episode plot lines that should have been written for suits:

1. pearson hardman’s big client is sued in a venue that no one’s ever heard of so harvey and mike have to travel to the boonies. 6 hours round trip for a 30 min hearing. opposing counsel is a local attorney who knows everyone and harvey is out of his depth for the first time since mike’s met him. harvey’s working class roots have a chance to show. louis is jealous that he’s not invited so he tries to get a case in a distant jurisdiction and accidentally commits unauthorized practice of law in iowa. blames norma

2. claustrophobic 2-man play between mike and a court clerk after his filing is rejected and he’s trying to figure out why it was rejected. think “waiting for godot” vis a vis tone

3. mike is behind on his billing and louis threatens to put him on a pip. nuclear war between louis and harvey erupts as a result.

4. louis puts himself in charge of the mandatory associates team building event. every associate is slowly driven to a nervous breakdown with the fear that louis will take them mudding. cut to black before we find out what it is

6. i was going to say that mike and harvey have to go undercover for a case but we do already have several episodes about how that’s a crime. well. something to consider

7. harvey and mike have to get a client to sign a docusign

rewatched the suits pilot with my friend (he’s a first time viewer) and it is a very rich text. the thing that’s missing from like s4-5 and onward is that the singular magical ingredient of the show is mike and harvey have fun together. yes they’re very tortured soulmates later on and everything is so dire and harvey is a hardass boss or whatever. but they are besties from day 1. harvey genuinely likes mike and is amused by him. even the writers forget that later when they go in so hard on the corporate melodrama

i am certainly highlighting this because of my own philosophy on Storytelling, which is that for me it is driven first and foremost by “oh, this would be fun” it can be serious and sad and melancholy and bitter and solemn and tragic and moving, of course it can be those things. BUT those things are at their sharpest when they occupy the same space as “funny.” do not buy into characters’ bullshit, buying into characters’ bullshit is the mind killer
