After years of going through phases of making my gifs by either importing video clips or loading screencap files into a stack, I learned about the image sequence method and now I will never go back, so I'm here to share it! It's a simple change that can save a lot of time :)

After downloading your video, you need to make your screencaps. I use MPV Player - if you don't know how to screencap, I recommend this tutorial on installing, configuring and using MPV (and this one for installing on a pc). You can also check my gifmaking tag for various other tutorials including different screencapping methods/software.

Once you've made your screencaps, move them to their own folder. You will need an individual folder for each gif/import! I put them in a "screencaps" folder and within that label each sub-folder however works for what I'm making.

Open Photoshop and open (ctrl+o) the way you would any image. Find the folder with the screencaps you want and select the first image (technically I think selecting any of them works, but I always do the first) then tick the Image Sequence button in the bottom corner, then open:

4. You will then get a pop-up to set the frame rate - these are my settings and after setting it once it should save it for future, so then you can just click OK each time:

5. This will instantly open your gif in timeline mode with your gif made! I then just click where it says Video Group 1 in the layers panel and Convert for Smart Filters so that it can be edited easily (I actually have this step saved as part of an action to make it even quicker). It should then look like this:

And that's it! You can go ahead and do all your editing like normal. I find Photoshop runs quicker this way (especially when making several gifs at once) since it's essentially just linking to the file location instead of importing it all into PS!

It is important to note that if you delete the screencaps, your gif will no longer work. You can relink the file if you need to move the folder (when you reopen the gif it will prompt you to relink so you just find the new folder location and again select the first screencap in the sequence), but you have to be aware that if you want to delete your screencaps after finishing the gifs you won't be able to go back in and edit/resave them without redoing the screencaps.

omg not at all! I use settings mixed together by two of my favourite users @fadeintoyou1993 & @the-borgias <3!!!

Depending on the quality of the gif (if it's 1080p or 4k!) I will change the settings but honestly you can mess around with them until you feel like your gif looks how you want it too!! That's what I do anyways!! <3 I'm going to show you the different settings I use for BOTH types!

Starting with Swann in Anatomy of a Fall!

So with our gif all set up and ready to go we're going to sharpen it! Depending on the quality I use two types of settings, 500 x 3.0 OR 500 x 4.0.

You can probably see that 0.4 is a bit too sharp, so we're going to choose 0.3 for now!! <3 We're going to add another sharpen on top, this time it's going to be 10 x 10.

Now, this is where I fiddle around a bit!! So I usually either use Camera Raw filter OR High Pass! Sometimes I do use both! It depends on the gif itself. I'm going to show pictures with one or the other and then both! <3 I follow the settings in @the-borgias sharpening tutorial for the Camera Raw Filter (HERE.) I just decide which one looks better and fiddle! And for my High Pass my settings are always 0.4 and then I change it to Soft Light.

And that's it!!

yes, hi!!! so, for this gifset from the pitt, i can walk you through my process on capturing footage and coloring, but if what you're struggling with is quality, the most important part is the file and definition of the footage you're working with.

i personally almost exclusively use 1080p footage with a decent file size. a file can be HD and still vary in size from a couple hundred megabytes to several gigabytes. this will also depend on the length of the episodes (half-hour episodes vs. an hour-plus). since we're talking specifically about my gifs of the pitt, my DLs of the episodes are all in the 2-3.5gb range, give or take.

i know there are gifmakers that swear by 4k footage and i certainly won't deny that gifs made from 4k files are stunning, but i've already spent a lot of money on external hard drives and don't have the space to spare for the frankly massive sizes of 4k movies and tv. besides, most 1080p quality gifs turn out perfectly well!

below the cut, i'll show you how i capture, gif, and color scenes from the pitt like this:

note: this tutorial is beginner-oriented!

step 1a: once you obtain your file (this is not a piracy tutorial lmao, but if you google "piracy reddit" you can find a lot of reputable suggestions for sites to peruse), it's time to screencap or clip the scene(s) you want to gif. i would say that, from what i've seen, most gifmakers use screencaps, but i highly prefer taking short video clips (which i keep and usually label for future use/reference), so i'll be showing you that version. if you would prefer to screencap, please check the "beginner tutorials" tag on my resource blog @gifmakerresource

step 1b. i only use windows pcs, so i can't give any specialized info regarding macs, just as a disclaimer. i use the program VLC Media Player, both for clipping scenes and as my regular media player on both my laptop and my desktop. to initially set up vlc's recording capabilities, i used this website (please just ignore all their annoying advertising for movavi).

step 1c. now that vlc is set up to record footage played through it, i open my video clip (ctrl+o) and navigate to the scene i ultimately want to gif. i typically recommend recording an extra 5-10 seconds before and after the clip, especially if you need to convert the clip afterwards.

step 1d (optional). depending on the file format of your episode, you may need to convert the clips you take before photoshop will accept them. for example, a vast majority of the files i download are mkv files, but photoshop works best with mp4 files. for this, i use another program called HandBrake. once downloaded, i add whatever file(s) i need to convert, select the appropriate preset (which is almost always "Super HQ 1080p30 Surround" to maintain as much of the original quality as possible). you can select where the converted files automatically save for organization purposes, just like with vlc.

step 2. now that we have the clip we want to turn into a gif, it's time to bring it into photoshop. to do so, select file -> import video frames to layers. once you select your video clip, photoshop will pop up with a little media player with a few controls. here's what that looks like:

the box on the left that i've highlighted is what you'll adjust depending on whether you want to load in the entire clip or a specific range of the clip. with the way i clip scenes, i have quite literally NEVER used "from beginning to end." instead, i use the toggles on either side of the progress bar (circled in red) to select a specific range. you don't have to be overly precise with this as you can always delete extra frames, so i'll navigate using those little arrows until i roughly have the shot i want to turn into one gif and click okay. i would not recommend checking "limit to every x frames" because while this can help with file size, it will make your gif appear choppy. make sure "make frame animation" is checked.

this is what photoshop looks like after clicking OK:

across the bottom are the frames. make sure that "forever" is selected at the bottom left rather than once or three times. this makes sure that wherever you post your gif, it will play continuously. the 0.04 below each frame is the frame rate -- at this setting, each frame plays for four tenths of a second. this might vary depending on your source material, but i HIGHLY recommend using 0.05-0.06. we're not going to worry about that yet, though, so don't bother changing it right now.

over on the right under "layers" are, you guessed it, each frame's corresponding layer. now, i could go more in-depth on this, but i don't gif using frame animation. i used to a very long time ago (over ten years ago), but i use a series of actions to convert to timeline animation. before doing that, however, i execute a couple more steps first.

step 3 (optional). i may be a slob irl, but i'm extremely organized and neat on my computers, so the first thing i do is use an action i created to select all the layers and put them into a group. to manually do this, you can either click on the first (or last) layer and then click on the last (or first) while holding down shift OR you can go to select -> all layers OR you can use the keyboard shortcut alt+ctrl+a. i just turned this process into an action to save time.

step 4 (optional). delete any excess frames. because i don't bother with being extremely precise with photoshop's media player, i usually have to trim off extra frames at the beginning and/or end of my gif. to delete frames, select the first frame and either hold down control and click each one or hold down shift and click the last one to select everything in between. once the frames you want to delete are selected, click the little trashcan below the frames (near the left side just before the horizontal scrollbar).

note: to watch your gif at any time, simply press the spacebar. press it again to pause.

step 5. while everyone's process is different, i prefer to crop my gif to its final proportions here. there's nothing wrong with doing it later, but sharpening and coloring can take longer at larger dimensions. the width of a single gif in a row on tumblr needs to be 540px. two gifs in a row are both 268px wide. three gifs in a row are 177px, thus making tumblr's gutters (the small transparent spaces separating gifs) 4px.

step 6. this is when i sharpen my gif and convert it to timeline animation. when it comes to sharpening, i think everyone probably does it a little differently. here's how i sharpen my gifs (which i turned into an action to save time) and here's the sharpening tutorials tag on my resource blog. as with most things gifmaking-related, i recommend trial and error. try different things until you find what you like! once again, to save time, i turned that sharpening tutorial (and its base sharpening) and the timeline conversion into a single action.

to convert your gif from frame animation to timeline, you need to select all your layers and all your frames and select "convert to video timeline" from the menu after clicking these three lines:

this is what i have once i've run my action to sharpen and convert:

you can adjust how zoomed in your timeline is with the slider at the bottom and if you're having issues with playback (though especially with larger/longer gifs, it always takes a while to load before playing smoothly) click the gear icon near the top of this screenshot and make sure it's set to 100% and to loop playback.

(group 2 is my vivid sharpening per the tutorial i linked, so if you don't use that, yours won't look exactly like this.)

step 7. time for my favorite part: coloring! now, i'd recommend taking a look at coloring tutorials as every show and every movie is going to be different. even separate scenes in the same episode can have totally different lighting. i have a bad good habit of saving just about every psd (photoshop file that contains all coloring adjustment layers), so there are times where i can just reuse a coloring i've already made rather than having to color each gifset from scratch, but you might be surprised just how much i DO color from scratch.

in several of my other gif tutorials, i explain and go step-by-step through my entire coloring process and why i use the adjustment layers i use, but as i said, what works for one scene may not work for another, so the best thing i can recommend is to familiarize yourself with commonly-utilized adjustment layers. play around with them, see what each one does, and over time, you'll be able to recognize which ones to use and when to use them. the adjustment layers i use are brightness/contrast, curves, selective color, channel mixer, gradient map, vibrance, hue/saturation, photo filter, levels, and exposure. the bolded ones are the ones i use on almost every single coloring.

on the navigation page on my resource blog, you can find a lot of tutorials that are specific to one or more types of adjustment layers and i encourage you to check those out as well as explore the navigation page itself.

here's an overview of my coloring for the pitt:

(top to bottom, left to right) no coloring, brightness/contrast, adding curves, adding selective color 1 (black, neutrals, and white), adding selective color 2 (blue and cyan), adding gradient map (b&w set to 25%), fully colored, without vivid sharpening, and a comparison of the original to the full-coloring.

step 8. it's time to save! i HIGHLY recommend using this save action from @anyataylorjoy as it's a total lifesaver. if you save your gif right from here, photoshop will automatically set your frame rate to 0.07. while i used to gif at 0.07, i cannot believe how slow and choppy that looks now. all of my gifs are now 0.05, which is what this action does in part. without this action, you'd have to save your gif here and then open that file, change your frame rate, and re-save.

once this action has finished running, you go to file -> export -> save for web (legacy). here are my save settings, which do make a difference:

just remember, to be uploaded to tumblr, a single gif must be below 10mb in size. # of frames, #of colors, and dimensions all play a big part in the size of your gif. here's the finished gif at 540px:

to sum up, what's most important when trying to make high-quality gifs is the quality of your footage. generally, the larger the file size the better, but you do not have to use 4k instead of 1080p. and a 3gb 1080p file will likely look higher quality than a 300mb 1080p file. sharpening and coloring go into it, yes, but they're probably not going to make or break your gif.

sharpening pack: im sharing the main 5 actions i use! feel free to use them, just please don't reshare them as your own creation <3

some of these examples alter the action. i always make the action stronger than what necessarily looks nice so i can edit based on file. i have noted the edited versions with a * and explained the changes!

every action was made by me. all of the afters are colored and have been run through vapoursynth to be resized and sharpened using finesharp 1.5.

no. 1 - main sharpening, used on most things. most common change is noise or reduction of the 500 px filter's radius. ex. unaltered.

no. 2 - inspired by the tv actions used by gifmakers of shows. still made by myself, heavy noise in the action. again, noise and 500 px radius are the most common adjustments. ex. unaltered.

no. 3* - strong noise and filter, uses camera raw. i use it least often. used when i really want to add texture to skin. altered by removing the 500 px smart sharpen and changing the grain, clarity, and texture within camera raw to what suits the video best. this action is the least universal and usually takes a lot of finnicky adjustments.

no. 4* - used when i giffed movies but retained and used occasionally now. very strong detail sharpening that must be adjusted on all files. both 500 px have been reduced to a radius of .02. occasionally, the 10px 25r should be reduced to radius of 8-10.

no. 5 - used mainly on youtube videos and series. ex. unaltered.

coloring majorly affects the look of my gifs and makes my sharpening look nicer. if none of these give the look i want for that gif or set, i will sharpen from scratch.

im begggginggg you to tell us how you colored those scenes of pearline/jayme lawson in sinners! the whole juke joint portion is SOOO yellow and ugly, i just dont know how to color it!

hello!!!! omg this is the first time i've been asked to do a tutorial or similar <3 first of all, thank you so much!! i hated the coloring at first but i've seen some pretty positive comments in that gifset that made me so happy!!!

now, i have to say that 95% of the times i gif something, i delete the gifs as soon as i post them here, so i don't have the psd, the gif nor the actual movie, but i'm going to try to explain how i fixed the yellow tint in hopes of helping you!!!! (i'm nervous)

so, first of all, i tried to use my iwtv psd in the gifset since that one was made to fix red/yellow tints but in this case it didn't work very well. so here's some tools that helped me get better results:

1- hue and saturation

go to hue and saturation properties and open the red colors tab. here, you want to toggle with both the saturation AND lightness. do the same thing for the yellow colors if yellow are the most prominent color in the scene.

2- the curves layers

here's a trick i only started to use some months ago. if in the scene you're trying to gif, there's an element (an object, or the background or whatever) that should be white, go to the curves layer and select the third option from the column in the left. that tool helps you define the whites for the whole gif. select the abovementioned object that should be white and done! it should be completely white now.

if you do this, the brightness will be multipled radically, so just go to the adjustments and toggle with the opacity and etc.

3- selective color

okay. this one i've started using some weeks ago and it works wonders. depending on the color that's bothering you the most, go into the different tabs and try to toggle the options to reduce the annoying tints. tip: you can try to fix also the neutral colors.

for reference, i've used these features to transform this (1) into this (2)

i know showing y'all the sinners scene would be more useful but they're sadly gone :(( still, i hope this might do the trick and be able to help you!!!! (also, it's 11:30pm and i haven't proofread any of that so sorry for any typos)

Hi! I got asked if I have an icon tutorial so I thought I'd do my best to go through my (probably way too long) process :) I'm going to show how I made that icon up there 👆

When I first started making icons I used this great tutorial by @/strwrs and then slowly added my own preferences to make this chaotic process 💕

First for getting screencaps of things i normally just google "[name of show/movie] screencaps" but one of the ones I use a lot is this site.

1. Open the pic in photoshop and crop it

Here's the full image:

I like to make the size of my icons 250x250 but it can be more of a preference thing, a lot of people use 200x200 or I've seen 100x100 too.

I also like to crop a little above the image sometimes to give more space above the head

2. Removing the background

Removing the background is way easier on animation than on real people sometimes so I can show 2 examples even though I do it the same way...

First I go to select > select and mask:

Then I use the quick selection tool to select as much of the head as i can and the brush tool to remove/re-add parts that got missed so it should look like this:

(is the quick selection tool great? not all the time but when it works well it's great 🤡)

For something like this where her hair has a lot of texture in it and it's difficult to get a good outline, I'll zoom in really far and use the brush tool to get as many of the big pieces as I can so it looks a little more natural when the background color is added

Sometimes there can be a white/black line around the icon that got missed from erasing the background and you can use the brush tool to erase that as well.

3. resizing and sharpening

Now everything should look like this:

I'm going to go to the right where my layers are at and create a new group by clicking on the folder at the bottom

Then I drag the layer mask up to link it to the group instead of just the image and drag the image into the folder:

Next I like to sharpen before I resize the image so I open the group and highlight the image layer and then go filter > convert for smart filters and then for sharpening: filter > sharpen > smart sharpen with these settings:

Now with the image layer still highlighted i go to image > image size and set it to 250x250

4. the fun part ✨

Now we can add the background color and everything else ✌️

I have a lot of previous templates saved to save me time so what I normally do is open a psd template I have then highlight the group layer i just made then right click > duplicate group and have the destination be the psd and then I can just change the colors of gradients i've already made (For this tutorial though I'll show you how I make the gradients/paint layers)

For coloring this is pretty much what my process usually looks like (im probably going way overboard with it but oh well lol) it really depends on the pic being used, some don't need to be colored as much.

I have found that over brightening/upping the vibrance isn't necessarily a bad thing sometimes (not all the time though) because of how small the icons are it kind of helps the image stand out more when they're used but it's up to you!

(I also put all the adjustment layers into one group because it gets a little chaotic if I don't)

Next we're going to make a gradient ✨ first i go to the adjustment fill button (?) and pick gradient

Then I just pick one of the generic photoshop options that kind of has the look I want ( it doesn't matter too much since it will be edited so it can be any color)

Now to change the color of the gradient click on the color part in the gradient section and you'll see this

I deleted the bottom middle square because I didn't want it, but to change the colors double click on the bottom left or right squares and a color wheel will pop up.

When I pick the lighter color i normally just go up to a lighter section above the darker color

This is the change i made, you can move the middle diamond slider to have the darker or lighter color be more prominent

Next is playing with the angle/scale until it's how you want it, these are what mine ended up being

I also normally adjust the angle so that the lightest part of the gradient is in the top corner where the light source is coming from in the icon pic to make it look more natural

Next I add a solid color layer over the coloring layers with a color that's similar to the background gradient color im using and switch to the brush tool with black paint and with the layer mask selected on the solid color layer paint over everything i don't want colored with black

Then I do a second solid color layer set to a lightish brown, normally on just the hair, to add a bit more contrast

then i set the color fill layer that matches the background to either overlay, soft light, or color (depending on which one looks best for the image) and adjust the opacity/fill to where I want it.

I always set the brown layer to soft light with the opacity at around 80%

And NOW just when you think I might be done...I'm not...because I have to make this process as long as possible 😂

Now I do another color fill layer but this time over the entire image group layer. I normally make the color a slightly lighter color than the darkest part of the background color, set it to soft light, lower the opacity/fill to about 50% or lower, (depending on how much it changes the pic) and then right click > create clipping mask so it only effects the image and not the background

This kind of just tints the image a little with the color to bring it together a little more

Now the icon looks like this:

You can add more fun stuff like doodles/background textures i've used these and these but there's a lot of resource blogs like @/completeresources and @/allresources that have long lists of different textures

If i wanted to add a texture though i would put it over the gradient layer and set it to overlay or soft light

And to add a doodle you just put it at the very top of everything and resize it/turn it using the move tool :)

Then you're done! you can go file > export > quick export as png and thats it 👏

Sorry this took a little long to do. Thank you so much! This amazing template is by Sole (@the-borgias). You can find the psd in her post!

The psd is in frames but I work in timeline so I converted it to timeline first. The template is labeled really well for the gif placements. Here's what Sole's psd is labeled as. I followed this placement for each of the gifs.

I need five gifs in total. For sets like this, I like to pick my scenes, resize, and go ahead and put them all in one psd to color there. I place each gif in their respected group. It's just easier for me to get the placements right and decide how each would be colored. For the background, I knew I wanted black and white. Then for the other four, I knew I wanted two gradient maps and then two just the background colored. I base which one is which on movements.

Without the coloring, you can see Alexis and David move the most so I add some curves, brightness and contrast, then a gradient map.

Now, here comes the fun part. Let's start with Moira because she's moving less than Johnny. For Moira, I add the same gradient map as David and Alexis but this time, I take a black brush and paint over the parts I don't want colored.

There's yellow on her hand but it didn't bother me so I just left it. Now, Johnny we are going to do in a similar way but he's moving a lot more than Moira so here's when I walk through the gif and clip it if necessary. Let me show you.

Here's what it looks like before. As you can see, it starts to cover Johnny's face and I don't want that.

So we are going to go down to timeline here and click on the group. Johnny is in 3rd gif group. Click that little arrow and expand it.

When it expands, you'll see each layer. Mine is already cut but we will get to that.

So now the fun really begins and we are going to use these handy buttons and walk through the gif and when the color starts moving on Johnny's face, we are going to cut the gradient map using the scissors. This is a really tedious process. You can also use key frames but sometimes there is still too much movement.

Let me show you want I mean. Like I said, I already have mine cut so I know where I want to cut it but you really have to rely on your eyes.

You are going to repeat this until the end of the gif. It is really tedious and takes a ton of practice. I wish I could've done a longer gif of the process but my photoshop hates me today.

Hi anon! Here's a quick tutorial on how to do this:

[1] Select the Ellipse tool

Before making the circle, make sure to select Path, not Shape or Pixels.

TIP: To create a perfect circle, hold down shift while creating the shape.

This is what it looks like:

[2] Select the Text tool (shortcut key: T) and hover your cursor over the circle outline, click once the text cursor has a squiggly line like this:

[3] Add your text!

[3B] Click and drag the text inwards like this:
