Last night I was talking to my dad about a cute little pink cat themed keyboard I might want.
And he was like "oh well maybe your grandpa can get it for you!"
And my brain immediately revised my next sentence like 3 times while it was being processed in my head.
1. "He'd call me the f slur"

the best death note joke format will forever be L asking light a simple question in which logical answer A might increase the likelihood of light being kira and logical answer B similarly might increase the likelihood of light being kira and after a short internal struggle light comes up with answer Y, which no human being has ever thought of as being a normal response in all of living history

Everyone come join me on noterook now ok its like if tumblr was not horrifically racist and transphobic, and also with an actually financially feasible operations method
Ok so. Noterook is a blogging website like tumblr, rather than yet another twitterlike, which is why I'm there and not on any of the fediverse. Noterook has a fun notebook-y theme to it- your blogs are referred to as a "book", reblogging is referred to as "stapling", and instead of liking, you can choose from a handful of different emojis and "sticker" them onto a post (putting the goose emoji on top of a post usually indicates you think it's bad). It also has HTML and CSS support in posts, so you can do a lot of really cool formatting things in posts as well as on your profile.
The biggest thing that sets it apart, though, is how it works under the hood: your book is stored locally in your internet browser, rather than on a big expensive server, and the server purely temporarily caches your posts for up to 30 days. This means server costs are extremely minimal, posts are robust because stapling a post creates a local copy of it in your own computer, and taking backups is exceedingly easy. The only concession is that there isn't any native file/image hosting, so you need to use an external image host (I use imgbb).
So! Things you'll gain by moving to Noterook:
- More posts from me because I post more there at this point (important)
- The ability to post NSFW as long as you tag it appropriately
- Much less draconian moderation - as long as it isn't straight up illegal, and you tag it accordingly, it's fine
- HTML and CSS in posts, for much more fun formatting and even slight interactivity (somebody made minesweeper? Also there's animations being done with CSS somehow??)
- More confidence that the website won't be forced to enshittify in hopes of more money, because the server costs won't be an infinitely expanding money pit for all the hard drives
Things you might miss:
- The horrifically transphobic and racist moderation team. If you like that feature of tumblr, you won't like noterook
- DMs and comments on posts. At the moment you can send asks or add to a post, but nothing else
- Tumblr TV or tumblr communities. I know I've never used these
- The "for you" page. Noterook has absolutely no suggestion algorithm at all.
- Drafts and a post queue. Unfortunately these features don't currently exist, though they would be handy
- Turning off reblogs or fully deleting a post. Because stapling a post creates a local copy, if I delete a post, any staples (reblogs) will still exist. There is no option to disable reblogs.
In conclusion come to noterook it's like if tumblr wasn't doomed to eventual bankruptcy, weird about porn and moderated by racist transphobes.
Ironically it does appear to be throwing a hissy fit and not loading properly right this instant so if my propaganda was successful you might need to wait till later to actually make an account. Anyway I'm catbot-beeps on there and if you follow me you'll get more of my idle ramblings there than here, and my image/art posts earlier.

Since I made this post it has also gained replies and a post queue, plus more emojis you can stick on posts. Honestly at this point the only things missing from noterook is "a larger userbase", "DMs" and "the ability to reblog the same post multiple times". The first of these problems is eminently solvable. I'm just gonna slide this on in here for anyone that is interested in preserving old games. They take it very seriously too, they want an archive of every single game. Like, they have lists of every game ever released for a system, and once that system gets old enough, they add it to their archive and start collecting. Their latest addition was the Xbox 360, they opened that vault up in September 2022, and proudly announced they'd finished their collection of games for it back in April.
Also, while their game archives are almost entirely complete, they've got another project of archiving the manuals that came with those games, and that is... considerably less well filled out. Their collection of Xbox 360 manuals is especially rough, they've only gotten manuals for three games. So if you've got some Xbox 360 games kicking around, and the manual's still with them, please consider scanning them and submitting them to the site!
Game preservation is important, but people rarely consider preserving the manuals as well; I really respect Vimm's Lair for being so thorough in their archival work.
I've been using Vimm's Lair for years, I have yet to see a single bad link or virus on the entire site. It's arguably the safest and most comprehensive archive of video games in existence. Preserved history
obviously objectively it’s terrible but it is pretty funny watching terfs scramble to defend 1. taking upskirt photos of people you disagree with 2. rejecting women from rape crisis lines based on their voices 3. JK Rowling’s offer to pay the legal feels of anti-abortion & pro-conversion therapy organisations. all because this slightly-above-average children’s fantasy author somehow so thoroughly became the face of a hate movement that basically nobody within that hate movement is willing to criticise her even when she objectively acts against their interests. it’s genuinely kind of baffling to watch.
