The "War of 1812 Scented Candle", complete with miniature White House near the wick, is, I cannot emphasise this enough, AN ACTUAL REAL PRODUCT THAT YOU CAN BUY (even if it's currently sold out).
The candle is funny enough by itself, but the ad copy on the maker's website is gold (and surprisingly astute):
It goes on to add:
We should alsoĀ note that even though the British Army DID burn Washington, it was only after Americans had burned and looted the capital of Canada, as well as a bunch of other Canadian cities. But no one ever makes a candle about that! (Including us.)
THE BEST PART AND MOST š„š„š„ TAKE:
You forgot one thing :
Is there a word for that like, ābright darknessā you get in winter?? When itās been snowing or itās supposed to snow past sunset and the sky isnāt Dark Enough. One of my favorite things

Shirley Jacksonās The Haunting of Hill House was published sixty years ago today. The novel begins with one of the best openings I have ever read:
āNo live organism can continue for long to exist sanely under conditions of absolute reality; even larks and katydids are supposed, by some, to dream. Hill House, not sane, stood by itself against its hills, holding darkness within; it had stood for eighty years and might stand for eighty more. Within, walls continued upright, bricks met neatly, floors were firm, and doors were sensibly shut; silence lay steadily against the wood and stone of Hill House, and whatever walked there, walked alone.ā

i just fucking love people bro just now i passed by a woman in a jumpsuit holding a caulking gun and totally unprompted she called out from across the lawn, "buy an old frat house, they said! it'll be fun, they said! guess what i just found. a single thigh high in the rafters. so much for chastity!" and idk how to explain how absolutely enchanted i am by that one ten-second interaction like people are so vibrant
I see a lot of talk about how neurodivergence evolved and stayed in the gene pool because it was somehow āusefulā to our ancient ancestors. While I donāt necessarily disagree with this theory, I would like to propose an alternative. A theory that we already have physical evidence for. Humans just love each other and care for each other. Donāt you think that a species that cared for itās people while they recovered from broken bones, or nursed their elderly well beyond their āusefulnessā would leave a member out because they didnāt make eye contact, or couldnāt stay focused on a particular task, or whatever other trait you associate with neurodivergence? I really donāt.
Sure, maybe it was useful to have someone around who didnāt mind making arrowheads all day, or who knew absolutely everything about all of the local flora and fauna, or who keyed in on every little distraction. At the end of the day, though, these people werenāt kept around because they were useful, they were cared for because they were loved.
This. This. This.
Mr. Darcy and I, you see, are not the best of friends. Well, Iām very surprised to hear that. Why should you be? I always believe in first impressions, and his good opinion once lost, is lost forever. So you see, it is a hopeless case, is it not, Colonel Fitzwilliam?
Nothing is funnier to me than Mr Darcy telling his best friend not to propose to the girl he loves bc 1. Her family are unsuitable and 2. She doesn't truly like him enough to marry... only to then himself propose to a woman who is 1. From the exact same family and 2. Has done nothing but roast him since they met

i cant stress enough that venom 2 does not have to be good. it simply must contain at least two hours of tom hardy in a hoodie acting like a neurotic little chihuahua
No, Lizzy. It canāt be true. I know how much you dislike him.
