I had sex. Why didn’t I feel anything?

Someone asked us:

I had sex with my boyfriend for the first time, but I didn’t feel anything particularly good (or bad), just kind of a stretching. I have a pretty tight vagina, and his penis is average sized, so what gives?

A lot of people talk about the “first time” like it’s this enormous event that (for women) will either be super painful or super pleasurable. But the truth is it’s usually somewhere in between.

What you’re describing is a pretty typical first-time experience — but it doesn’t mean that’s what sex will be like for the rest of your life. There are plenty of things you can do to make sex more of an “ohmygod” experience and less “????”

One way to make sex more enjoyable is to take your time with foreplay first. Foreplay/being aroused before you start sex helps your vaginal muscles relax, and also create natural lubrication. But it sounds like the big issue here is that straight-up penis-in-vagina sex isn’t necessarily the most pleasurable thing for everyone, especially for women. A lot of people experience pleasure and orgasm through stimulating the clitoris rather than vaginal penetration. Many people can’t reach orgasm through vaginal intercourse at all.

Sex can be a lot about trial and error — figuring out what works for you and what doesn’t, what you find pleasurable and what you don’t like. Everyone has different preferences, so you may need to take some time to figure out what feels good for you. Masturbation can be key to figuring out what kind of touching and sensations work for you, and it’s a great way to learn how to have an orgasm.

It’s also really important for you and your partner to communicate about this stuff, and for you to tell your partner if what they’re doing isn’t working for you — hopefully they’ll be happy to try something else that might.

You may find that sex becomes more pleasurable over time as you get a better idea of what works for you, and because you’re more comfortable communicating with your partner about what you do and don’t like.

My generation didn’t get this kind of frank, honest, useful information about human sexuality. I don’t know if a lot of us will admit it, but we were PROFOUNDLY ignorant about things like this, because our parents seem to have believed that if we didn’t know anything about human sexuality, we would magically become the first generation in history to have no interest in recreational sex. I am so incredibly grateful to the people, like Nina at Planned Parenthood, who will speak honestly and directly with Millennials and whatever we’re calling the kids who are still in high school.
