Sweet Talkin’
This spell comes from the idea of “sweet talking” in order to achieve a goal. It works a lot like a honey jar which I have a post about if you’re interested in the history/how to make them. The sugar and honey act to “sweeten” your speech convincing the candle/spirit to work for you.
For this spell you will need:
1) Honey (or any other liquid sweetener ex. agave, syrup, molasses, etc)
2) Sugar
3) Something to mix with
4) A bowl or cup
5) Candle of your choice
What you’re going to do is mix the honey and sugar until it makes a paste. It should be pretty thick and not too runny. Then, using a candle you have already put your intention into your going to smear some of the honey onto it. Be careful not to overcoat it as this can cause fires/uneven burning. With the rest of the honey you’re going to put it on your tongue (DO NOT SWALLOW YET) and “sweet talk” the candle. Tell it what you want it to do, when it will be done and how. After you have said everything you wanted to say light the candle and swallow the honey mixture.
This spell can be used for money, love, or anything else really. I have had amazing results using this for money and have noticed this spell always works fast when I’m in a hurry.
Additional ingredients can be added of course, for example when using this spell for money I usually use cinnamon (powdered) and bank dirt (I have a post on this!) Happy casting!
Can I practice hoodoo if I'm not black? I've always been interested in it but I don't know if its cultural appropriation
Always consider your ancestry when thinking about rootwork, because it’s a practice involving ancestral spiritualism. So…
If you’re white, don’t you dare.
If you’re not of African descent at all, don’t even think about it.
If you’re Latinx, consider another practice which is rooted in voodoo and African magick. There’s santeria, candomblé, umbanda, and more practices that developed in Central America and South America, opposed to the U.S., where hoodoo was developed.
(Continuing for other followers)…
If you’re a non-American Black person, I suppose it’s okay, but remember that much of hoodoo is ancestral work and I’m not sure how your ancestors would feel about you practicing a non-traditional form of magick. Research the practices developed in your region first. You may find something more suited. If not, I won’t discourage you!
SUPPORT WITCHES OF COLOR
Elizabeth Ruth is the owner of Big Liz Conjure, and Joseph Alexander Robicheaux is the owner of Demetrius Lacroix Psychic Readings. Together they are co-owners of Consolation Candles & Herbs, a spiritual shop soon to open in the Columbus, Ohio area.
Elizabeth and Joseph are experienced practitioners and purveyors of handmade magical wares. Their established online businesses reflect this. Ohio is a unique location because, although there is a large Pagan presence (and stores) in the community, there are no stores that are uniquely devoted to Rootwork (Hoodoo) and African Traditional Religions (ATRs).
“After some consideration, we decided that ‘North Star Candles & Herbs’ is a more appropriate name for our store. Given Ohio’s history in the Underground Railroad, and our mission to help enlighten and free minds, it fits perfectly.”
“We still are seeking your assistance to raise funds to open. Please share this with all of your magical and ATR friends and family! Thank you!”

Moon Phases in Hoodoo
It’s really common to see modern witchcraft correspondences for the moon phases, but rarely or never for hoodoo. Frequently the full moon is associated with “light magic” and the new moon with “dark magic” using the classic racist terminology we’re all too familiar with. We also live in a world where books on working the roots that are actually written by black authors are a somewhat rare find, and Lucky Mojo is one of the first Google hits for almost every hoodoo-related search you might make.
So, Spirit Roots presents… the moon phases for root workers! An Africana guide to the lunar cycle. Remember, you don’t have to cast the “right” spell at the “right” time, it’s just a useful boost to follow the moon’s patterns when it feels right to do so or works for your path. Listen to your ancestors, and trust your intuition on it!

The Hoodoo Masterpost
Given how hard it is to find reliable hoodoo/rootwork/conjure resources on Tumblr, I’m working on this compilation of as many posts, spells, tutorials, and informative posts as I can find! The vast majority of them were written by Africana, Afro-Latinx, or Latinx witches, rootworkers, and priests/priestesses.
All credit goes to the original authors of each post and resource. Please message me if you want something added/removed for any reason!

Am I the only witch who feels like “emoji spells” or any spell performed without any natural instrument is bullshit?
