Neurodivergence and literal thinking: "Story untold"
So I'm neurodivergent (adhd) and a few times I've come across ppl saying that a lot of neurodivergents understand things literally, so they have trouble understanding double-meanings or subtle information.
At first I was like, damn okay, must be hard.
But as time went by, I started to realise that I DO take things quite literally and it's impossible for me to understand anything other than what was told to me; that is, unless I've got past experiences to refer to, then I'd know what that person actually means. Like I usually know what my bestie means because I learned it (which is hilarious because she's rly bad at expressing her thoughts lmao, but she was forced to make a lot of progress thru our friendship 😂😂😂).
In the past, I would usually be frustrated when someone would get upset at me for not understanding what they didn't say clearly. But now I know I'm actually WIRED to only understand what I'm told, it feels even MORE frustrating, because people expect me to do the impossible. Hence "story untold" refers to how we're expected to know what we're not told.
I mean- It's like I have to act like a schizo: hear things that nobody actually said but that Im convinced is true, and I'll act upon it. (Not throwing shade at ppl with this condition but it's the perfect comparison for some humour)
Just tonight I got yelled at by mum because she realised my sis was not wearing her jacket.
What was said -> she previously asked me if my sis "had her jacket". So obviously I said yes because my sis had her jacket with her on her lap.
What my mum meant -> whether my sis was wearing her jacket.
I didn't know she was asking whether my sis was wearing the jacket. But I got yelled at anyways.
My mum doesn't get it, she believes that I just "don't think enough". My mood was so ruined after that. One moment I was in awe looking at the starry night sky, and the next I was getting yelled at. This is so ridiculous.
So yeah, damn, it is hard.
This is how many bullets they shot on a fucking kid.
