Picture from the Photographer Kalynn Youngblood, in her series Staged Portraiture and Documenting daily Black Life.
This is all I need in my life.
When tyrants and despots vie for power over our land, the only choice that remains to us is to become noble and kind. To become gentle with each other. To protect those who cannot protect themselves and to fiercely fight against oppression.
Despair might be reasonable, but that doesn't make it right. Fight on, because it's the noble and the decent and the best thing to do. Fight on, because there is nothing else worth doing, besides being good to each other. Fight on, because miraculous things happen, sometimes, when you look the world in its dead and broken eyes and say, "I will not stop trying to be kind."
Even beyond hope, there is determination and strength to be found. Cynisism will not save you, it will not protect you, it will not keep you from getting hurt. But if you stand up and say, "I will be kind and just and fair, I will care for my friends and fight for what I need," you will, if nothing else, add a spark of something good to the world around you and to your own life.
And sometimes--not always, but sometimes-- that spark will flame up into something you never could have predicted or imagined. Sometimes the people around you only need a little push to start fighting, imagining, building, changing, and growing alongside you. The best antidote to hopelessness is to start trying to fix things, and the second-best is to watch someone else try.
And sometimes, your actions won't meaningfully change anything, won't do anything but give you a little bright spot in your own life, before being snuffed out again. But that's alright. Beautiful things are not less beautiful for being small.
The Long Walk
Vermis
If someone puts their hands on you make sure they never put their hands on anybody else again.
Malcom X, The Autobiography of Malcolm X
Remember: you cannot fix everything. If you try, you will spread yourself too thin and burn yourself out. Pick one or two things to devote yourself to. Someone else will pick the other things, and together we will carry it all.
I feel a sinking weight in my chest.
I'm so scared for myself, for my friends, for my community.
I'm mourning for the future that I thought we were going to have with Harris as president, the life I wanted to build in it.
I know that there are people around me who will support me and who I can support. I am held, and I reach out my hands to hold your worry, your hope, your fear.
I wish it didn't have to be this way.
But this is the world, the community, the time and place that we have, and I will fight with you, with everything I have. I will rest. I will mourn and grieve and fight again. Rinse & repeat. As long as I have two legs to stand on and two fists to swing.
