I shouldn’t care about this and I tried to pass it off as meaningless celebrity gossip, but the truth is that pop and celebrity culture has massive influence on modern life and for better or worse, it’s important.

I keep seeing posts speculating that Kendall Jenner is gay and she and Harry Styles are “mutual beards.” The story behind this is that he’s in a relationship with Louis Tomlinson and she’s dating Cara Delevingne. Now, I don’t give a fuck if you think Larry is a thing; I’m not going to ‘police your ship.’ I also have no idea how any of these people identify w/r/t sexuality and won’t assume any of their identies. But Cara Delevingne is in a relationship with a woman. Her name is Annie Clark and they are openly queer people in a high profile, public, committed relationship. I saw a (popular) post joking about how ppl want this week to go down: Harry and Kendall appear on the Ellen Show, when Cara and Louis appear from a closet and they all announce their relationships. There’s a related hashtag to promote the story. In this fantasy you’ve literally placed an openly queer women into a closet, an arguably violent move. You’ve erased her actual relationship to use her as a stand-in queer: as evidence of a “queer association.” It’s offensive and has real world implications. There are literally thousands of people engaging with this discourse.

If you’re all about ‘supporting love’ and making a better world that queer people can safe coming out in, start by supporting actual queer relationships and not fetishized, dehumanized ones built on speculation. If you wore a rainbow flag to a One Direction concert but are playing with queer lives for your narrative, please reevaluate what u stand for. What all of shit says to me is that you could not give a fuck about real queer lives, especially female queer realities. Take a step back, friends. Take a step back.
