a/n: i tried to make onigiri the other day and completely failed but at least it gave me an idea for a (self-indulgent) fic lmao :(
THE FRAGRANT AND SLIGHTLY SWEET SMELL of steaming rice permeates the proximity of the kitchen as white smoke billows from the rice cooker. Your steady gaze carefully examine your boyfriend’s coordinate movements while he layers a generous handful of warm rice on the palm of his large hand and creates a depression in the middle. You offer a perfunctory nod between each step as he continues to explain and demonstrate how to construct the rice with flavorful add-ons in the centre before pressing the rice around the filling and shaping it into a perfect triangle and wrapping a thick strip of nori (dried seaweed) around it.
"You make it look so easy. I attempted this three times already and it always turns out so... sad and deformed.” Your bottom lip protrudes out into a small pout, which reflects the sorry state that are your rice balls as Osamu places his creation next to it. God, it made you feel even worse when the differences in skills are visually apparent between your lumpy, discolored onigiri and his better than excellent one. “Ugh, how did you become so good at this?”
“Don’t worry, dumpling. Jus’ takes some practice, that’s all.” His mouth quirks into a simper and he leans down to press a quick kiss to your temple, which did nothing to alleviate your sullen expression. A defeated sigh escapes you, and Osamu knew you weren’t ready to throw in the towel until you produced a rice ball that you were entirely content with. He always admired your perseverance to withstand any challenges until you reigned successfully, even if that challenge standing in your way during this moment is The Art of Onigiri. “Want me to walk you through it again?”
"Yessss, please.” You emphasize by balling your hands into cute fists with a determined gleam in your eyes. “This time around, I’m definitely gonna get it right.”
“That’s the spirit.” He encourages, reaching for the bowl of clean water to saturate his hands to prevent the rice from sticking and creating a messy situation. You follow his every motion to a meticulous level, even rubbing your hands with salt since he mentioned that it enhances the flavor and allows the rice balls to keep for a longer period. “Now, since your hands are smaller than mine try using less rice. Maybe the problem was that you were piling on too much which made it harder to work with.”
“Really? Well, okay. You’re the teacher, after all.” You reach for the rice when it’s your turn and spread an amount you thought was appropriate onto your hand in a uniform layer. Osamu patiently waits for you before moving to the next phase. “Umm, is this good enough?”
“Yeah. Now, we make a well in the middle for the filling.” He presses two fingers in the centre creating an indentation, and you follow his lead. The next step is to select your filling, and he lets you choose first and advises that you should use less than what you think you need, since he speculated the problem was you adding too much which made it hard to wrap the perimeter of the rice around it. Hence, the reason for your discolored onigiri since some of the filling was peeking through.
"How’re you doing so far, babe?” He glances over to inspect your progress and gives you his silent approval before returning his focus back to his pending onigiri after he receives your response. “Good, I think. It’s just this next part that’s a little hard.”
When Osamu goes to form the rice ball, he instructs that you want to carefully move the rice upward with your hands around the filling until it’s completely covered. Then add enough pressure when you’re shaping it into a triangle to secure the contents inside and so that the rice doesn’t fall apart, but not too much otherwise it’ll impact the texture of the rice. You attempt to follow his directions but it was easier said than done, since the rice was being uncooperative no matter how hard you try to wield it.
“Oh. My. God. This is impossible. The rice is getting everywhere.” You whine softly, and glance at Osamu for assistance but noticed he was close to being done. “Wait, how are you finished already? Were you hiding that somewhere??” You stare at him incredulously, and he emanates a soft chuckle as he adds the finishing touches to his creation. Garnishing a dollop of umeboshi (pickled plum) to the top of the nori wrapped triangle before setting it with the others.
“Relax babe, it’s not a competition. I’m here to help you, remember?” He wipes his hands clean before dipping it into the bowl of water and tends to your minor setback. He places a hand under yours that’s supporting the rice and the other over the crumbling pieces to salvage the situation. “You just needed to wet your hands again. That’s why the rice is being stubborn.”
“Okay, I think I’ve got it now. Thanks babe.”
“Alright, no problem.” He mumbles, retracting his hands away from you and stands on the sidelines until you need him again. He thought the expressions you make when you’re concentrating are positively adorable―from the doubtful frowning and optimistic lip biting as you hold the rice between your palms until a triangle forms. (You’re probably the cutest onigiri maker he knows). And when it finally takes shape after a couple of moments, you beam at him in blissful happiness with a display of the perfect onigiri cradled in your hands.
“See? I knew you could do it. Good job, I’m proud of you sweetheart.”

―BOKUTO: Morning Bokuto has two moods where he’s either an old romantic sappy fool kissing you awake or he’s a huge lump of sleepy that’s suuuper resistant to getting up―there’s no in between with him and the latter is the common occurrence. You can expect lots of pouting and “Noooo”s and “Mmffghl, wanna sleeeeep go ‘way” as he waves a feckless arm in the air. When he feels the bed shifting he suddenly regrets his words and draws you back in with a gentle tug and wraps his arms around you mumbling “Just 5 more minutes, please?” as he liters sweet kisses across your shoulder.
―ATSUMU: He’s not one to believe in the social construction of “The One” but you’re pretty damn close to what people dream about what their forever with someone they love would look like. From the disheveled hair to the overwhelming t-shirt (his) that’s too big for your frame, and how you would stretch and let out the tiniest and cutest squeak as you exhale then reach over just to touch him. And through the sweetest smile with crinkled eyes you murmur a “Good morning, baby. You sleep okay?” His face softens because if this is what yours and his forever would look like then he cannot wait to start the countdown.
―USHIJIMA: He learns that there’s beauty in serenity as he watches you catch two more minutes of sleep before his alarm sounds and he starts his morning routine. Sunlight starts to peek through the windows and something warm and comforting stirs inside him. He doesn’t realize how intimate the view is―how it’s just you and him in bed together with no concepts of secrets to hide. He kisses your forehead and you answer with an affectionate hum. “Good morning, I’ll be back soon” disrupts the stillness of the house and then he’s off to start his day.
―IWAIZUMI: You and him have had sleepovers in high school before but it’s different when you’re both curled up together in his new bed and new apartment that he worked his ass off for. Leaving you a copy of your own key because he said it wouldn’t be home without you around (this is how he asked you to move in with him). He usually has to get up earlier and start his day before you, but he loves leaning over your shoulder to kiss your cheek and how you would burrow back against him with the cutest smile. Without a doubt, he can’t imagine a more perfect morning.

―AKAASHI: You can’t tell him “I love you” without your eyes becoming crescent moons and dimples crinkling, and it causes his heart to do a semblance of somersaults from the gesture alone. He shares your smile but he can never match the warm glow emanating from your pretty face, but he reciprocates your love and deep affection with a romantic kiss and an “I love you too.” His favorite part is that he can even hear your smile when you tell him you love him over the phone, and it sets his mood for the rest of the day.
―TSUKISHIMA: He says that cuddling while sleeping isn’t his thing because it gets too hot and uncomfortable, but here is where he’s wrong. He realizes that waking up to your arms wrapped around him from behind is no greater bliss―the warmth and bit of pressure as you’re leaned against his back throws him into a tumult of halcyon mornings. This is also where he discovers his preference for being the smaller spoon, but he’ll never admit that to you.
―BOKUTO: You made him a “50 things I love about you” scrapbook with cute photos taken together over the years lined with meaningful captions. Not even through the first page and he can’t hold back the tears that’s obscuring his vision. He’s sobbing at this point and you have to comfort him with gentle head pats as he’s hugging your middle. And through incoherent spews he’s mumbling “I love you so much” “What did I do to deserve such an angel?” and “You’re the best thing that’s ever happened to me.”
―ATSUMU: The one thing that consistently gets him putty is when you’re playing with his hair or giving him a head massage. He’ll rest his head on your lap just to feel your fingers smooth through his tendrils and drift sound asleep in his favorite spot. (Yes, you’re his favorite place to sleep on). You once tested a theory if he’d do anything if you suddenly stopped and pulled your hand away in the middle of it, and he deadass grabbed your hand and moved it back to his head so you could continue petting him. Tsumu is indeed a dog.
―OSAMU: Working in the food service industry can be grueling especially when it comes to dealing with nasty customers being unreasonable, but you always try to help him get through the day by sneaking little notes into his clothes or apron. Things like “A little reminder that I love you” “Chin up, baby ♡” and “Counting the minutes until I see you again” adds another reason to the growing list of why he loves you, and he collects all of your handwritten notes and safely tucks it away in a small keepsake box.
Can I have headcannons for Alisa, Osamu, and Daichi with a s/o who’s really touch starved but doesn’t want to bother them so they just kind of sit there and pout while they wait for affection. Sidenote- I hope you’re having a good day! 😁

―ALISA: The moment she notices you pouting, she’s scurrying to your side to assess the situation. Did you have a bad day? Something happen to make you upset? What can she do to make you feel better? She’s very caring and attentive towards you (sometimes to a fault), but wouldn’t be able to narrow it down to you needing affection unless you directly tell her. Once she understands the problem, she’s spreading her arms to welcome you in a loving embrace and assures you that you can always bother her whenever you need something.
―OSAMU: He can immediately feel the weight of your pout while you’re situated on the couch, and he’s busy answering catering inquires from across the room. He shoots you a glance and his mouth curves into something resembling a smirk. “Uh-oh, baby wants the cuddles?” He teases, and you answer by accentuating your pout with a cute nod. He emanates a soft chuckle, finishing up any last piece of business and closes his laptop with a newfound purpose to smother you with his unconditional love and sweet affection. “Be careful what you wish for.”
―DAICHI: He could sense that something’s wrong and assumes that he’d done something to upset you. He carefully retraces back his entire day to identify the problem. Did he forget to cap the toothpaste back on? Leave the toilet seat up again...? Or could it be the time of the month? He’s seriously sweating over the small stuff here, so please give him some relief and tell him you just want some affection and you’re not mad at him 🥺 You can see him physically relax and laugh it off because he thought he was in trouble, then proceeds to give you smooches and cuddles for the rest of the night <3
