I really think we should stop saying "kid-friendly" and start saying "ad-friendly". We shouldn't indulge these companies and their excuses anymore. when i was a kid someone at an after-school care program i went to gave me a book called Useless Knowledge that was just full of trivia and i read it front to back multiple times and i was proud of myself for knowing so much about the world because of it but then as i got older i realized it was not a real trivia book by a verifiable source and in fact it was a compendium of posts from a website where anyone could submit a "fact" with very little moderation and on top of that that the book was printed in 2001 3 years before i was born so a lot of the information in it that might have been considered true at printing was now wildly outdated so sometimes ill be thinking about stuff and ill realize im making assumptions based on facts i got from the book and im like Wait is this real truth or is this Useless Knowledge.

Real thing that changed how i write: I started asking "what does this character think is wrong with them" and separately "what is actually wrong with them." Those two things are almost never the same. She thinks she's too much. She's actually terrified of being too little. He thinks he's bad at commitment. He's actually just never met someone he trusted enough. The gap between their diagnosis of themselves and the real thing, that's your character arc right there. you don't have to explain it. just write both.
