River Phoenix performing with Aleka’s Attic in the early 90s.
“[At the 1998 Toronto International Film Festival], I told Joaquin about the time his older brother River attended TIFF, in 1991, promoting My Own Private Idaho. I’d met River at a post-premiere gala at a club where I hosted Saturday-night events, called Barracuda [formerly the Copa] where I noticed Phoenix and his friend were clumsily attempting to stuff several bottles of beer into their jacket pockets to take back to their suite at the Four Seasons, which was a block away. I told them I could sneak what they wanted -and more - past security. After all, I had connections. This was my town and, thankfully for them, my bar.
Joaquin laughed and said, ‘Yeah, that’s something that River used to do at bars back in L.A.’ I didn’t tell him about the strung-out state that his older brother was in that evening we met, or, God forbid, mention River’s overdosing outside Johnny Depp’s club The Viper Room. If you had switched on any TV or radio station a few hours after River’s death, you would have heard Joaquin’s anguished 911 call being played repeatedly. Small wonder that he now freezes out anyone who trespasses on his memories if River ever comes up in interviews.
With him and I, we were just two guys talking at a bar toasting an amazing actor. The two were obviously extremely close. As Joaquin and I talked some more about River over more cocktails, I saw him start to tear up and then cry. I remember giving him a quick embrace before he was shuffled off amongst his co-stars. At the time it dawned on me that River Phoenix had died on Halloween night, 1993. He was 23 years old. On the night I brought Joaquin Phoenix to tears in 1998, he, too, was 23 years old"

Friendly reminder this show was filmed in front of a live studio audience in one take.
And that all sitcom laugh tracks are taken from this show because the laughter was so sincere.
