]
I really enjoy the thought of Neteyam teaching Spider how to use his bow, sure Lo'ak helps and is definitely a great teacher too, but Neteyam is the best youngest archer in the clan (if I read the visual dictionary right) and Spider gets to be taught by him.
It's a no brainer that the sullys would teach him, and obviously he took to the Na'vi way since he was little, but i doubt he got a bow till a little later on, maybe giving Neteyam time to better his skill before teaching Lo'ak and Spider his skills.
I can imagine them not to far from the village, standing by a large river stream with a bunch of fish and Neteyam helping Spider with his form and making playful remarks on how he was using a much smaller bow then Neteyam's.
I can imagine how many days and weeks those two stood there or trained fought just to better eachothers skills.
I can also imagine Lo'ak joining in some days, even if he wouldn't admit it, he enjoyed learning from the golden child of the clan, who happens to be his older brother.
I can also see Neytiri coming to collect her children and seeing them helping Spider, maybe she doesn't say something, maybe she does.
Maybe it would be tiny things like,
"You teach him with arrows too big"
"You should not teach him these things"
"Let the sky people deal with his living"
But i doubt she stops them.
Maybe she likes to watch from afar, seeing how well Spider does due to her sons work on teaching him, and Spiders willingness to adapt to their ways.
Maybe it reminds her of Jake all those years ago, the way she had to teach him children's things, maybe sometimes she sees Neteyam teach the same things she had to do and takes a step back.
Spider in learning how Jake learned. Empty cup. Not yet poisoned by their insanity.
He dresses like them, like how Jake had too, he gets Kiri to paint his skin like the stripes Jake and they all had, how his hair looks so much like Jake's.
She sees Jake in his five fingered hands and quick witted mind, how he stood and how he talked.
But Jake was blue, Spider was quarter painted blue with staining berries and childlike dreams.
Maybe she expected him to grow out of it. Maybe she hoped he did, just to leave her mind out of it's tearing thoughts.
But he doesn't, his bow gets bigger as he does, still learning with Neteyam, flying on their Ikrans with yips and laughter like hers.
He admirers Eywa like they all do, yet he would never connect with her.
He believes in the rights and wrongs her and her family do, he dresses like them, looks like them as much as he could, is always with her children letting them learn while learning himself about the planet and the way his life would be like.
Maybe a few months before the first kidnapping of Spider, she sees Neteyam and Lo'ak still teaching Spider, even if he doesn't need it anymore, the three standing at the same ever changing yet not river, and something in her realises Spider will never leave.
Not while Neteyam still teaches and lo'ak still pushes him, not while Kiri paints his skin and keeps him company, not while Tuk hides behind him while teasing her older siblings and coming to him to help her fix her broken things.
She knows Spider won't leave, she deals with it. No matter how much she speaks of the sky people's demon blood.
Maybe when Spider is taken, when her family is safe and sound, she sees Spiders bow in their family Mauri, Kiri sitting beside it, her five fingers curling on the wood as she cries into Spiders latest craft.
She sees Neteyam looking at his hands with a distant look, Lo'ak and Tuk quiet as they slowly pack away their things.
Ready to move away, leave Spider in the arms of the RDA, to be safe.
Maybe while she does one last sweep to make sure they have gotten everything they need, she finds a photo, one of her only likes of human making is their photos.
Maybe she sees a photo of Neteyam, Kiri, Lo'ak, Tuk and Spider sitting inside the Mauri, Spider holding out his old kid bow to Tuk who was smiling so wide Neytiri's face hurt, she sees how well Spider fits in with her children, all demon blood running through them.
But her children was not that of demons, raised in the full Na'vi way.
A part of her knows Spider was raised the same. But it was...different.
She puts the photo with her things.
When Spider was gone, she knew his impact of loosing him was large.
Her children were defiant. Angry, sad and hurt. So so hurt that Spider was in the hands of humans, his own kind.
Maybe she remembers back to the river, Neteyam teaching Spider, the photo, Neteyam's blood on her hands as she weaps over her dead sons body, maybe it was why she ran through the forest. To her Jake cradling an almost to limp body of Spider as she crashes into the dirt.
Maybe she was remembering all the times she doubted his trust in the Na'vi, that he would be like his father.
But as she held his pink skinned face ridden with tears, the makeshift stripes of blue, his Kuru sat on his back as his hands shook in his lap, she knew she was a fool in her hate.
Not in the rest of the humans, their insanity was too far gone to save, but Spider Socorro, who she unwillingly raised was not covered in their insanity.
Not even when spending months in their direct care, with his so called father that came in a false skin.
He chose them. The forest. The reef. His clothing and style shows it, his songchord and his hair and the tattoo he wears. He shows his willingness on his body. Wears them with pride she tried to blow out from the beginning.
Maybe after she said Oel ngati kameie to him, as her hands fell away from his face as they got ready to move, she saw a soft red of her three fingered handprint on the sides of his face.
It made her flinch back, she had seen worse, when she a killed all those demons on the ship, her blood covered hands on their faces was nothing but relief.
Now it pained her.
Her children had taught him the Navi way, it showed in his bow, his walk, his talk.
But he had taught her that humans were not marked for evil.
Not if they are brought up right.
She still struggles to see their hands, still lives in her hate.
But she looks at the photo often.
And maybe when they all connect to the spirit tree, she is there, hiding in the trees as she watches Neteyam teach Spider how to use his bow, Lo'ak throwing small rocks around Spider in a way to distract him while Tuk holds Spiders kid bow with a great mount of pride, all while Kiri lies nearby, eyes closed as the grass pulses around her.
Maybe she sees Spiders wide, grateful smile as Neteyam praises his stance, but she thinks herself blind for not seeing that same kid years ago.
