âOh? What book is that?â Titania asked curiously.Â
âGart has a book on fairies heâs been reading,â Rosella explained, a loving smile on her face as she rubbed her sonâs shoulder. âIn preparation for the visit. Though he was still bursting with questions last night. Iâm surprised you got any sleep, sweetheart.âÂ
Not that Rosella blamed him â her own curiosity about Etheria landed her into quite the mess, and her excitement certainly always got the better of her whenever a visit came up,before she and Edgar married. Honestly, it surprised her that it didnât take terribly long convincing Gart to go to sleep the previous night, though she supposed excitement for the morning to hurry up helped with that.
âWell, of course weâll make sure you get to see all the sights while youâre here, son,â Oberon promised before finally removing his hand from Gartâs other shoulder. âEtheria is always thriving â always plenty to see, regardless of how long itâs been since your last visit. And I think youâll find it better than anything you find in that book.âÂ
âAlthough, if youâve taken after your mother at all, I may just have to let you run free in the library for a while, too,â Titania suggested. âI think you were a bit too young last time to hold much interest in it, but you may enjoy it more this time around.âÂ
âYou have a library?â Gart said, intrigued. Out of all the questions he had thought of the night before, he had never questioned what fairies would like to read about.
âI wanna see!â he pleaded, bringing the best puppy eyed look he could. Excited, he took his grandmotherâs hand and tried to pull her along to usher her into showing him the way. He was practically bouncing with her, ready to assault her with questions heâd been holding in. Like âWhatâs your favorite place in Etheriaâ or âHow old are you really?â.
There was so much to see, where would they even start?

Rosella couldnât help giggling lightly at the way her son squeaked his âthank youâ. He did seem rather overwhelmed by everything, but honestly, Rosella understood that perfectly, as she felt much the same during her visit. Once she got to the sight-seeing bit, anyway â the initial part of her visit didnât leave much opportunity for appreciating the beauty of it all considering sheâd been rather focused on not letting the entire realm get blown up.
Gartâs sudden exclamation grabbed the womanâs attention, and her gaze shifted down to the little prince. âNot to worry, Your Highness. Our guards always take the utmost care, but should anything happen with your belongings on the way to your rooms, Iâm sure itâs nothing a little magic caât fix,â she assured him with a polite bow.
âSorry, weâve had a few mishaps at home with some of his things getting broken,â Rosella explained. âBut thank you, we do appreciate the assurances.â
After a couple of guards were grabbed so they could handle the luggage, the woman led them up the steps into the castle. Towering, ivory columns lined the side walls, where numerous openings let the sunlight stream in and opened the castle to the landâs beautiful views. Chandeliers dangled from the ceiling, although they werenât currently lit, as the outside lighting brightened the castle more than enough. The group followed along, feet trailing over the gold and burgundy coloured rug that lined the trail into the throne room.
Etheria Castleâs throne room looked just as magnificent as the entrance of the castle, and the sunlight made the pearlescent thrones and gilded designs on the marble floors gleam brightly. Oberon and Titania sat in those thrones, but stood immediately at the entrance and announcement of their son and his familyâs arrival.
âWeâre so glad to see youâve made it. Weâve missed you all so much,â Titania said, a soft smile on her lips as she embraced her son tightly, followed by Rosella.
When she reached Gart, Titaniaâs smile brightened further. She knelt down, a green hand reaching out to cup his cheek. âAnd Gartholomew, itâs /so good/ to see you again. Youâre growing into such a handsome, young man.â Titania leaned forward and kissed his cheek before she stood again.
Oberon, too, took his turn greeting them all, albeit with briefer hugs. âItâs been far too long since weâve seen you,â Oberon said, clapping a hand over Gartâs shoulder. Unlike the green or pink of Titania or the maid who escorted them in, Oberonâs skin was the same cream tone as Edgarâs. âI trust you all had no problems getting here?â
Rosella shook her head. âNot at all. We were on our way as quickly as we could. Gartâs been so excited to get here, I think he was ready to leave before Edgar and I even woke up,â she said with a laugh, smiling down at her son.
As Gart immediately took note, this Grandma and Grandpa were so very different from Graham and Valanice. The two of them, and even their castle, looked like something from his book but even grander. Like someone that couldnât be real, and yet here he was as their grandson.Â
Gart was at a complete loss for words, yet again. He wondered if the whole trip would be like this. He look up at his father, who always just looked like a âdadâ to him. These were his parents? It almost felt hard to believe.
It was easy to tell that Oberon was massive and powerful, and him clapping his giant hand on Gartâs tiny shoulders almost knocked the boy off his feet. He was impressive, to say the least. Then there was Titantia. The green skin was a surprise, but she looked every bit as elegant, gentle, and wise as Valanice.Â
âI wanted to see if Etheria was anything like my book.â Gart admitted, recalling his fairy tale book. Of course now that he was thinking about it, even with all the nights he had spent reading it he still felt unprepared for everything he had seen.Â
daventryrose:
Rosella and Edgar both gave Gart one last goodnight kiss, and Rosella lingered a moment to tuck him in a little more before she stood, herself. Blowing out the candles on their way out, they left the young prince to sleep while they headed for their own bed.Â
The next morning moved swiftly. After an early start, the three shared breakfast with Graham and Valanice, then bade their pre-trip farewells. They wouldnât be gone so long as some of their family adventures, but Rosella always missed her parents and the kingdom when they left. With the help of some of the royal guards, the family got their luggage carried out into the throne room, stacking it in front of the magic mirror. (Rosella, of course, gave all those guards a stern talking to beforehand about taking care with the luggage â just in case.)
It didnât take long before the mirrorâs surface fogged and distorted, then formed into a clear image of Etheria, the vibrant colours of the leaves and grass standing out even with the way the clouds misted over them. Rosella didnât fully understand how this part worked â only that Oberon and Titania opened some magical pathway that allowed Edgar to do his part in providing the magic that led them through, the magic mirror serving as their portal. Both Rosella and Edgar kept a tight hold on either of Gartâs hands as a strange, pulling sensation came over them. The throne room around them dimmed, rapidly fading into blackness. Just as quickly as it vanished, the world around them brightened again, and the image they saw in the mirror surrounded them instead. They stood before a massive, pure white castle, its walls shimmering in the late morning sun. The colourful plant life around them swayed back and forth in the breeze, stronger from the altitude up here.Â
âWell, here we are, Gart,â Rosella announced, grinning down at her son. âAre you ready to go see your grandparents?âÂ
As she spoke, a group of brightly coloured dragonettes drifted about them, circling them and fluttering their wings against their faces, a gentle, sweet tune emanating from them. Rosella let out a small giggle as one tickled at her nose.Â
âPrince Edgar! We are so glad to see you and your family made it!â A woman approached them with a bright grin â an airy, white gown hung about her pink skin, and her golden hair was tied back at the nape of her neck. Rosella recognized her as one of the staff in the Etherian castle. As she stopped in front of them, she bowed her head in turn for Rosella and Gart, as well. âPrincess Rosella, you are looking lovely as ever. And Prince Gartholomew â my, how youâve grown!â
She and Edgar shared a few words in greeting, before the woman took note of the stacked luggage that had appeared along with them. âIâll have a couple of the guards come and retrieve your luggage and get them situated in your rooms. In the meantime, why donât we go and pay the King and Queen a visit? King Oberon and Queen Titania have been so excited for your arrival!â
Gart was awake before the rest of his family and the first at the breakfast table, whining that everyone else was simply too slow. Once they bid goodbye to Graham and Valanice, Gart went to spy on the knights to ensure everything they had packed was handled with care.Â
Then came the magic mirror. He had always liked it when his father used magic, and this spell was new to him. He felt his parents clasp their hands tightly around his own as a magic sensation he had never felt before pulled him through. Gart shut his eyes tight until the sensation stopped.
Gart was in quiet awe the moment he opened his eyes again. The bright colors and all sorts of strange creatures that lived and breathed magic were all around. The little dragonettes flitted around them, zipping just out of the little princeâs reach and by his motherâs nose. He almost didnât hear his motherâs question.
âUh-huh.â He answered, still distracted by the new world.
When the woman arrived, and Gart suddenly felt bashful as she complimented him. He squeaked a tiny âthank youâ, which only made him felt sillier. He listened to the adults talk for a bit, and wondered if everyone here looked as elegant as she did. His mind wandered to his grandparents. His memories were still fuzzy, and he couldnât remember their faces. Once he heard the luggage being mentioned he snapped back to attention.
âBe careful with them!â Gart pleaded with the woman. The knights had finally done a decent job loading everything, and Gart thought it would be a shame if all the effort went to waste here.
(i swear i havenât forgotten/lost enthusiasm about my drafts, iâll get to them soon!)

Edgar grinned as his son hugged him, and returned it with a loving squeeze. Hearing Gart ask for more of the story of his and Rosellaâs meeting didnât surprise him â the subject came up now and again during their Etheria visits, and Gart was definitely getting old enough to ask about how his parents met.Â
âWell, sounds like weâre going to have to tell you those stories soon, wonât we? Though I think theyâre a bit too long to tell tonight.â He gave Gart a sympathetic look when he saw the pout on his face. âTell you what, though: when we get to Etheria tomorrow, weâll tell you the whole story, and weâll get Grandma and Grandpa to help tell it, too. I think theyâd like to chime in on the ending.âÂ
Rosella nodded in agreement and lightly rubbed her husbandâs arm. âThat sounds like a wonderful idea. And then, if youâre up for more stories after that, we can tell you all about the first time we met, too.
âBut for now, you really should get to sleep, sweetheart. We all do, otherwise weâll be too tired to go and see all the sights tomorrow! And we wouldnât want that, now would we?â She really wouldnât mind all three of them curling up in bed and sharing the story now, but unfortunately, they did have to sleep.
âOkaayyyyyyy...â Gart finally gave in, but the pout stayed on his face.
He laid down his head against his pillows, bidding his parents good night one last time before they blew out the candles and left him to sleep.Â
He tried to sleep, he honestly did, but all the images and possibilities of what heâd see tomorrow were too exciting. To think, part of him came from such a magical sounding place. He wanted to see all the different creatures that lived that and see some magic for himself. Heâd seen his Uncle Alexander perform a little bit of magic, but he bet it was nothing compared to what his grandparents could do.Â
daventryrose:
âYou might remember more than you think once we get there. The sights may help jog your memory,â Rosella pointed out. Etheria was a place difficult to forget, so she wouldnât doubt it if it felt at least slightly more familiar for her son once they arrived in the morning.
She couldnât help chuckling a little as he yawned, although she gave a yawn of her own, too. After all the travel preparations today, she really did feel tired. They all needed sleep soon.
âYes, again,â Rosella confirmed, laughing lightly. Oh, she would definitely have to tell him the whole story soon. Or rather stories. âThose are both far longer stories than we have time for tonight, unfortunately. But I can assure you theyâre exciting ones. I saved your father from an evil witch, and your great aunt Malicia. Your Grandma Valanice and I saved all of Etheria and Eldridge, actually.
âBut we all need to get a good nightâs rest. We have a long day tomorrow. Maybe your father and I can both tell you those stories while weâre in Etheria.â
Just as she finished speaking, a gentle knock sounded on the door, and Edgar poked his head in after a moment. A smile formed on his lips as he entered.
"Oh, good. Youâre still awake. I was afraid I wouldnât make it in time to say goodnight.â He closed the door softly behind him and made his way over to the bed, pausing at the bedside so he could place a kiss to Gartâs forehead. âGrandma and Grandpa wanted to say goodnight as well, and that they love you. Are you excited for the trip tomorrow?â
âFather!â Gart cried, his energy suddenly returning once he saw Edgar. He gave his father a hug as he leaned down to give his son a good night kiss.
âYes, Iâm excited! Mother was just telling me what Grandma, Grandpa, and Etheria are like. And how you met for the second time! I want to know more!â Â
The impatient prince beamed, thinking heâd get answers now instead of later, but yawn betrayed him. But he was dying to learn every little bit of information he could.
âI donât remember anything, except that itâs all cloudy and magical over there.â He pouted insistently.Â
daventryrose
Rosella gave him an understanding smile. As young as he was, she really didnât expect him to remember much about Etheria. She and Edgar both hoped he would get a little more out of the visits, though, now that he was getting a little older. Etheria was part of who he was, too, after all.Â
âOh, Iâm sure youâll remember them a little better when you see them again,â she assured him. âBut theyâre lovely people. Very powerful and well respected, but theyâre also kind and gentle. Theyâve always been so happy whenever we bring you to visit. I know they must be overjoyed getting to see you grow up, since they never got that chance with your father.
âIf you canât remember what the place itself looks like, youâre going to love it when we get there.â She let out a light laugh â she could already picture the pure awe on her sonâs face when they arrived.Â
âYou at least remember that itâs a kingdom in the clouds, right? Out of all the places Iâve been, itâs still the most beautiful Iâve ever seen. Itâs filled with the purest, white clouds, flying swans, and the most charming creatures. And the sunrises and sunsets are incredible when you can see them from up in the sky.â Even as many times as she went there now, its beauty never failed in astounding her. âIâve never stopped loving to see all the sights there. In fact, if I hadnât been so eager to see them in the first place, I might never have met your father again.âÂ
Gart listened intently to his mother, trying to unearth the fuzzy memories of his times in Etheria but to no avail. It sounded like such a majestic place he couldnât believe he had no clear memories of it, despite the fact he was so small at the time.
âI do remember that itâs a cloudy fairy kingdom, but thatâs about it.â he recalled, but only from piecing together things his parents had told him. But the mental image Rosella was painting for him had him excited for the morning. His father had already told him that some powerful beings, his grandparents included, that dwelled there. What would they think of him, a little half-fairy?
âMet Dad again?â he asked, before yawning. The lateness of the evening was finally catching up with him, excitement could only hold him off for so long. He rubbed his eye and tried to look awake. âI want to hear more!â

Rosella smiled as she found her son already in bed, with a book sitting at the foot of it. He really did take after her a great deal. She walked further into the room and sat herself beside Gart, wrapping an arm around him.Â
âYes, Iâll have to have a word with the guards before they handle our luggage. A few things of mine wound up a little banged up last time, too. Iâd rather not deal with anything worse,â she said with a small sigh. The last trip they all took, one of her books had gotten jostled around so much all the pages wound up horribly bent, and sheâd suffered a cracked lute before, too.
As Gart picked up the book, Rosella glanced down at it curiously. A book on faeries, it looked like. It didnât surprise her, considering they were headed for Etheria. Though she and Edgar would have loved teaching him more about his fatherâs realm, there was so much to teach him about Daventry that there wasnât time for much in his lessons.Â
âDoing a little reading on Dadâs side of the family, I see?â The pages of the book looked filled with dog-ears, and Rosella couldnât suppress a tiny chuckle at the sight. In her youth, she often gave books the same treatment when she started reading up on a topic that really interested her, or else she marked all her favourite scenes of written plays and stories.Â
âIâll make sure we get the book into your bags before we all head to bed. But you know, you can just ask your father and I any questions you have, too.â
The little prince grinned at his motherâs reassurance. There was a little joy whenever his mother agreed with his concerns and requests, like they had the same thoughts.
In truth, the rip to the world of fairies had been the only thing on Gartâs mind for days now. He had too many questions to even know where to being. And now he was too impatient to wait for the morning, and far too curious to sleep.
âWell...I donât remember anything about my grandparents or the place they come from. What are they all going to be like?â
daventryrose:
@princegart·
After a full day of packing and last minute preparations before her, Edgar, and Gartâs trip to Etheria, Rosella felt exhausted. It felt as if the packing never ended (although, she hadnât really needed the last three bags, but they were all items they might need and she found them necessary anyway), and she and Edgar had their own duties around the castle to take care of before leaving. Not to mention the various conversations with Oberon and Titania throughout the day just to ensure they had the plans properly sorted out, all of which had them bustling to and from the kingdomâs magic mirror in the throne room several times.Â
Rosella thanked the Shining Stars that Eldridge existed in its own realm, as it cut out the need for an unnecessarily long and uneventful sea voyage or a seemingly endless ride shoved into the back of a carriage. Traveling via magic was far more pleasant than that.
As night fell over the castle, it seemed things finally settled down. They got Gartâs luggage packed and stacked by his door earlier, and she and Edgar got their own finished up just after dinner. Before bed, however, Edgar decided to make contact with his parents one last time today to confirm they were all prepped for the following morning. Rosella remained in front of the mirror for a few minutes so she could bid her in-laws goodnight and express her excitement over tomorrowâs trip, but excused herself after that so she could check on Gart, with Edgar promising to join her after he finished up.Â
Rosella let out a yawn as she headed for her sonâs room. As she reached it, she gave a few, short knocks before she slowly opened the door and peeked inside.Â
âHi, sweetheart.âÂ
Entering the room, she softly closed the door behind her before seating herself on the edge of her sonâs bed. âYour fatherâs just finishing up with your grandparents right now, but heâll be in to say goodnight in a bit. I just wanted to come check on you a little earlier, make sure youâre all ready for tomorrow. Your grandparents canât wait to see you again, so weâre going to have an early start tomorrow when they send for us.âÂ
Gart was already in bed when his mother came in, sitting with his knees up and held against his chest. He was deep in thought, and didnât notice Rosella had entered right away. But a moment later he snapped back to reality and smiled when he saw her.
âHello Mother!âÂ
The younger lad, only about 8 years old, tried to keep his mind focused on what his mother was telling him. However, his mind was preoccupied. At the foot of his bed was a little leather bound book with a fairy printed onto it, the pages all read through and some of them dog-eared to go back to at a later time. He didnât know much about the kingdom his father hailed from, other than that is was a realm for fairies and powerful magic. It definitely captured the curiosity of the boy, but the book honestly offered little else other than selection of fairy tales.
âI think Iâm ready to go.â he finally responded. âI just hope the knights handle my suitcases carefully tomorrow. I donât want my things getting broken.â he said huffly. Like his mother Gart had a tendency to over pack, and Kyle had once dropped one of his bags resulting in a toy being crushed. Gart never forgot about it.Â
âI think I want to pack this too." Gart added while picking up the fairy book from his bed.Â
