I always notice. I even notice when you style your hair just a tad bit differently. If I wasn’t your wife, you’d think I was a stalker. You always look your best. This wife thinks her husband is jaw-droppingly handsome. –Like, sometimes I just want to squeeze you and make sure you’re real. Is that weird? 

The bathroom. The storage closet. The shower. The bath tub. The sauna. The tennis courts. The bathroom of that pub we sometimes go to.

The feeling is mutual. I notice everything about you. So we’d be a perfect pair of stalkers. A match made in heaven. --And I think my wife is the most beautiful girl in the world. --It’s a little weird... Kidding. It’s not. I sometimes watch you sleep and wanna pinch you to make sure I haven’t been sleeping the whole time and wake up by myself in bed. 

We have quite a list. Good thing we have all the time in the world.

I’m so glad you’ve noticed. It’s all for you. Have to be looking my absolute best next to my gorgeous wife. I beg to differ. You have an amazing butt. --I know the feeling completely.

“For me!?” Phoebe faked surprise as her heart swelled with love for her husband. The longer they were married, the more she fell for him –partly because it gave her more of an opportunity to get to know him and his quirks, one of which was bringing her flowers every time he came back from being away on business. “You shouldn’t have.” With a light smirk, she threaded her arms around his neck and leaned up to kiss him back. “I missed you more.” She really had. Being apart from Ian was difficult. She often argued that she’s rather be bored with him than entertained without him. Phoebe giggled as pushed her back on the bed, her hold tightening just slightly. “Never,” kiss, “Leave”, kiss, “Me”, kiss, “Again”. 

“For you!” He was pleased to be the reason she was so happy, something he vowed to do everyday for the rest of their lives. Make her happy. And never regret marrying him. “Mmmm, I seriously doubt that, Mrs. Conroy,” he murmured in reply, kicking his shoes off as he climbed onto the bed and top of his tiny wife. “I missed you terribly. I kept wishing you were with me. I absolutely hate sleeping alone.” He sucked on her bottom lip, nibbling gently for a moment before pulling back, peering down at her and sighing softly. “I’ve decided I’m never going to. I’m never leaving this bed again,” he joked, resting his body weight against her, careful not to crush her completely. He wouldn’t ever leave their bed again, if it wasn’t for his duties as a member of the Royal family. “If we ever do leave this bed again.... you’re coming wherever I go.” He smiled and leaned down, nuzzling her neck with the tip of his nose, his hands running up and down her sides before finally resting his hands on her hips. “Agreed?”

They said absence made the heart grow fonder and while Phoebe found that to be true, she also found that absence made the heart feel like it was going to break. It’d been the longest stretch of time since she’d seen her husband’s face in person –after a few days, Facetime hadn’t been cutting it. She’d had the thought to fly out to where he’d been taking his meetings, but hadn’t wanted to disturb him and his princely duties. As soon as she heard his voice ring out in their suite, Phoebe practically dropped the bottle of nail polish she’d been maneuvering back and forth. “Hi!” Her heart instantly lightened as Ian came into view. “I’d run to you, but my toe nails are wet.”

“Hi,” he murmured, stopped at the foot of their bed as he watched her, smiling fondly at the woman he loved. God, he’d missed her. He’d missed everything about her. He was gone much too long. “No worries, you can jump into my arms later.” He pulled the flowers from behind his back and offered them to his wife as he rounded the corner of the bed and stood over her. “For you.” He leaned down, pressing his lips lightly against hers. “I’ve missed you.” He pulled away ever so slightly, looking down at her, his fingertips caressing her jaw. “Mm.” He sighed in contentment, before kissing her again, gently pushing her into the bed and playfully growling as he tossed the bouquet of flowers to the side and brought his other hand to cup the back of her head, his heart full of love for his beautiful wife.

“Honey, I’m home...” Ian called into the suite he shared with his wife, Phoebe. He’d been gone for a couple weeks on business, and he’d missed her so much, and everyday wished she’d come along with him. She probably would’ve been bored out of her mind, though, so it was probably best that she’d stayed home with the rest of the Conroy’s. He held a bouquet of flowers behind his back as he creeped around, on the lookout for his wife. “Mrs. Conroy, are you here?” he called out, one hand loosening up his tie, his smile broadening when he finally laid eyes on her. “There you are.”

Tris: So, following the trend of alerting everyone to news over a mass text...

Tris: I like girls and I’m really tired of people trying to set me up with eligible bachelors. First: I can find my own future partner. Second: Let me think girls are hot and guys are not.

Tris: Okay, vent over.

Tris: No! Just because I can’t walk people act like I’m damaged goods and “there’s still a chance for me” please! The only thing my legs are good for is running away from your dumbass options...

Tris: ...okay the vent is done now. I like girls. And I’m gonna punch someone one of these days.

Ian: So is this payback for not inviting you to my wedding? Because I said sorry about that and I thought we were all past it 😒

Ian: but listen I love you, we all love you, no matter who you are with and I will always support you.

There were occasionally times where Phoebe felt like she didn’t deserve Ian –this was one of those moments. He was so ridiculously sweet. So understand. So equally in love with her, as she was with him. Her husband had the capability to take every overarching fear she had about their marriage and spin it into something beautiful and far more coherent than the jumbled mess in her head. “I love you,” Phoebe declared, placing her other hand over Ian’s. “I just… I want to know everything. –And I forget that we’re new to all of this, that it’s okay to still be learning about one another. Most married couples learn something new about each other every day, but it’s difficult to remember that it’s totally okay because of the media breathing down our necks.”

“And I love you. So much,” Ian softly replied, giving her a gentle smile. “And I want to tell you everything. And I want to know everything about you. And we’ll get there, eventually. We have all the time in the world.” He reached over, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear, his blue eyes warm as he peered down at his wife-- who he wanted to wrap up in his arms and protect from the world outside of the castle, from the terrible people wanting to see them crash and burn. “I think they’re breathing down our necks because we defied everything they expected of us. They expected you to settle down and marry my brother, even if you had no feelings whatsoever for him, and eventually, I was supposed to marry some duchess or a princess from France or Denmark or whatever, and be the boring brother I’ve always been.” He shrugged. “They’ll eventually get bored. Something else will eventually become more important.”

“I didn’t think you were,” Phoebe murmured. In all honesty, it was irrational to believe that Ian had wanted to keep the two women separate. “It’s what we haven’t gotten around to that scares me. It’s the media being right about us that does –I didn’t know you had a fiancee. That’s something that two people, about to get married, generally share with one another.” The brunette could feel her throat constricting. At the heart of her plight, it was the pressure from the tabloids was eating her alive. “I don’t want the gossip pages to be right… That really don’t know one another.”

“So we don’t know everything about each other yet,” Ian started, pushing up from the armchair and going over to sit on the edge of the bed, closer to his wife. “That does not mean they’re right about us. It just means we have a lot more to talk about, a lot more to learn about each other.” He reached over, cautiously, to rest his hand upon hers. “I love you. And I want to know everything about you. Absolutely everything. Because I know the more I find out about you, the more I’m going to fall in love with you. So they can say all they want about us. About how we jumped into things too quickly, that this is doomed to fail. It’ll only fail if we give up on us. And I’m not planning on giving us up, giving you up, ever.”

“I really wish you had,” Phoebe murmured, pushing a few clammy strands of hair from her face. Having rested her brain for a little bit, her thoughts were far less jumbled than they’d been at the polo match and in the car. “It’s not so much you I’m upset with, but rather the circumstances. One of your cousins pointed her out to me and it was embarrassing when I looked at her like she had three heads. I felt ambushed and provoked.” The brunette sighed. “And it’s not necessarily your fault. And I know I should have handled it better.”

“I don’t blame you for feeling that way,” he murmured, his brow furrowing in annoyance with whatever cousin had decided to ambush Phoebe with the news of being in proximity of his ex-fiancee. “I would’ve told you about her, eventually. It’s just not something we ever really got around to. I wasn’t trying to intentionally hide her from you or anything.” He nodded silently, letting his eyes fall down to his hands for a brief moment. “You handled it pretty much the way anyone would’ve handled the situation, I imagine. The only difference is, we have just about the entire world with their eye on us. Ready to ridicule and tear us apart any chance they get. They’re probably coming up with a story now as we speak-- you’ll no doubt read about the love triangle we’re in tomorrow morning.”

Despite having lunch brought to her, Phoebe couldn’t work up an appetite. She was exhausted from both fighting and the effort that came with ignoring Ian. Instead, she changed out of her fancy tea dress and into her favorite pair of worn in leggings and one of her husband’s t-shirts. Phoebe inhaled as she curled into the plush covers –the bed, plus the shirt, smelled like Ian. It made her feel like he was right there next to her, rather than in another room. With that comfort, her anger subsided and Phoebe was able to drift off for a few minutes. 

She clearly hadn’t been in that deep of a sleep –the second she heard the doors close behind Ian, Phoebe stirred, rubbing her bleary eyes as her husband came into view. She watched him with bated breath, appreciating that he’d give her the time she needed, as well as his initiative in an attempt to patch up the damage that had been done before. “Okay,” she murmured, sitting up with her knees drawn into her chest. “We can talk.”

He’d been expecting her to fight him on talking, so he blinked in surprise, but quickly nodded as she sat up, his heart clenching in anguish as he looked her over, seeing the exhaustion and stress on her face-- one he knew better than his own. “Okay,” he replied. It took him a moment before he continued on-- he wanted to gather his thoughts and make sure he was very clear, and there was no misunderstanding on either side. “I was engaged, two years ago. To, as you discovered today, a woman named Victoria. We broke up, two years ago. Today was the first time I saw her since we broke up. I knew she might be at the match, but it didn’t occur to me to bring it up to you. I probably should’ve known better. And for that, I am sorry.”

The car ride home was uncomfortably quiet. Usually, she and Ian made chit chat, discussing the event or laughing at some blunder by a fellow royal. Or their silence was for other, far more passionate reasons. To sit and not make eye contact with him was difficult. More than anything, Phoebe wanted to curl up into his lap and apologize, but, she wasn’t about to renege her argument when Ian didn’t seem to understand why she was upset. As the car parked out front of the castle, Phoebe’s heart squeezed as Ian opened her door and kindly made arrangements for her lunch. Despite being upset with him, she couldn’t negate the fact that Ian had a good heart and she was lucky to be his wife. For a fraction of a second, she caught his glance, muttering a quiet “Thank you,” before slipping out of the car and towards the front entrance.

Instead of replying, Ian silently nodded, gently shutting the car door and following after Phoebe, a few steps behind to give her both the metaphorically and physical space she wanted. So rather than following her up to their suite like he usually would, he slunk off to one of the many studies in the castle to wait for his siblings to come back from the match-- at least they weren’t mad at him anymore these days. Phoebe, though, was a different story-- it wasn’t like they hadn’t had a fight before; in fact, they’d had a fight before they got married-- hours before. All after he abandoned her after sleeping with her for the first time-- so it wasn’t like it was their first fight, but it was their first fight as a married couple. And it scared the hell out of him. He hated fighting with her, as he’d learned that day in Paris, but he at least knew what he’d done then. He’d apologized and groveled and it all turned out all right-- what if this was one of those fights that broke them? He could just imagine what the press would say if they ended up breaking up. He hated the idea of them possibly being right-- that he’d jumped into a marriage with the heiress without knowing her well enough. 

For a while he sat alone, giving Phoebe the space she’d asked for, but it wasn’t long until he headed upstairs to their suite, deciding that if they were going to go down, he’d at least go down with a fight. He entered the room quietly but with purpose, shutting the double doors behind him loudly-- giving her some warning that he’d come up. Crossing into the threshold, he rounded the corner of the hallway leading into their bedroom, and stopped, hands on his hips. “I gave you your space, now we’re going to do what I wanted to do at the match-- talk. So... talk.” He still kept his distance, despite crossing into enemy territory already-- he’d been the target of flying objects before from previous girlfriends, and had learned his lesson about getting too close when a woman was angry; he perched himself at the edge of an armchair, training his blue eyes on his wife. “If you don’t want to talk, we won’t talk. But I’m not going anywhere; I’ll sit here all night while you shoot daggers at me.”

With the few spares she was able to fit in her clutch, Phoebe fixed her face in an attempt to erase any signs of upset or anger –concealer under the eyes, a fresh coat of lip gloss. Once she was finished, she took a moment to stare dejectedly in the mirror. Perhaps it didn’t look like she’d been crying, but the expression in her eyes said it all. There was often nothing she could hide behind them. Phoebe exited the restroom with a sigh, bade goodbye to her in laws with the excuse of a headache, and eventually slipped into the car alongside Ian, angling her body more so towards the car door than him. She’d long since learned that she despised fighting with her husband, but without the proper words to communicate how she was feeling and Ian’s ignorance to the issue at hand, Phoebe wasn’t quite ready to resolve things.

When his wife finally joined him in the car, he glanced over to her, then quickly away, letting out a resigned sigh. He leaned forward to grab a glass and a bottle of scotch, pouring himself a generous amount of the amber liquid-- needing the liquid courage to get through the fight they were currently having; even if neither of them was really saying anything anymore. He gingerly sipped at the drink and nursed the glass against his knee, staring out the window, mirroring Phoebe as she angled herself away from him. 

It was a long drive back to the castle, but it was a relief when they finally arrived; Ian almost jumping out of the car as it was still moving. --But even though he was upset and frustrated with his wife, who was also upset and frustrated, he still went around to her side of the car and opened the door for her, keeping his eyes down and away from hers. “My wife will be taking an afternoon nap-- the match was a bit more exhausting than either of us anticipated; would you please have some tea and lunch sent up to our suite for her.” he murmured to one of the staff members. He nodded in acknowledgment as they heeded his request, giving his wife one last glance.
