Okay, I made it through 3 weeks of notifications before my browser’s cache (or whatever) crapped out.

If you reblogged something from me, tagged me in a post, or commented something on one of my posts/reblogs and I never responded, I wasn’t ignoring you, specifically, but rather tumblr notifications in general. For, like, over a month, maybe even two months, I don’t remember. Anyways if you still want a response/want me to see it go ahead and tag/reblog/etc. again, I’m gonna try to check notifications at least once a week going forward.

Instead of doomscrolling lately I have been reading my PDFs and it turns out if you do this you learn a whole bunch of stuff. I’m afraid I must recommend it

long video about the history of the fight for legalizing gay marriage (with a particular emphasis on depictions in (mostly american) media).

still blows my mind how much attitudes changed within my lifetime.

things not to do if you want to run a successful campaign in california:

ignore the Hispanic vote

ignore the Black vote (especially when there's an very charismatic Black politician on the national stage driving turnout)

rebuff the community organizers pointing the previous two things and volunteering to build networks in their communities

make wishy-washy ads that express disgust for the group you're nominally campaigning for

hide your internal polling that shows you're losing so that your existing supporters don't donate or volunteer and you run out of money to air your wishy-washy ads

(they did at least change the last one in the final month and raised almost as much money as their opposition...but too little too late)

A Vital Part of Your Body Will Continue to Live Years After You Die

Each human body contains a complex community of trillions of microorganisms that are important for your health while you're alive.

I'm working on clearing out some old tabs, and ran across this piece from last fall. The short version is that your gut microbiome and other microbes that accompany you in a series of symbiotic relationships throughout your lifetime persist even after you die. While you might assume that these bacteria and other little beings would perish along with you once you're no longer warm and living, it turns out that they shift gears upon your death, being part of the massive effort to return your remains en masse to the nutrient cycle.

There's honestly something rather poetic about that. Here you've spent a lifetime being the center of a holobiont--a sort of miniature, migratory ecosystem. And these many millions of life forms that you have given safe harbor to for thousands upon thousands of their generations are among the funerary vanguard caring for your remains after you're gone. They pour forth from their ancestral lands--the gut, the skin, and other discrete places--and spread out through even the most protected regions of your form.

And then, just as you constructed your body, molecule by molecule, from a lifetime of nutrients you consumed, so do these microbes go through the process of returning everything you borrowed back to the wider cycles of food and growth and life and death. The ancient halls where their ancestors lived in relative stability are now taken apart in the open air, and their descendants will disperse their inheritance into the soil and the water through the perpetual process of decomposition.

I've always wanted a green burial, and I find it comforting that when my remains are laid in the ground, they'll be accompanied by the tiny ecosystems I spent a lifetime tending, and who will return the favor by sending my molecules off in a billion new directions.

This is why fossils of things without exoskeletons are so rare, and why full-body fossils are so much rarer than single bones. If your body is buried in one piece, either on purpose or by something like a landslide, your gut microbiome is likely to disassemble you way before you get a chance to fossilize.

The most common way to find a whole bunch of chordate fossils together is in what used to be the bottom of a lake or backwater -- fossils of creatures that died somewhere else, maybe got eaten or rotted enough to start coming apart, then washed downriver and fetched up in separate pieces, someplace calm enough for them to fossilize.

oh, nice blog you got there! I'm partial to fricatives. Voiceless alveolo-palatal fricative [ɕ] occurs in the word for 'happiness' in my native language, as well as in the name of a feel-good comfort dish in my heritage language. which is almost the same thing anyway.

Voiceless palatal fricative [ç] occurs in the German diminutive suffix -chen and in adjective suffixes -ig and -lich. words like kuschelig ['kʊʃəlɪç] (cuddly) and Erdbeerchen [ˈeːɐ̯t.beːɐ̯çən] (little strawberry) sound extremely cute to my ear and feel tender in my mouth. whoever thinks they sound harsh dni, okay
