white ppl on this site are such fucking crybabies its so pathetic. when poc make posts talking about how a piece of media has used xyz stereotype against their culture and use their own personal experiences as a member of that group to show how its harmful they are not saying everyone is forbidden from ever enjoying that media again. they are not trying to cancel it (because cancel culture isn’t even fucking real.) literally all we’re asking for is for you to listen to what we have to say and take it into account to prevent future media from being hurtful like this again. just because your favorite tv show/movie/book/whatever has problematic elements does not mean it has to be shunned or that you aren’t allowed to like it. i’m so sick of white ppl victimizing themselves saying we’re ruining their childhoods by pointing out fucking racism.
it’s extremely weird knowing that most people probably don’t like, actively and aggressively hate trans women but pretty much everyone has been exposed to enormous amounts of transmisogynistic ideas and think pieces in main stream media that proposes all these ideas, states lots of false claims as fact, and begs questions about the material and existential threat the existence of trans women pose.
like there are tonnes of people that are able to see that this stuff is coming from a place of bigotry, but they’re still passively absorbing this messaging and, unless they are actively seeking it out, are never exposed to anything that challenges that messaging in any specific way.
so you get a lot of people who are generally supportive of trans women and trans rights, but still have been primed to having these leading questions and ideas sitting in the back of their mind, never really thinking about or understanding the realities that trans women face, waiting for some single experience to trigger their confirmation bias. a kind of background mental process that one is not aware of, a vigilance that says “ok, those messages are bigoted but what if there’s some element of truth, it’s better to be on the lookout just in case” coz no one got eaten by the tiger they thought was there but wasn’t, but plenty got eaten by the tiger they didn’t think was there.
and so you know this is a general phenomenon that most “accepting” people are unaware of, but you don’t know how affected any given person is or how much of it is responsible for your negative experiences like how much of this is paranoia and how much is reality, and when it’s just kind of permeating the atmosphere so you can’t see it or point to it.
also you can’t talk about it or bring it up because that generally makes it worse, like how dare you tell someone who has been so accepting that they still have some transmisogynistic biases. that’s you telling someone who is good that they are actually bad and nothing evokes a defensive response like that, and nothing makes them see you as never being satisfied and so angry all the time and maybe that’s a holdover from your male socialisation and that this attitude is in fact coming from a place of entitlement and masculine aggression.
you definitely can’t point out the small little acts of aggression and bias because they are so very small, as singular events they are plausibly deniable and it’s only your personal perspective that sees those little things as part of a larger trend of behaviour and attitudes which you can’t really prove or explain to someone that doesn’t experience it, and even some other trans women have normalised that experience that they just accept that’s the way things are and you’re just bringing problems onto your self by raging (talking) about these things.
and the thing about all of it is, is that there’s basically nothing you can do about it. you can develop a thick skin, basically err on the side of I’m just being paranoid not because that’s necessarily true but because the alternative will literally drive you insane, which is extra fun if you, like many trans women, have experienced a great deal of personal trauma that has caused some kind of stress disorder. you can just practice being extremely patient, practice letting things go, practice speaking about issues only ever in the abstract and with very carefully chosen calm and polite words that treat the topic as an academic and intellectual exercise rather than your actual life (though not too academic lest you be condescending or abstruse).
but on the whole, you can’t change people’s thoughts and internalised messages or even know them. you can never fully trust anyone save for, if you are lucky, a select few people who will most likely be others with similar experiences.
I can't thank op enough for this post. It perfectly sums up why I've been so uncomfortable with people outside of my closest inner circle since coming out.
trans women have the final word on what is or isn’t transmisogyny, and while we’re not a monolith a good rule is that if offends one trans woman and you’re not a trans woman you shouldn’t be looking for validation to keep doing whatever it is you’re doing
im sorry i have to point this out but TWERFs are smart. keep reading. they intentionally employ tactics that they know will get people to switch to their side.
they know how to argue people in. they were argued in. they know about nontransfemnine people’s latent transmisogyny and they know that we are not as vigilant as we should be. they make popular posts.
they are undercover. they pretend to be allies. there are nonbinary TWERFs and TWERFs that are WOC. keep reading. these people have been coerced in and know how to coerce others in. there are many different ways, and there are many different things to look out for.
when i say don’t argue with TWERFs, when i say ignore them and don’t give them a platform in the first place, it’s not a giving up tactic. it’s because TWERFs know that if they can point out one tiny flaw in your logic, or spout some bullshit that some nontransfeminine person has thought about before, they’ve hooked someone.
TWERFs count on preying on the young and impressionable, the people that don’t know or talk to transfeminine people. this has to be pointed out. the only reason i know this is because i am not transfeminine and i have seen many of my peers, not transfeminine, fall to them.
stop arguing that they’re stupid. don’t let your guard down.
EDIT: and they are only one specific type of transmisogyny so watch yourself
I feel like it’s pertinent to explicitly say, although OP touched on it:
When TERFs “debate” you, the purpose is not to convert YOU to their ideology. The purpose is to change the mind of onlookers. Even if you are 100% confident in the necessity of maintaining an alliance with trans women, there is at least one of your followers who is NOT.
Don’t debate TERFs. Don’t boost their ideology. Don’t let them misconstrue your words and thereby paint you (and, by extension, the entirety of the transfeminine populace) as ridiculous.
It’s so much more important to make space (on you blog, but more importantly, offline) for the voices of trans women. Share the writings of trans female thinkers. Listen to trans women. Talk to trans women. You might just make some friends in the process.

A giant salamander emerged from Kyoto’s Kamogawa on July 4, 2014, following torrential rains that flooded the river.
Four years later to the date, it returned.
Have you ever heard of a Chinese Giant Salamander? Me neither til today. A regular ol’ spotted salamander usually weighs less than an ounce. A Chinese Giant Salamander, however, can weigh up to 66 pounds. Due to disruption of habitat populations of these magnificent beasts has dropped by an estimate 80% since the 1950s.
This is now a giant salamander appreciation blog
