Yes, I deserve a spring–I owe nobody nothing.
Virginia Woolf, A Writer’s Diary (via hehmionee)
MAIREAD :
“I don’t think I’d ever marry for money,” Mairead said. “Stability, perhaps, but never money…My mam would like me to marry for money, and land too, but those days are gone, aren’t they?”
“Stability’s overrated,” or at least that kind of stability was in her opinion. “If you ever marry let it be for love, although I’m finding the spinster life quite agreeable.”
“What a woman! Oh what a woman!”

MAIREAD :
“He doesn’t seem too nice, if he published that about you,” Mairead remarked, plucking the paper back out of Irene’s hands.
“He wasn’t,” said Irene flatly, “but he was rich and powerful and I was too, though to a lesser extent. As far as most people were concerned that’s all you need for a successful marriage. Must work for some people, I suppose.”

“Terribly disappointing I’m sure. But why not travel again? Brazil is delightful this time of year, or at the very least there’s always the rest of Europe.”
MAIREAD :
"He’s got no right to do that,” Mairead said, wrinkling her nose in disgust as Irene read on. “Who broke off the engagement, if you don’t mind my curiosity?”
“I did.”
For a moment her voice is low, genuine, and her lips a thin line. It made her seem a lot older than she was, and offered a small glimpse of something deeper. Only for a second though before her voice was light again and a smile dancing on her features.
“He was a dreadful bore.”

"I particularly enjoyed the bit where he called me a singer faded into obscurity.”
Irene’s tone is light and unconcerned, but her eyes are hard. That the Right Honorable Ralph King saw fit to slander her in the press was quite interesting really, but the attack at her old career seemed a little below the belt. His insistence on treating her as if she had been some small club singer and not a prima donna opera singer was really quite infuriating. Clearly news of their broken engagement had finally found their way past his private estate and into the world of government scandal. She picked the paper up from where Mairead had thrown it, reading allowed.
"Miss Adler was no more than a youthful impulse, one which I now highly regret. That our engagement could not last was entirely her doing for she had an incurable greed and lusted after both riches and other men. I feel that our marriage would have been a foolish and regretful decisions- Well, at least that rings true.”
She folded the paper neatly before placing it down but her attempt at a smile became more of a grimace. They did say that hell hath no fury like a women scorned, a saying which she was quite determined to give truth.
"Old Ralphy must really be struggling with his career if he’s taken to attack me in print now.”
MEG :
“Oh, I believe you, don’t you worry.”
That’s another thing men demanded. Not only your love, but one’s life commitment. Meg had once wanted nothing more but to be happily married. Her mother was proof that she could remain in a happy marriage and dance, but ever since the first man in her bed, Meg had promised herself otherwise. Marriage how she intended was never a possibility and so she’d never marry.
Throwing a nightgown over her, Meg turned to face the woman again, taking a seat and removing feet from shoes that rubbed them raw. “I think we can both agree the richer the man, the more ridiculous they are. I had a duke take me for dinner once; he continually reminded me how much money had had. It was rather tiresome.”
That made her laugh and she turned to face Meg with a genuine smile on her features. There were many people who would describe Irene as cold, indifferent, cruel even; most of those people were men. Of course she did have a habit of exploiting their interest in her and robbing them blind, but they never had anything coming to them that they didn’t deserve. Perhaps if they had learned to treat her with a little more civility her life may have panned out differently, she might have been married not after all. As it was she had learned long ago that men would never see her as anything more than a piece of meat with a good singing voice. More fool them really.
“What a bore. between me and you, I wouldn’t be surprised if he was overcompensating for something. Was he a short man?”
MAIREAD :
Mairead hesitated before replying.
Did she dare to reveal the identity of the man following her, and in turn reveal her own purpose here to a total stranger?
“Between you and me,” she finally said, “I don’t think he’s "an old creep,” as you say. I think he’s British Secret Service…y'know.“
“Is that so?”
Well, she’d certainly heard stranger. Weather the girl was telling the truth or not wasn’t really Irene’s concern but she thought it apt to assume that she was, for the time being. After all if the man really was secret service that put her in a somewhat compromising situation too. He had been following Mairead though, and not her, which put her mind at ease a little. If they were really onto her less respectable career path they no doubt would have arrested her by now anyway. Once again she gave the girls arm a slight comforting squeeze.
“Then we’ll just have to do what we can to lose him won’t we? I’m Irene, by the way.”
